5. Solve the following linear inequalities, showing your answer on a number line
(a) 3𝑥 − 5 < 13 (d) 4𝑥 + 2(8𝑥 + 5) ≥ 5(7𝑥 − 1) + 9
𝑥+3 3𝑥−2 1
(b) 3(2𝑥 − 5) + 7 ≤ 5𝑥 + 18 (e) 4 + 6 > 3
(c) 2𝑥 − 5(𝑥 + 7) > 7𝑥 + 19
7. Solve the following quadratic equations using either factorization or the quadratic formula
(a) 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 6 = 0 (d) 3𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 4 = 0
(b) 5𝑥 2 − 17𝑥 + 6 = 0 (e) 2𝑥 2 + 𝑥 − 5 = 0
(c) 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 9 = 2𝑥 + 3
8. Solve the following sets of simultaneous equations, using either the substitution or elimination method
4𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 2 4𝑥 − 3𝑦 = 6
a) c)
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 4 𝑦 =5−𝑥
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = −3 5𝑥 − 2𝑦 = −1
b) d)
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 4 2𝑦 = 𝑥 + 5
9. Solve the following scenarios
a) Mr. Smith purchased 10 chickens and 4 ducks for $274. If, however, she had purchased 4 chickens and 3
ducks the total cost would have been $160. Write two equations in c and d to represent the information
given above. Hence solve the equations and determine the cost of a chicken and the cost of a duck.
b) The sum of two numbers is 144. Double the first number minus thrice the second number is equal to 63.
By writing two simultaneous equations, determine the two numbers.
c) An aunt bought 3 bottles of coconut water and 4 bottles of watermelon juice for $13.40. If however she
had bought 4 bottles of coconut water and 3 bottles of watermelon at the same grocery, the cost would have
been $14.95.
(i) Using c to represent the cost in dollars per bottle of coconut water and w to represent the.
cost in dollars per bottle of watermelon juice, write a pair of simultaneous equations to
represent the information given above.
(ii) Hence, determine:
a. the cost per bottle of coconut water
b. the cost per bottle of watermelon juice
10. Write the following in the form (𝑥 + 𝑝)2 + 𝑞, stating the values of p and q.
a) 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 15 d) 𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 − 9
b) 𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 3 e) 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 7
c) 𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 − 9 f) 𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 + 3
11. Write the following in the form 𝑎(𝑥 + ℎ)2 + 𝑘, stating the values of a, h, and k.
a) 2𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 − 10 f) 6𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 7
b) 3𝑥 2 − 18𝑥 + 15 g) −2𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 10
c) 5𝑥 2 − 60𝑥 + 20 h) −3𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 1
d) 3𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 9 i) −7𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 −1
e) 7𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 5 j) −3𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 2
12. By first completing the squares, state the maximum/minimum values of the following functions and the
coordinate of the maximum or minimum point. Sketch the curves showing the maximum/minimum point as
well as the x-intercept.
a) 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 − 10 d) 𝑦 = −3𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 − 12
b) 𝑦 = 7𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 5 e) 𝑦 = −5𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 1
c) 𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 8 f) 𝑦 = −3𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 4
