A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 5

I. OBJECTIVES:
a. Find the area of a circle
b. Apply the formula in order to find the area of a circle ; and
c. Cooperate actively in doing the activities

II. SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Finding the area of a circle
Reference: 21st Century Mathletes Textbook for Grade 5 pp. 302-308
Materials: manila paper, picture, marker, book
III. PROCEDURES

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENT’S ACIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Prayer

Let us all stand for the prayer.

(Everybody stands for the prayer.)
2. Greetings

Good afternoon class!

Good afternoon, teacher!
3. Checking of Attendance

Who is absent today?

There is none teacher.
4. Drill

Think of a number from 1-9 Add two to the

number you are thinking then multiply it by 3

Now tell me the result then I will tell the

number that you were thinking a while ago.

The number that you were thinking is 2

am I correct? 12

Next what is your answer? Yes teacher!

You were thinking the number 6, isn’t it? 24

Are you amazed by your game class?

Yes teacher!

Yes teacher!

Very good!

5. Review
6. Motivation

What do you see in the picture?

Correct! That is farm.

What do you call a person that works on a farm?

Give some examples of plants that a farmer plants in a

farm. A farmer.

Let us read the problem.

Rice, Corn, Peanut etc.
Mang Tonying has a circular plot of land. He plans to
plant tomatoes and eggplants. From the center, it
measures 10m to any border of the plot. What is the
area of the land?

Who is the farmer?

What is he planning to plant in his farm?

The farmer is Mang Tonying.

What kind of farmer is Mang Tonying?

He plants to plant tomatoes and eggplants.

Hardworking.

Correct!

They are persevering. A person is persevering when he

works hand even when though they are facing some
challenges. We should be a person with perseverance
like the farmers.

Now, what is the distance from the center of the plot to

the border? Yes teacher!
What is being asked in the problem?
It measures 10m.

Do you know what is the area of the farm of Mang

Tonying? What is the area of the land.

B. Developmental Activities No teacher.

1. Presentation

Today, we are going to learn about the area of circle.

To find the area of a circle, you will use the formula: A

= π × r2

You only need to multiply the given values to find the

area of a circle.

2. Activity
Now, let us have an activity.
I will divide this class into two groups.

Group 1

A therapy pool in a water spa is in the shape of a 7-

meter wide circle. How much material would it take to
cover it?

A = π × r2

A = π × r2

A= 3.14 x 7m2
Group 2 A= 3.14 x 49m2
A= 153.86m2
A circular clock with a circumference of 75cm is
attached on a wall. How much area of the wall did it
occupy?

A = π × r2

A = π × r2
3. Analysis
A= 3.14 x 8cm2
Let us discuss how to find the area of a circle. A= 3.14 x 64m2
In finding the area of the circle, we need the radius of A= 200.96m2
the circle.

What is the radius in the problem?

In finding the area of a circle, we have to use this

formula: A = π × r2

“A” stand for the area of the circle. π is the pi. Its The radius is 10m
value is 3.14 “r” stands for the radius of the circle.
The exponent “2” means that you have to multiply the
radius to itself.
What is the area of the circle?

A= 3.14 * (10m) 2
Correct! Always remember that the unit of A= 3.14 * 100m2
measurement is also squared in finding the area. A= 314 m2

4. Abstraction The area of the circle is 314 m2

Again, what is the formula in finding the area of a

circle?

What is the value of pi?

Very good!
A = π × r2

5. Application
Pi is equivalent to 3.14
Direction: Find the area of the circles.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Solve for the area of the

circles.

1. A race-track is in the form of a circular

ring. The radius is 20 meters.
Find the area of the race-track.

2. A circular mirror has a radius of 21cm.

What is the area?

3. A circular clock has a radius of 35 cm.

What is the area? 1. 1,256 m2

2. 1,384.74 cm2
4. The radius of a circle is 10 meters.
Find the area.
3. 3,846.5 cm2
5. The radius of a race-track is 1 kilometers.
What is the are?
4. 314m2

V. Assignment 5. 3.14km2

Direction: Find the area of a circle whose radius is

567 meters.
