    Simple Past Tense

    Simple Past tense is used when we’re talking about an action that took place in the past.

    Subject+(V2)+object.

    Examples: I finished my homework yesterday.


    Steven prepared breakfast this morning.
    Layla cleaned the house last Sunday.
    She visited her grandparents 2 weeks ago.
    I stopped eating fast food a few months ago.
    They walked to school together yesterday.
    However, there are some irregular verbs that can’t be used with –ed, so we change those verbs into teir
    past forms.

    Layla left a voice mail for Marc.


    Marc went to his mother’s funeral but because of his anger towards his mother, he went back.

    Wanda drove to westview to find a new place tol ive.

    He wrote a letter to his girlfriend this morning.

    I saw Arthur two days ago.

    2) We use simple past tense when we talk about a series of actions that were completed in the past.

    Examples: I left the school, went to a cafe and ate lunch.

    Marc came to office, finished his work and then met with his girlfriend at a resteurant.

    She cleaned the house, went shopping and bought some vegetables.
    3) We can use Simple Past tense when we are talking about ‘’single duration’’ actions, which are
    actions that starts and ends in the past. A duration is used to express long periods of times such as
    for four years, for twenty minutes, all day and so on.

    Examples:

    I studied English Language Teaching in ODTU for four years.

    I studied for the master’s exam for 6 months.

    She worked very hard at her job all year, so she deserves a vacation.

    You just slept all day, why don’t you come out and help me clean the house?

    I read a book for 45 minutes.

    4) We can use Simple Past Tense to talk about habits in the past. It can give a similar meaning with
    ‘’used to’’, but we generally use a time adverb such as often, rarely, always, sometimes etc. to specify
    the referred habit.

    Examples:

    I went to amusement park when I was a child.

    I rarely attended school organizations in university.

    She often exercised before going to the work, but she can’t do it right now because of the accident.

    He always went to is favorite resteurant after the work, but he can’t go there now because the
    resteurant is closed.

    Negative Sentences

    We use the structure ‘’didn’t’’ and the V1 version of the said verbs when we are specfying a
    negative sentences.

    Example:
    I didn’t go to the school today because I was sick.
    She didn’t finish her homework because she was very tired.
    He didn’t help his parents after the school today.
    Wanda didn’t stop reading the Darkhold and as a result it corrupted her mind.
    Stephen didn’t go to his friend’s wedding.

    Question Form

    We use the did structure before the subject and we use V1 in question form, just like in the
    negative form. V2 is only used in positive sentences.

    Examples:

    Did you finish your homework?

    Did you tell her about your departure from the country?

    Did Marc know about his 3rd personality?

    Did Wanda realize her mistakes?

    Did you keep any of our previous coursebooks in college?

    Did she go to work today?

    Regular Irregular Verbs Ayrımı

    Some verbs, which we call as the regular verbs, can take – ed at the end when they are used in
    simple past tense.

    Help--------- Helped

    Carry-------- Carried

    Fly------------ Flied

    Call------------ Called
    But in some regular verbs, we can’t add –ed because of grammatical situations such as;

    1) If the Word ends with – e, we only add the d.

    Escape-----------escaped

    Live--------------- lived

    Eradicate--------eradicated

    Smile-------------smiled

    2) Bir sesli harf ve hemen ardından sessiz bir harf geliyorsa, sondaki sessiz harfi çoğaltıp –ed
    ekleriz.

    Plan--------planned

    Sin---------sinned

    3) İki sesli harften sonra sessiz bir harfle biten bir kelimenin sonuna –ed gelir.

    Rain-------rained

    4) Son iki harf sessiz olursa –ed gelir.

    Talk----------talked

    Astonish-------astonished

    5) Sessiz bir harften sonra kelime –y sesiyle biterse, y atılır ve –ied eklenir.

    Carry------------carried

    Fly--------------- flied

    Marry----------married

    Ally------------ allied
    6) Sesli bir harften sonra gelen –ied yerine –ed takısı alır.
