DOOR

A door may be defined as a framework of steel, wood,


glass, aluminium or a combination of these materials
secured in an opening left in a wall for the purpose of
providing access to the users of the structures.

FUNCTIONS OF DOOR
The doors serve a variety of purposes, including the
following.

1. To provide access within the building’s rooms.


2. It will also give the room ventilation and lighting.
3. It will support maintaining the rooms’ privacy.
4. Building doors act as a connecting link between the
inside of the structure.

LOCATION OF DOOR
While Planning the location of the doors the following
points should be considered.

1. Doors should be located in opposite walls facing each


other to provide good ventilation and lighting in the
room.
2. While locating doors the privacy and the utility of
the room should be considered and the door should
be located near the corner of the room.
3. The door in the room should be located about 20
centimeters away from the corner.
4. The location and size of the door should meet the
functional requirements of the room.

DOOR SIZE
The standard size for various rooms, the entrance of
schools, hospitals, halls, etc. are fixed by govt of India.
The standard height and width of doors are recommended
in IS code based on use, function, and movability
requirements.

The following table shows the standard door size for


different rooms.

The door frame size is generally wider than the door


opening. The door frame post has a width between 2 to 4
inches.

PARTS OF DOOR
A door consists of two parts

A Frame: The Door frame is defined as a


framework that is installed to support
the door. The door frame includes
various components such as Head,
horn, style, rails, and panels, etc.
A Shutter: Shutters are generally made of timber
framework with panel inserts of glass,
timber, blockboard, plywood or a
combination of such materials.

SILL It is the member that runs horizontally and
is situated at the top of the frame.

HORN The horn is the projection of horizontal


members of the frame at the bottom and top.
The main advantage of the horn is that it
fixes the frame in a wall opening.

STILE Upright vertical member of a shutter.

TOP The topmost horizontal member of the


RAIL shutter.

LOCK Middle horizontal member of the shutter


RAIL where lock and belt are fixed.

BOTTOM The lowermost horizontal member of a


RAIL shutter.

MULLION The vertical member running through the


shutter.

The vertical face of window or door opening


JAMB
which supports the frame.

SASH Lightweight unit of frame which carry the


BAR glass within a door frame.

PANEL The area included within the rails.

market and classified according to their Material,
location, operation of door shutter, method of
construction, and arrangement of the doors.

EXTERNAL DOOR
External Doors are the Front
doors of the building which you
see first when you entered into
the building. These doors are
exposed to aggressive climates
so that it is necessary that they
are waterproof and have
corrosion resistance.

INTERNAL DOOR
There are various types of doors
are available in the market and
classified according to their
Material, location, operation of
door shutter, method of
construction, and arrangement
of the doors.

rotate in the vertical axis.

spindle.

SWINGING

as hinged doors.

Bypass doors are those
that have panels that
do not remain fixed.
Instead, the panels pass

closing.

SURFACE SLIDING
Surface sliding doors, are a
versatile door solution that
slide along a wall-mounted
track, rather than
disappearing into a pocket
or swinging on hinges.

POCKET SLIDING
A pocket sliding door is that, when
completely open, disappears into a
compartment in the adjoining wall.
Pocket doors are generally used for
architectural impact, or when there
is no room for the swing of a hinged
door.

FOLDING
The Folding doors mainly comprise of a number of
panels that can fold or unfold to open or close the door.
Folding Doors are also known as Bi-fold doors.

REVOLVING DOOR
The revolving door consists of four
leaves which are attached to a
centrally placed mullion in a
circular opening. Revolving Doors
are mostly suitable for the places
where there is regular foot traffic of
people entering in and going out of
the building.

ROLLING SHUTTER
The rolling shutter door
acts like a steel curtain and
mainly provides adequate
protection and safety
against fire and buglers.
The Rolling shutter doors
consist of a Frame, drum,
and a shutter of thin steel
plates. These are commonly
used in garage, shops,
showrooms, etc.

OVERHEAD SHUTTER
These are comprised of
panel sections that lift
vertically as the doors are
opened. The panels roll
upwards and curve and
roll under until the door
is fully open. They can be
space-saving because of
their up-and-over design.

LEDGE AND BATTEN DOOR


This is the simplest types of door
which are generally used at the
narrow opening. This Types of Door
consists of vertical boards known as
battens. The width of the battens are
10-20 cm and the thickness of the
battens are 2-4 cm.

widely used in the exterior of
the buildings. The panel doors
are available into various types
such as single panel doors,
double panel doors, and three-
panel doors, etc.

Louvered Doors are one of the
best options when there is privacy
and ventilation both are required.
These types of doors allow air
ventilation into the room even
when the doors are closed. These
doors are suitable for latrines and
Bathrooms.

GLAZED DOOR
Glass Doors are generally
used in five-star hotels and
corporate buildings. One of
the main advantages of
using glass doors is
increased natural sunlight
into the building. Glass
doors have good acoustic
insulation.

doors are rust-resistant and
can withstand any weather
conditions.

WINDOW
A window is a vented barrier provided in a wall opening
to admit light and air into the structure and also to give
outside view. Windows also increases the beauty
appearance of the building.

PARTS OF A WINDOW
A window consists of a window frame and shutter.

JAMB The frame consists of two vertical members.

HEAD Horizontal member connecting the jamb at top.

SILL Another flat member connecting the jamb at


their feet, having an upper surface sloped to
rainwater,

GLAZING The panes or sheets of glass set in sashes of


windows.

SASH Fixed or movable framework of a window in


which panes of glass are set.

GRILL Grill are metal bars or gratings that are


typically installed on the exterior of a window.

RAILS Rails are horizontal member framing a window


sash.

STILES Upright member framing a window sash.

Types of Windows Based on Operations

FIXED WINDOW
In this type of window the glass pane is permanently
attached in the opening. These are provided to transmit
the light into the room. The shutters provided are
generally weather proof. It provides 0% ventilation.

PIVOT WINDOW
n this type of windows, pivots are provided to window
frames. Pivot is a shaft which helps to oscillate the
shutter. The swinging may either horizontal or vertical
based on the position of pivots.

CASEMENT WINDOW
Casement windows have operating sashes that are side
hinged that usually swing outwards. Provides 100%
ventilation. These are of three types:

1. SIDE HUNG
When opened the sash is able to direct
ventilation.

2. TOP HUNG
Also known as Awning windows. Swing outwards
on hinges attached to the top of their frames.

3. BOTTOM HUNG
Also known as Hopper windows. Swing inwards
on hinges attached to the bottom of their frames.

SLIDING WINDOW
They are of two types

1. HORIZONTAL SLIDING
It has two or more sashes along horizontal grove
or track. Provides 50% ventilation.

3. VERTICAL SLIDING
Also known as double hung window. These have
two vertically sliding sashes each in separate
groove or track closing different parts of window.

LOUVERED WINDOW
Louvered windows are similar to louvered doors
which are provided for the ventilation without any
outside vision.

CORNER WINDOW
Corner windows are provided at the corners of
room.By providing this type of windows, light or air
can be entered into room in two different directions.

BAY WINDOW
Bay windows are projected windows form wall which
are provided to increase the area of opening, which
enables more ventilation and light form outside. It
may be triangular or rectangular or polygonal etc.

DORMER WINDOW
Dormer windows are provided for sloped roofs. These
are projected from the sloping surface. They provide
ventilation as well as lighting to the room. They also
enhance aesthetic sense of room.

GABLE WINDOW
Gable windows are provided for sloped roof buildings.
These windows are provided at the gable end of
sloped roof so; they are called as gable windows. They
also improve the appearance of building.

SKY LIGHTS
Skylights or generally provided on the top of sloped
roofs. To admit light into the rooms, sky lights are
provided. It is provided parallel to the sloping surface.
Sky lights can be opened when we required.
