ENGLISH 6
Quarter 1 Week 8
Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate tenses of verbs;
Identify the correct tense of the verb used in the sentences. (EN6G-Ic-3.2)

Learn
When we talk about using the English language, we should make sure that the tenses of
the verbs are used correctly. We use present tense of the verb when we refer to present condition
or general truth. We also use the past tense if we talk of events that had already happened. In
the same manner, future tense is also used if we talk about plans and future events.

1. The class advisers (check) ________________________ the learners’ attendance every day.

2. Mayor Vicente Eusebio (build) _________________ a new four-storey building in our school.

3. Regine (jump) ________________________with joy when she received an award last month.

4. I’m sure she (try) _________________ harder next year to maintain her honor or even excel.

5. The teachers (report) ___________________to school next month.

For sentence 1, what is the subject? What is the given verb?

In what form of the verb is check, singular or plural? Why? When does the action check
happen? So, the word every day is the time marker that the action happens in the present.
Since the subject class advisers is in plural form, therefore, the verb that follows is also in the
plural form. The verb in the plural form does not end with –s or -es. It should be in the base
form of the verb. The sentence that has a time marker, uses the present tense of the verb.

For sentence 2, what is the subject? What is the verb used?

In what form of the verb is build, singular or plural? Why? What does the sentence
express?
Since the subject Mayor Vicente Eusebio is in singular form, therefore, the verb that follows is
also in singular form. The verb in the singular form ends with –s or -es. The sentence expresses
general truth; therefore, the verb is in the present tense.

For sentence 3, what is the subject? What is the verb used? When did the action happen?

Since, the sentence has a time marker that happened in the past time, therefore, the verb
to be used is in past tense regardless of the subject. The past tense of the verb is formed by
adding d or ed to the present form of the verb except to the irregular verbs.

For sentence 4, what is the subject? What is the verb? When will the action happen?

Next year is the time marker or time expression used in the sentence to show futurity.
Future tense is usually shown by using shall or will with the present form of the verb
regardless of the subject form.
For sentence 5, what is the subject? What verb is used? When will the action happen?

Next month is the time marker or time expression used in the sentence to show futurity.
Future tense is usually shown by using shall or will with the present form of the verb
regardless of the subject form.

There are three simple tenses of verbs. These are present tense, past tense and future tense.

Present Tense states an action or condition in the present time. It expresses general truths,
habitual action or a permanent condition. Adverbs of frequency are common time markers in the
present tense. They tell how often an action is repeated. The words below are used as time
markers in simple present tense such as always, seldom, sometimes usually, rarely, never,
often, hardly ever, and occasionally.

Past Tense states an action or condition in the past time. This past tense is usually formed by
adding d, ed or /t/ to the present form of the verb. Common time markers used are yesterday,
ago, and last.

Future tense states an action that is about to happen. This is usually shown by using shall or
will with the present form of the verb. Future time may also be shown by the use of the form of
be with going to or about to. Time expressions used to show futurity are tomorrow, next year,
later, soon, two days after, or in a little while.
