Verb Hunt
Read the paragraph then encircle all the verbs.

Today, my mom and I will bake a cake for my


dad's birthday. We scoop flour into a bowl. We
crack eggs and add them to the bowl. Next,
mom mixes in milk and sugar. I spread butter in
the pan and mom pours in the batter. We place
the pan into the hot oven and wait. Lastly, we
eat it! Happy Birthday Dad!
Verbs are action words. They are very important
in learning a language. They are always present
in sentences and in most expressions. With the
presence of both the subject and the predicate
that contains the verb, a sentence expresses a
complete thought or idea. As a vital feature of
the English language, using appropriate verbs is
necessary in composing clear and coherent
sentences.
Let us read the sentences below. Notice what the
highlighted words express.

Tita Joana works hard to send her children to


college.
She worked as a waitress in a restaurant.
She will work in a foreign country to support her
children’s education.

The highlighted words are known as verbs. They


express actions that take place in different periods,
such as present (works), past (worked) and
future (will work) tenses of verbs.
Tenses of verbs are
necessary to show the
differences as to when an
action occurs or happens.
Write the correct form of the verb listen as indicated
in the parentheses.

A verb is composed of tense and aspect. A
verb tense or the time event is indicated by
past, present and future.
Meanwhile, aspect refers to the state of
action of a verb and indicates the duration
or completion of an event.
Identify the appropriate simple present tense of the
