    CATCH-UP FRIDAYS TEACHING GUIDE

    I. General Overview
    Catch-up Subject: Drop Everything And Read Grade Level: Grade 11
    Time: 7:30 AM – 10:45 AM Date: February 16, 2024
    II. Session Outline
    Session Title:
    Session At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
    Objectives: a) Unlock difficult words found in the reading text;
    b) Read narrative text; and
    c) Present the narrative text through verse choir.
    Materials: Reading texts, rubrics, ppt/avp, meta cards

    III. Teaching Strategies: Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)


    Components Duration Activities and Procedures
    A. Unlocking of Difficulties:

    1. The teacher will divide the class into two groups.


    2. Each group will be assigned with words and its
    definition, respectively.
    3. The students will be given 10 minutes to pair the
    words to its corresponding meaning.
    4. The teacher will assess if the students paired the
    words and their meaning correctly.
    5. The teacher will present and define additional difficult
    words found in the text.

    20 Process questions:
    Pre-reading
    minutes 1. How did you find the activity?
    2. Are the words familiar? What are the words that you
    find most familiar/unfamiliar?
    3. Who can give the definition of the words?
    4. Use the word in a sentence.

    B. Activity: The students will choose five words and each


    word should be used in a sentence.

    C. The teacher will introduce the author’s background.

    D. The teacher will remind the class of the Dos and


    Don’ts in Reading.
    70  The teacher will distribute the copies of the reading

     The students will be encouraged to jot down their
    interpretations or takeaways from the story.

    * The Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA)


    approach makes readers stop, think, and respond
    orally or in written responses as they read a new text.
    It's an engaging way to make reading interactive while
    building students' awareness of their understanding
    while reading.

    *Guide Questions:
    1. What did you understand from this part of the
    story?
    2. What did the characters feel?
    3. What do you think will happen?

    Activity 1: Comprehension Questions:


    1. Who are the characters in the story?
    2. Who among the characters can you most relate? In
    what ways?
    3. What are the themes present in the story?
    4. Is love always enough?
    5. What are your realizations after reading the story?

    Activity 2: Sequencing Narrative Events


    1. The teacher will flash excerpts of the events from
    the story read.
    2. With the same grouping, the students will arrange
    the events in order.
    3. The teacher will process and check the output.

    Activity 3: Verse Choir


    1. As a class, the students will present their
    interpretation of the story through a verse choir.
    2. The class will be given 30 minutes to practice.
    3. Presentation will follow.

    *Rubrics will be given and explain to the students.
