I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
 Differentiates language used in academic texts from various disciplines

II. Subject Matter


Title: Academic Texts
References: Barrot, J. (2016). Communicate Today: English for
Academic and Professional Purposes for Senior High School.
Quezon City, Philippines: C & E Publishing Inc.
Materials: edible reinforcements, chalkboard, laptop, Power Point presentation,
LCD projector

III. Procedure
Introductory Activity
• Prayer
• Checking of attendance
• Presentation of the Lesson Objective

A. Activity
Motivation:
The teacher conducts a game “Unjumble Time!”
Answer: Academic text is a precise, accurate and a formal way to
present words and terms of a body of information about a particular
subject.

Instructions:
1. The teacher divides the class into four (4) groups.
2. The teacher instructs the students to unjumble the given
words on the board, on their respective spaces, to create
a sentence that defines academic text.
3. The teacher allows 2 minutes to the groups in order for
them to analyze and create the sentence. If no one has
arranged the sentence, the teacher then gives a clue and
gives another 2 minutes to answer.
4. The first group to answer the puzzle will be given
reinforcement to the winning group.
B. Analysis
The teacher shows samples of academic texts and non-academic texts
through the LCD projector, and let the students read the sentences out
loud.
 Academic Texts
1. There are 10 persons died in the accident last June 10, 2017
at Brgy. Malantayok, Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.
2. The results of the 2016 National Election has proclaimed
the very first Mindanaoan President from Davao-President
Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
3. The police killings are still under the scrutiny of the public
eye specially the Catholic Church who condemned such
acts.
 Non-Academic Texts
1. The warrior saved the princess and they lived happily ever
after.
2. Cinderella left her shoes in the party and the princes kept
looking for her.

The teacher then asks the students the following questions:


1. What have you noticed about the academic texts being read?
What about the nonacademic texts?
2. What can you say about its structure?

C. Abstraction
The teacher discusses the lesson. The learners acquire knowledge regarding the following
points:
• What is an academic text?
• What is its difference from non-academic text?
• What is the structure of an academic text?
• Where can it be found/read?
• What is the purpose of academic text?

D. Application
 The teacher lets the students to identify the parts of an academic text in
the “Impact of Technology on Politics”.

IV. Evaluation
 The teacher will evaluate the students of what they have learned from the lesson through a
quiz/an assessment.
