Objectives:
1. Observe how the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers is being practiced.
2. Analye the importance of the Code of Ethics to teachers and students.
3. Analye the professional and social accountability of teachers.
Education Theory
The kind of teacher you are and the way that you portray yourself matters a lot to your
employer, the community, and the stakeholders. As role models, teachers are expected to embody
good ethics, which is a fundamental requirement of a profession. Good ethics is based on moral
principles and appropriate conduct that one should observe as a professional.
Pursuant to section 6 of RA 7836, the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers was
promulgated by virtue of PRC Board Resolution No. 435, series of 1997. In accordance with the
preamble of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers, teachers are referred to as duly licensed
professionals who possess dignity and high moral values as well as technical and professional
competence in the practice of their noble profession. They strictly adhere to, observe, and practice
this set of ethical and moral principles, standards, and values (PRC, 1997).
The Code of Ethics covers all public and private school teachers in basic education, technical
– vocational education, as well as non – formal education. It articulates the professional
accountability and responsibility of teachers with the state, the community, the teaching profession,
the higher authorities in the profession, the learners, the parents, the business, and as a person.
Relatively, this set of ethical standards also serves as sufficient ground for the imposition
against the erring teacher of the disciplinary action consisting of revocation of teacher’s license or
suspension from the practice of profession (PRC, 2015). The teacher as a model should religiously
practice the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers to set a good example not only to the students
but most especially in teaching profession and the community they serve.
Article IV: The Teacher and the Profession also highlights the
Skills significance of upgrading teaching skills, encouraging teachers to adopt
new and effective methods, techniques, and strategies for improved
instruction.
Article V: The Teachers and The Profession encourages teachers to
support their colleagues, share their knowledge, and work together to
enhance the quality of the profession collectively, fostering a
collaborative environment that improves teaching skills.
Article XI: The Teacher as a Person acknowledges the importance of
maintaining a professional attitude and demeanour, both within and

outside the school, contributing to the improvement of the teacher's
overall competence.
Article IX: The Teachers and Parents encourages open communication
with parents, recognizing the significance of parental involvement in the
education process, contributing to the development of positive
interpersonal skills and attitudes.
Article VIII: The Teachers and Learners highlights the teacher's
obligation to provide quality education, establish a positive learning
environment, and promote the well-being and rights of learners,
emphasizing the significance of a positive and student-centered attitude.
The Code of Ethics is important to teachers as it provides a set of guiding principles that
establish professional standards, ensuring ethical conduct, accountability, and fostering a
positive and effective learning environment.
2. How does the Code of Ethics influence the personal life of a teacher?
The Code of Ethics influences the personal life of a teacher by emphasizing the need for
maintaining a professional image outside the school, balancing personal and professional
responsibilities, and upholding ethical standards in all aspects of life.
If a teacher needs improvement in maintaining open communication with parents (Article IX) or
fostering a positive learning environment (Article VIII), they can utilize the Code of Ethics as a
guide to improve their practices.
To promote the Code of Ethics to fellow teachers, organizing workshops, sharing relevant
resources, and facilitating discussions that highlight the importance of ethical conduct,
professional development, and positive interactions with students, parents, and the community
can be helpful.
Moreover, an ideal teacher demonstrates strong interpersonal skills. They are approachable.
friendly, and create a positive and inclusive learning environment. An ideal teacher fosters a sense
of trust and mutual respect with their students, which encourages open communication and
collaboration. They are skilled at building relationships and are sensitive to the needs and cultural
backgrounds of their diverse group of students.
An ideal teacher possesses exceptional teaching strategies. They employ diverse methods to
cater to various learning styles and abilities. They utilize innovative techniques and technologies to
enhance the learning experience and make the subject matter more relatable and engaging. An ideal
teacher recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of their students and tailors their instruction
accordingly, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Lastly, an ideal teacher inspires and motivates their students. They create a stimulating
learning environment. environment that encourages curiosity and critical thinking. They foster a love
for learning and provide a safe space for students to take risks and make mistakes. An ideal teacher
recognizes and celebrates the achievements of their students, providing constructive feedback to
enhance their growth and development.
