Module 2
Lesson 1: Meaning of Teacher as a Professional

Activity 1: What does society expects of teachers as professionals? Answer the question by
beginning with any of the letters of the word.

These days, teachers are

Expected to have an
Advanced knowledge and skills
Causing them to promote efficient,
High academic and
Ethical standards to student’s holistic progress,
Realistic enough to ensure meaningful learning experiences.

Activity 2: Let’ Analyze

1. What does your list tell about society’s expectations from teachers?
The list I’ve made above only tells that there are lots of responsibilities associated with the
word “teacher”. It does not only confine to their mission in teaching the young learners, nor
not only limited to the four corners of their room. For one thing, teachers are expected to have
a solid grasp of the content that they teach. Thus, their profession requires long years of initial
professional education and continuing professional development after, because they are
expected to achieve not only a certain level of education but as well as skills and trainings. For
another, teachers are expected to be multidimensional in a sense that they must be an effective
promoter of exemplary practices who hold strong beliefs about the potential for all children.
Furthermore, teachers have a tremendous impact to their students that is why they are regarded
to create a meaningful learning experience to them. Because in one way or another, those
knowledges that have been instilled on their minds would surely have a great factor to make
them become an active and participating citizen for the betterment of society.

2. How do you feel? Are you overwhelmed by the litany of expectations?

I would lie if I would say that I am not overwhelmed with the expectations of the society
to our dear educators, because honestly doing this activity made me realized that the call of
being a teacher is not only about the lessons you teach or about the number of books you read,
but it is all about how you make difference to one’s life. In fact, the countless effort teachers
do day by day just to ensure that diverse learners would only achieve one thing in common
which is success, is indeed an inspiration. At the end of the day, what their students achieved
in life would be counted as their achievements as well, which definitely, would really make
sense of the words “mission accomplished”.

3. Are you changing your “YES” to the call to teach? Share your answers with the group?

There’s more a lot to this that suddenly made me get a second thought about the chosen
profession I am heading to, but I never have I ever think of giving up to this mission. Why? is
it because I believe that when you are genuinely devoted and committed to what you are doing,
and you know exactly what you want, then whatever irrepressible expectations the society
throws at you, the idea of quitting will never cross your mind even for a second. However, it
would make you more eager to push harder amid hardships in order to achieve that goals and
dreams of yours.

Activity 3. Let’s Apply What You Learned

1. Add a 5th column to Table 1 on a Comparison of the 4 models on Teacher Effectiveness.

2. An LPT pin is worn by Licensed Professional Teacher (LPT) and the letters LPT are attached
to the name of every professional teacher in the Philippines in the same way that M.D., Doctor
of Medicine, is attached to the name of a medical doctor, R.N. for Registered Nurse and CPA
for a Certified Public Accountant. When you wear that pin and write LPT after your name, you
are announcing to the world you are a professional teacher. Professional teacher, what does
this mean?

A professional teacher is one who went through long years of preparation to earn a
teacher education degree recognized by the Commission on Higher Education, after which
he/she hurdled a Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) administered by the Board for
Professional Teachers with supervision of the Professional Regulation Committee. Which
means that they have completed college/ university degree thus demonstrate solely ethical
competence in their chosen field that would make them eligible to teach.

3. Below are teachers’ obligations enumerated in Section 16 of Batas Pambansa Blg. 232
known as the Education Act of 1982.
Every teacher shall:
1. Perform his duties to the school by discharging his responsibilities in accordance with
the philosophy, goals and objectives of the school.
2. Be accountable for the efficient and effective attainment of specified learning
objectives in pursuance of national development goals, within the limits of available
school resources.
3. Render regular reports on performance of each student to the latter’s parents or
guardians with specific suggestions for improvement.
4. Assume the responsibility to maintain and sustain his professional growth and
advancement and maintain professionalism in his behavior at all times.
5. Refrain from making deductions in students’ scholastic ratings for acts that are clearly
not manifestations of poor scholarship.
6. Participate as an agent of constructive, social, economic, moral, intellectual, cultural
and political change in his school and the community within the context of national
policies. Are these teachers’ obligations exactly the same as the seven domains of the
PPST? Share your answer.

Based on my opinion, these teachers’ obligations enumerated in Section 16 of Batas

Pambansa Blg. 232 known as the Education Act of 1982 is not exactly the same as the seven
domains of the PPST because as I reviewed, these obligations cater only the domains 4-7 which
are curriculum and planning, assessment and reporting, community linkages and professional
engagement, and personal growth and professional development. In which these domains
revolve only on the specific dimensions of teacher practices and development but least on the
management of learner’s learning environment. Whereas the PPST not only gives focus to the
practice and professional engagement of a teacher but at the same time, it highlights the
establishment of learning environments that are responsive to learner diversity. But all of this
doesn’t mean that PPST is way better than the Education Act of 1982. Only that, this PPST
tends to elaborate more specific the standards describing the expectations for teachers personal
growth as well as the learners. However, it is clear that the teacher’s obligation stated above
meticulously presented the expected standards in education setting as a whole.

LOOKING AHEAD
It is a professional obligation of Filipino teachers to contribute to the formation of “Filipinos
who passionately love their country and whose values and competencies enable them to realize
their full potential and contribute meaningfully to building the nation.” (DepEd vision). It is
also a professional obligation of teachers to help DepEd in its mission, “to protect and promote
the right of every Filipino quality, equitable, culture-based and complete basic education”
where:
• Students learn in a child-friendly, gender sensitive, safe and motivating
environment
• Teachers facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner…
If the future teacher is prepared in accordance with the 4 models of teacher effectiveness and
in accordance with the domains of the PPST, will he/she able to cope with the demands of
DepEd’s vision and mission statements?

If a future teacher is prepared in accordance with the 4 models of teacher effectiveness

and in accordance with the domains of the PPST, of course I must say that he/she would be
able to cope up with the demands of DepEd’s vision and mission statements. How? Let’s
discuss first the DepEd’s vision. Once a future teacher bears in his/her mind the expectation
and standards set by the society he/she belongs, then it would be clear to him/her the obligations
attached as an educator which could be summarized by his/her recognition of the importance
of what teachers should know, be able to do and value to achieve competence, improved student
learning outcomes, and eventually quality education. Which only means that with this
knowledge and awareness they have as teachers towards their chosen profession, then it would
be enough for them to have the audacity in dealing with this DepEd’s vision. On the other hand,
a teacher who already have the grasp of the said vision, it is likely that they look forward and
anticipate about their end goal which is service. Thus, promoting and facilitating an equitable
meaningful learning environment to diverse learners is necessary to the success of high-quality
learning outcomes.

Lesson 2. The Demands of Society from the Teacher as a Person

Activity 1. Let’s Analyze

1. Recall your most memorable teacher who had the greatest impact on your life? What
special personal qualities did he/she possess? Write them down.

As I can still remember way back in high school, when someone asked me about a
teacher who inspires me, I couldn’t answer. Not until I entered the class of this man who
never failed in giving us life lessons. He never hesitates to share his experiences and even
taught us how to deal with the hardships and setbacks we may meet along the way of
achieving our dreams and goals in life. From that day on, I knew that he indeed brings
inspiration to his students. Once he starts to relate the topic of our lesson to his life back
then, when education was still a privilege and not a right. Where poor children wouldn’t
have a chance to afford school because of poverty, there was Sir Buddy, who continuously
achieving his dreams amid all life’s challenges. Until now, you can still see that he is really
down to earth. We could even bump him at school on weekends inflicting his precious
smiles to his students and a pair of slippers with an old muddy pants he used to wear when
he would work on his farm. So, it comes as no surprise to me that he was loved and
respected by his students because he knows how to treat everyone the same.

2. “I cannot hear what you are saying because who you are speaks louder than what you
say”. How do you relate this to your personal life as a teacher?

We are judged by our actions rather than our words. The phrases “I cannot hear what you
are saying because who you are speaks louder than what you say” only implies that actions
speak louder than words. With this in mind, as a future teacher I should live with the philosophy
of “Practice what you preach”. In its broadest sense, as a teacher who has been a great role
model to the students, hence what they called as “model teachers”, then showing them actions
of what you preach is way better than merely providing them with theories of the everyday
lesson.

Activity 2. Let’s Apply What You Learned

1. Read the poem on this link

https://yourcaringprofessionalteacher.wordpress.com/2013/10/18/of-teachers-and-their-love/
then answer the questions after.
2. Which lines of the poem do you like the most? Why?

Love always expects the best of others. This was the line in the poem that really caught
my attention the most. It is true that according to the poem, love is the greatest among faith and
hope because teachers make the world a better place by simply giving love to their work and
to their students. Apparently, teachers weren’t born to “Just teach.” however, they are born to
inspire others to be the best version of their selves. In fact, through the years a teacher’s love
serves as a guide path for every student in every step of the way to success. Consequently, we
should remember that every job has its own ups and downs. But not every job can change a life
and that is why a teacher’s love is worth it because it can change the world.

3. What mental portrait of the teacher in the classroom and the teacher in the community is
painted by the poem, “You are a Teacher?”
In the poem “You are a Teacher”, it gives a clear mental picture of the teacher in the
classroom and the teacher in the community wherein they are expected to take extra efforts for
students to learn positive values from them. An effective teacher will excite, inspire and
motivate students to be active in their learning, investigate new areas of knowledge and make
connections to future learning (Whitton et al 2010). Amid all the curricular goals and objectives
that are needed to attain high standards of education, teachers must focus on promoting and
encouraging the natural ‘built-in’ motivation the students possess, for them to stimulate interest
in the topic, and willingness to participate due to their own personal interest, curiosity or
enjoyment.

4. Read your name through the poem like this: Brenda, You are the Teacher.
If Brenda speaks interestingly, effective and well
But does not understand her students
Brenda is a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Read until “it is not resentful”
How do you feel when you read your name through the lines of the poem? Describe
and explain why.

When I read my name through the lines on the poem, I feel really fascinated by the
message of it because when I put myself in someone else’s shoe which I pertains to a teacher
described by the writer, that is when I truly understand that starting a career as a teacher holds
too much expectation from the school and the community. You should always give your best
shot to not just focus on the effectiveness of the teaching methods and pedagogies in a
classroom environment but what really needs to be considered, are the ways to deal and manage
what the students need.

5. This is how one describes professionalism:

“You have performed at a consistently higher level than others.
That’s the mark of true professional. Professionalism has nothing to do with getting
paid for your services.”
State professionalism in a sentence by stating one concrete act professionalism.
Example: Professionalism is doing my work to the best of my ability even when nobody is
looking.

Answer: Professionalism is being responsible for your actions no matter how you feel.

6. Realizing society’s demands from teachers, do you agree with at least four-year
academic preparation of professional teachers? Do you agree with the components of
that academic preparation- general education, professional education and
specialization?

Yes, I agree with the statements above. Despite the “too much” of the society’s
demands from our dear teachers, we all know that a teacher would always seek for
knowledge to share with their students. That is why after this four-year bachelor’s degree,
most of the teachers decided to take postgraduate degree to indeed broaden and increase
their intellectual interests. That investment on continuous learning is what fills the gap and
needs that might not have been catered by this four-year academic preparation as a
professional teacher. In this way, teachers would surely be able to keep up with the demand
of the society in their profession.
