Chapter I

Background of the Study

Accounting course or subject defined as an information system that measures, processes,

and communicates information, which are primarily financial in nature about an identifiable entity
for the purpose of making economic decisions. It has been referred as the language of business
because it is the communication link between the entity and the users of financial information. It
also known as the art of analyzing financial transactions and economic events, recording them
classifying them into accounting, summarizing them, reporting and interpreting the results (Frias,
2016). In this study the independent variable is ‘Students to Teachers Performance Rate’ which
means students will be the one to rate the performance of teachers and professors in teaching
accounting course and how effective will it be. While, the dependent variable is ‘Accounting
Courses in Schools of Mariveles, Bataan’ will be able to help and give an idea on which school
should they step in to that gives the best teaching style, that the upcoming senior high school
students who will pursue or take the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) Strand will
benefit from it. It will also give benefits to students, teachers, school, community etc.

Polytechnic University of the Philippines is the only school in Mariveles, Bataan that offer
Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA), a lot of students are hoping to be Certified Public
Accountant (CPA) but only few students granted to pass the entrance exam and be qualified as
accounting student. Accountancy is a challenging program but after you graduated with this
degree, opportunity awaits. Students can have any kind of job as long as it is connected to your
degree. This subject/course will test the students’ patience, on how long can she/he take this subject
or course, if the student did understand the discussion, they will say that it is worth to give their
time and effort. This study will help students who plan to take Accountancy in college.

Introduction

Do the students really feel satisfied when it comes to the performance of their teachers?
Student satisfaction pertains to the students’ perception pertaining to the perceived value of the
education they received in school by the help of their teachers. Naaj et al., noted that most students
spend considerable time, money and effort in obtaining a quality education from their school so it
will be worth it for them to study in a certain school because the teachers and educators are able
to give them a better education, knowledge and advance information that will help the students to
easily understand their lessons especially to their major subject. Learning professional subjects in
accounting is not like reading a novel, memorizing, or even like just mastering the accounting
terms. In other words, it is very challenging. The teachers or educators that are assigned to the
major subject of the Academic Strand of Accountancy Business and Management must be able to
discuss and teach properly the students because it is important for the students to study the
accounting subject because it is not just for the sake of passing the course and to enhance their
accounting skills but also, for the accounting students’ future career. Learning and Teaching Style
are both correlated with student’s satisfaction of the performance of the Teachers because it
determines if his/her strategy in studying produces the expected outcome such as higher grades
and effective learning. If the student is not satisfied with his/her efforts, with the way the teachers’
teaches them, he/she might choose a different learning and teaching style in able to derive a better
result in his/her studies. (Keefe,2015) defines learning styles as the composite of characteristics
cognitive, affective, and psychological factors that serve as relatively stable indicators of how a
learner perceives, interacts with, and responds to the learning environment. While (Stewart and
Felliciti, 2015) define learning styles as those “educational conditions under which a student is
most likely to learn”. Thus, learning styles are not really concerned with what learners learn, but
rather how they prefer to learn.

This study is conducted to help improve the learning styles of the accounting students,
teaching style of the accounting professors and facilities of the schools. It will also identify the
primary problems encountered by Accountancy Business and Management students in order to
propose recommendations for better learning of professional subjects. Determining the satisfaction
of accounting students in different institutions of higher learning will not only help the

Accountancy Business and Management students, but it will also benefit the participating
institution’s reputation.

Objectives of the Study

The study aims to determine the satisfaction of accounting students in learning accounting
subject/course from the institutions of higher learning in Mariveles Bataan. To determine if the
school is sufficient to teach the students who aims to study under the Accountancy, Business, and
Management course. To determine the level of satisfaction in terms of learning style of the
accounting students, teaching style of the professors and facilities to identify problems encountered
and to propose a plan of action to improve the learning of professional subjects. To know what are
the strategies that they used in teaching to know how effective they are and patience in teaching
accounting course to their students.

GENERAL PROBLEMS SPECIFIC DETAILS of PROBLEM

Lack of Accounting Instruments - Lack of materials and equipment used in ABM

(e.g. books, laptop, desktop, Strand. In studying, complete materials and
calculator, projector, worksheets) equipment to understand well the lessons or
topic are needed.
Short term patience - Due to the naughtiness of the students,
teachers got easily irritated so instead of
teaching lesson, teachers scold students or will
just walk out of the classroom because the
teacher can’t handle his/her emotions towards
his/her students.
Teacher’s Compensation - There are times that there are some teachers
who don’t give their best to teach and educate
their students because of unsatisfied salary.
Students to Teachers’ Performance Rate in Teaching Accounting Courses in Schools of Mariveles,
Bataan

Teacher’s Deficiency - Some teachers who teach major subjects in

Accountancy, Business, and Management
Strand don’t really have enough knowledge to
fully give students the information and
knowledge needed.

Limited time - Limited time given to the teacher to discuss a

lesson especially in the major subject like
Accounting to the students
Teacher’s Personality - Sometimes students lose their interest to listen
to their teachers because there are teachers
who are boring when they are teaching. They
do not mind if the students are listening or
understand what s/he is saying in front, as long
as s/he keeps on teaching and speaking in front
of the students.

Classroom Distraction - There are hindrances that take the time of

discussion of the lesson. For example, other
students who excuse another students or even
teacher while in the middle of the class, or
when the teacher got pissed so s/he will just
scold the students until the bell tang.

Teacher’s Expectation - Some teachers set their own expectation for an

individual that can significantly affect the
student’s performance. These expectations can
cause teachers to differentiate their behavior
towards individual students, such that teachers
set lower expectations for some students,

provide briefer feedback on student errors and

less positive feedback after correct answers,
and grant students less time to answer
questions.

Students Daily Attendance - Some students are having a difficulty in

understanding and learning their lessons
because they choose to cut classes instead of
listening to the discussion.

Teacher’s Consideration - Some teachers don’t have consideration to

students, Teachers don’t accept excuses from
students. If they said something, it is already
final, even if the students didn’t agree on it.

Statement of the Problem

Academic success depends on a variety of factors and these factors can have both a positive
and/or negative influence on a child’s ability to stay motivated and succeed in school. The
researcher aims to help the students to know which school in Mariveles Bataan can give them the
education that can enhance and improve their knowledge regarding accountancy. This study also
aims to know what are the factors that affect the performance of the students and teachers.

1. What is the profile of respondents in terms of sex?

2. What are the factors affecting the performance and learning style of the students?
3. What are the factors affecting the teaching style and performance of the teachers?
4. Is there any significant difference on the perception of the respondents to the performance
of teachers in terms of sex?

A. Review of Related Literature

Students to Teachers Performance Rate in Accounting Courses in Schools of Mariveles

Bataan is a study that aims to help the Students to choose which school will meet their satisfaction
based on the Ability, Teaching Skills and Performance of the Teachers, in learning their major
Subject as Accountancy, Business, and Management Students. Buchanan noted that student
satisfaction could be associated with a personal feeling of achievement, either quantitative or
qualitative. Learning-wise, satisfaction is therefore correlated with the qualitative and/or
quantitative state of contentment of each and every student towards the resources that are provided
for them by the institutions they reside in. Satisfaction of students differs for every level of
education. Students who are at a higher level i.e. studying in a higher educational system seek
more quality education and perfection of the system at the study place because it satisfies their
esteem and develops them with all the capabilities to be an effective educational personality.
Moreover, Bean and Vesper (2010) investigated gender differences in satisfaction and found that
social/relational factors were important for women, but not for men. Learning major subjects as
an accounting student is definitely a big challenge. Accounting students use different kinds of
strategies in order to excel in their professional subjects. They use learning strategies. Cooperative
learning approach such as self- studying, group studying, tutorial sessions, and other learning
strategies are the ones students are comfortable with. According to Ferriman learning is a
complicated concept as everyone is unique in their own ways and learns in their own way as well.
Therefore, accounting students deal with different learning strategies that will definitely help their
academe especially in their professional subjects but students still need their teachers to guide them
with the help of their teaching skills and performance on how will they help the students to easily
understand the discussion. Gow et al. (1999) “urged that a teacher plays a vital role in shaping the
future of a student. A good teacher is someone who has sound knowledge about the subject and
must also know to make teaching interesting and innovative in the class such that a student should
never feel like missing the class”. Learning skills of the students are not enough to understand the
discussion and the subject if the Teaching style and the performance of the Teachers are not that

good and satisfactory for the students who aims to have a better quality of education. If the teaching
style of the educator is not effective, it will affect the learning process and outcome of the students.

C. Samples and Sampling Techniques Used

In this study, Slogan’s formula was used to know the overall number of respondents in
five school. A stratified random sampling procedure was also used for selecting the participants
in each school. This technique was employed to ensure a fairly equal representation of the
variables for the study. The stratification was based on the students in LMI, SHS, MNHS-
Camaya, SNCSM, Softnet. Within each school, selection of students was by stratified random
sampling.

D. Instrumentation

The researchers designed a questionnaire and an observation as the data collection

instrument for this study. Questions relating to the student’s and teacher’s performance were
asked to the students with the used of Likert Scale. Dry Run Questionnaires are also provided by
the researcher to gather more information from the students. Observing the teaching style of the
Accounting teacher and on how does it affect the students’ learning style and performance
inspires the researchers to come up with this kind of idea to used it as a study. The content of the
instrument was based most on the findings of the surveys conducted with the students of Llamas
Memorial Institute, Sunny Hillside School, Softnet, St. Nicholas Catholic School and MNHS
Camaya Campus, as well on the observation.

E. Procedure

The procedure that the researchers done is making a questionnaire that the students will
answer to gather data and information and we also make a letter to enable us to conduct a
questionnaire on schools in Mariveles, Bataan. The research conduct will be done at the Llamas
