Question 1 (5 pts)

The table below shows the evolution of the mass of dry matter (in g) in maize plants as a
function of time.

Time ( in 0 30 60 90 120 150 180

days)
Mass of 0 10 34 120 115 115 110
leaves and
stem (in g)
Mass of 0 0 0 10 100 120 130
grains (in
g)

a. Draw a graph that shows the variation of the mass of leaves and stem as a function of
time.
b. Analyze the graph.
c. Formulate a hypothesis concerning the decrease in the mass of leaves and stem after 120
days.
d. Explain why the mass of leaves and stem begin to increase before the mass of grains.
e. Compare the composition of the crude and elaborated sap and name the vessels through
which each one circulates.
Question 2 (4 pts)

Table (T) below represents the relation between the transpiration rate and the number of stomata
in the upper and lower epidermis of two different plants.

Transpiration rate (mg.dm-2 .h-1 Number of stomata Plants

)
500 22 Dahlia, Upper epidermis

600 30 Dahlia, Lower epidermis

0 0 Lierre, Upper epidermis

90 80 Lierre, Lower epidermis

e. Table (T)

1.1- Compare the number of stomata between the lower and the upper epidermis of the
Dahlia plants and the number of stomata between the lower and the upper epidermis of Lierre
plants.
1.2- What can you conclude?
2- Draw out a relation between the number of stomata and the transpiration rate in plants.
3- Name the cells that allow the opening and closure of stomata.
4- Explain what would happen to the stomata when a plant is placed in a very dry and hot
environment.
Question 3 (7 pts)

Three lots of 15 radish seeds were weighed and introduced inside three transparent jars. The air
supplied to each lot of radish seeds has different concentration of carbon dioxide. The conditions
of light, temperature and irrigation were the same in the three jars. The experimental set-up is
illustrated in document 1.

Document 1

Twenty days later, every lot of radishes was weighed. The results are shown in the table of
document 2.

Lot of radishes 1 2 3
Dry mass of the 0.2 0.2 0.2
seeds at the beginning
of the experiment (g)
Dry mass of the plants 2.8 0.4 3.4
at the end of the
experiment (g)

Document 2

1. Describe the conditions of the experiment illustrated in document 1.

2. Formulate the hypothesis that is being tested in this experiment.
3. Name the variable factor in this experiment.
4. Compare the dry mass of the plants at the end of experiment in the three apparatuses.
5. Verify, based on the obtained results, if the formulated hypothesis is valid.
The iodine test was performed on two leaves taken from lot 2 and lot 3. The results obtained are
shown in document 3.

Document 3

6. Name the chemical substance tested in document 3.

7. Determine the treatment that should be done on the green leaf before performing the
iodine test and the reason behind it.
8. Explain the results obtained in document 3.

Question 4 (4 pts)

Answer the following questions

1. Compare and contrast between the xylem and phloem

2. Transpiration pull is the process by which water is transported up the xylem. Explain this
process.
3. List 3 different classes of organic substances produced by plants, and indicate their fate.
