Question 1 (5 pts)
The table below shows the evolution of the mass of dry matter (in g) in maize plants as a
function of time.
a. Draw a graph that shows the variation of the mass of leaves and stem as a function of
time.
b. Analyze the graph.
c. Formulate a hypothesis concerning the decrease in the mass of leaves and stem after 120
days.
d. Explain why the mass of leaves and stem begin to increase before the mass of grains.
e. Compare the composition of the crude and elaborated sap and name the vessels through
which each one circulates.
Question 2 (4 pts)
Table (T) below represents the relation between the transpiration rate and the number of stomata
in the upper and lower epidermis of two different plants.
e. Table (T)
1.1- Compare the number of stomata between the lower and the upper epidermis of the
Dahlia plants and the number of stomata between the lower and the upper epidermis of Lierre
plants.
1.2- What can you conclude?
2- Draw out a relation between the number of stomata and the transpiration rate in plants.
3- Name the cells that allow the opening and closure of stomata.
4- Explain what would happen to the stomata when a plant is placed in a very dry and hot
environment.
Question 3 (7 pts)
Three lots of 15 radish seeds were weighed and introduced inside three transparent jars. The air
supplied to each lot of radish seeds has different concentration of carbon dioxide. The conditions
of light, temperature and irrigation were the same in the three jars. The experimental set-up is
illustrated in document 1.
Document 1
Twenty days later, every lot of radishes was weighed. The results are shown in the table of
document 2.
