5E Lesson Plan-Rocks
Topic: Rocks
Learning Competencies:
1. Students will be able to generate and use adjectives to describe the characteristics of rocks
2. Students will be able to predict and investigate what happens when two rocks are rubbed together
Engage
The students will be gathered and presented a bag of rocks. The rocks are of different shapes, color, and
other characteristics. The teacher will ask the questions to access their prior knowledge of rocks. Some
of the questions include: Who can tell me what these objects are?
The students will share their experiences with rocks in the past and their observations of the rocks that
they see in front of them.
Explore
Students will be grouped into pairs and each pair will be given their own bag of rocks. With a partner,
the students will have five to ten minutes to observe the rocks in their bag.
Students will record their observations in their science journals. Using these observations, the pair will
try to list general characteristics of rocks. The students will try to define what a rock is.
Explain
As a class, discuss the observations the students made about the rocks. Using the sample of rocks from
the beginning of class, the students will supply words that can be used to describe rocks. The words will
be recorded on a class chart called "Rock Words". The students will then share their definitions of what
a rock is. After some student definitions are shared, the teacher will formally define a rock and provide
other vocabulary needed for the unit (mineral, sand, silt,, pebble, etc).
A rock is a solid, inorganic substance composed of a mixture of different minerals. (Inorganic means non-
living in this context.) A rock is a mixture of minerals, and a mineral is uniform and made of one
chemical. Rocks are also irregular shapes.
kinds of rock:
sand- the very tiny, loose pieces of rock that cover beaches, deserts
silt - sand, soil, mud, etc., that is carried by flowing water and that sinks to the bottom of a river, pond,
Elaborate
The teacher will introduce a Rock Record Sheet to the class. The rock record sheet has the student use
the "Rock Words" to describe the rock and draw the rock. Each student will choose a rock and fill out a
rock record sheet for it. Then the students will put their rock in a pile. The students will get another
student's rock record sheet and try to identify the rock in the pile. They can only find the rock using the
descriptions and drawings on the sheet. The students will repeat the game two or three times.
Evaluate
The student will discuss how the game went. The teacher will ask the students if some rocks were easier
to find than others and why they think some were more difficult to find. What made finding the rock
easier? What made find the rock more challenging? The teacher will review characteristics of rocks and
the ways geologists use characteristics to compare rocks. Then the students will write a reflection in
their science journals about what they think is the best way to describe rocks and why.
