I. LEARNING COMPETENCY
LO 2. Use and maintain hand tools, measuring instrument and equipment
TLE_ICTIL7/8MT-0c-2

II. Objectives
a. Identify common malfunction (unplanned or unusual events) when
using tools, drawing instruments, equipment, and paraphernalia.
b. check the list of hand tools, drawing instruments, equipment, and
paraphernalia to be requested per job requirement;
c. evaluate the condition of all the requested hand tools, drawing
instruments, equipment, and paraphernalia for proper operation and
safety.
d. follow procedures in preparing an inspection report to the property
custodian.

III. Background Information

Drafting is the act and discipline of composing drawings that visually

communicate how something functions or is constructed. The same with
drawing and sketches, it has several things to be used. Drawing tools are the
draftsman’s best friend. Without drafting tools, it is impossible to finish a work.
That is why, this learning activity sheet was designed for you to learn the proper
care and maintenance of your drawing tools to prolong their service life.
All tools and equipment must be properly maintained so that workers are
not endangered. Regulations require inspections of tools, machines and
equipment before use. We must always be aware that maintenance tasks
themselves are potentially hazardous and can result in injury.

1
THE PROPER CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF
DRAWING TOOLS

PENCIL

a. Never sharpen the pencil over the drawing or close to any of your
equipment.
b. Always keep the lead sharp.
Common problems:
• Leads keep breaking when you do sharpening. Choose a good quality
of a sharpener with a very sharp blade.
• Double lines. Make sure that your pencil is in conical form, sharp and
pointed.

T-SQUARE, TRIANGLES and FRENCH CURVES

a. Do not use the T-square for any rough purposes.

b. Never cut paper along its working edge, since the plastics can easily
be damaged.
Common problems:
Chipped, nicked, and cracked edges surfaces. Wipe off the surface and
edges of triangles and T-squares.

RULER or SCALE

a. Scales should not be pricked with needle points of either the divider or
compass when measurements are taken.
b. Do not use scale as a ruler.
Common problems:
• Faded hatch marks.

TECHNICAL PENS

a. After using, clean the speed ball pen by wiping-off or scraping the ink
on it with clean cloth, which is a little wet or you may use blade for
scrapping.
b. Lettering pens, like technical pens, should be clean at once with clean
water and soap. Wipe it off with clean cloth.
Common problems:
• Lead breaks when drawing. Draw with the right amount of pressure.
• Lead does not come out. Check if it still has lead. Remove clogs or
blockage caused by broken leads.

2
DIVIDERS and COMPASSES

a. Do not put oil on the joints of the legs of the dividers.

b. Do not use the divider as substitute for thumbtacks in fastening the
drawing paper on the drawing board or table top.
Common problems:
• Legs move loosely. Tighten the screw.
• Needle slides do not hold in position when drawing. The needle may be
dull. Sharpen the needle’s point.

DRAWING PAPER

a. It should be stored in rolled form.

b. It should not be crumpled or wet or kept in a moist or cold place.
c. Oslo papers or bond papers must be kept in a large envelope.
Common problems:
• Easily crumpled. Place your drawing paper in a rolling tube.

DRAWING BOARD

a. It should always be in good (drawing) working condition.

b. It must always be clean on or before using.
c. Do not leave any kind of marks on your board to retain its smoothness.
Common problems:
• Wiggling and shaking surface. Tighten the lock nut or screws in the leg
adjustment.
• Lines drawn on paper are bumpy. Clean the table thoroughly.
• Drawing paper and tools get soiled. The table may be dusty. Wipe the
table with a dump cloth followed by a dry rug.

EVALUATING THE CONDITION OF DRAFTING

EQUIPMENT
Drawing tools are draftsman’s best friend. The accuracy and efficiency
of drafter’s work relies on the tools used. That is why it is a good practice to
check if the tools are in good working condition. This eliminates the unexpected
errors in the drawing process.
The following are the usual troubles or defects to identify when checking
the tools and equipment:

3
DRAWING DESCRIPTION TOOLS
TOOLS
CONDITION
1. Cracks This occurs when tools are
dropped, overly blended.
Cracks are signs of
potential fracture and even
more serious damage.
2. Chipped Caused by accidentally or
or nicked deliberately hitting the
edges edges of these tools on
hard surface.

3. Faded Measuring instruments

hatch have hatch marks printed
marks or etched on their surface.
Hatch marks are the most
important feature of any
measuring tool. Without
these lines, the measuring
tools are useless.
4. Blocking Mechanical pencils and
or clogging technical pens have
chambers that hold
graphite lead or ink inside.
These chambers are
sometimes blocked
because of broken lead or
dry ink.
5. Rusting occurs when metal drafting
instruments need cleaning,
exposed to moisture, or
kept in a humid storage.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS CHECKLIST

When having a particular drafting assignment, you need to identify all
the needed drafting instruments. Having a checklist before making a requisition
is always a good practice. It saves you from missing the items that you will
need.

4
Below is a sample checklist

Task: Orthographic Projection Drawing

Tools and materials needed:

Depository: ✓ Drawing paper
For Purchase:
✓ ¼ masking
✓ Pencil
tape
✓ Triangles
✓ 1 technical Pen
✓ Eraser
✓ Ruler
✓ T-square

THE TOOLS AND MATERIALS DEPOSITORY

In a drafting industry, storing and safekeeping of tools and materials in
an organized way must be implemented. Drafting tools are kept in a depository
managed by a custodian. The tools and depository or storage is a facility where
the safekeeping of drafting tools and materials takes place.

Borrowing or Requesting Supplies

When borrowing, requesting, or returning items in the storage, there
must be a standard procedure to follow. Logbooks, forms, and slips are used
to keep track and record the inventory as well as the condition of the drafting
tools that come in and out of the depository.

When requesting or borrowing items from the depository, the standard

procedure is to accomplish a form that specifies the important information such
as the name of requesting individual, description of items requested or
borrowed, as well as the purpose of borrowing. The following are the different
forms, slips, logs, and reports sheets used in the tools and materials depository.
A. Borrower’s Log

This is the record that lists the tools and equipment that have been
issued to and returned by certain individuals in the workplace.

Borrower’s Log
Name of Item/s Date Borrowed Date Returned

B. Borrower’s Slip
The borrower’s slip is a document used when borrowing articles from the
depository. Each field must be accurately accomplished and the purpose
should be clearly stated in the slip.

INSPECTION REPORT
The Inspection Report is used to state the condition of the drafting tools
and equipment that are used or inspected especially if defects or damages are
found. Any defect or damage in the drafting instruments must be reported at
once to the tools and materials custodian. The custodian will then conduct
further checking of the particular tool that was reported. An inspection report
will be used to identify and verify the specific troubles. This may also be used
to report lost drafting equipment.

V. Closure/ Reflection
Maintenance- is the work of keeping your tools or equipment in proper
condition. Preventative Maintenance (PM)- is the systematic care and protection of
tools, equipment and machines in order to keep them in a safe, usable condition,
limit downtime and extend productivity. Corrective Maintenance (CM). - is a type of
maintenance used for equipment after equipment break down or malfunction and
bringing something back to working order.
Having a drafting tools and equipment, it is a must to have an inspection report
regularly to state its working condition. Having a report will let the custodian be aware
if the tools are free from defects and damages before using it in the drawing process.
