1. Water is filled to a height H in a cylindrical tank of large cross section area. A hole of small cross section area ao
is made at depth h below the free surface of water. Derive the expression of efflux velocity. Explain your working.
Find the distance from the foot of the cylinder where the emerging stream of water hits the floor. For
what value of h will this range be maximum? (3+2+1)
2.It is known that in heart patients ,the blood vessels becomes narrower due to deposition of cholesterol. Explain
using Bernoulli's Principle, how can this lead to risk of heart attack? (1)
3.A U-tube initially contains oil of density 4g/cm Another immiscible liquid of density 3 g/cm3 is then poured into
3.
both limbs to heights 6 cm and 10 cm. Find the height difference between the free surfaces of liquids in both
limbs. (3)
4. A liquid shows a capillary rise of 20 cm above the surface of liquid outside the capillary tube. Radius of tube is
4mm and angle of contact for liquid-solid interface is 600. Consider the liquid that has risen in the tube. Show all
forces acting on this liquid portion. Calculate (i)the surface tension of liquid ,if its density is 1g/cm3.(ii)the pressure
in the capillary tube at 5 cm depth from top. (1+2+2)
5. Iron of mass 4000 kg is used to form a hollow cube which has an apparent weight 2400 kg in water. If the
hollow region has a volume 0.6 m3, find the density of iron. (3)
6. The shape of airplane wings is flatter at the bottom and more curved/humped at the top. This can help in
generating lift. How can this be explained using Bernoulli's Principle? (2)
SET-2
1.Derive the expression of Equation of Continuity. Explain your working and mention any reasons ,if required.
If a liquid carrying pipe of uniform cross section is bent at right angles, what is the force exerted at the
bend by the liquid. Assume density of liquid =ρ ,cross-section area ao and speed =v . (3+3)
2.Pressure does not vary linearly with depth in oceans. State a possible reason. (1)

3. A bucket of water has a frustum shape. The bottom area is 20 m . It is filled with water to a height of 4 m. The
volume of water thus filled is 100 m3. Find (i) the pressure & force exerted at the bottom of container by the
liquid. (ii) the force exerted by the walls of the container on the liquid. (1+1+1)
4.A soap bubble has a initial radius of 2 cm. Consider a hemispherical portion of the bubble. Show the forces
acting on this hemispherical part. Calculate the surface tension force acting on this part if surface tension of soap
solution is 3N/m. What will be the change in surface energy if its radius increases to twice the initial value?(1+2+2)
5. A horizontal pipe carries a liquid of density 0.8 g/cm3 , at a rate 30cm3/s . It narrows down from cross-section
area 20 cm2 to 5 cm2 . Calculate the speed of the liquid at the narrower section. Hence calculate the pressure
difference between the regions having these different cross sections. (3)
6. Water will generally try to minimize its surface area. Explain this in terms of surface energy concepts. (2)
