EM-C83

Introduction

The EM-C83 is an auto-dialing loud-speaking telephone designed to help a person

unable to communicate with the service provider either through physical disability or
language difference. A remote programmable digital voice message of up to 16
seconds is played upon answer of the distress call and is used to identify the calling
location to the control centre.

When triggered, the unit will auto-dial up to three pre-programmed telephone

numbers until its call is answered. The phone can self-diagnose to identify and alert
of any telephone line and or power failures to the unit.

If the telephone line or the power supply is diagnosed as faulty, a gentle human
voice will alert the passengers in the elevator car of the fault detected and give
instructions to report the failure to building management immediately. This message
is repeated every 15 minutes.

Troubleshooting

General Points
 Most faults are caused by telephone lines that are not set up to meet customer
requirements.
 Check that voltages are correct before connection. The EM-C83 is designed with
electronic fuses to automatically shut down if excess voltage is connected. However,
extremely high voltages will permanently damage the unit.

Issue Resolution
Telephone Line Fault  Test the Standby Telephone Line Voltage
1. Connect a DC meter across the line terminals.
2. The telephone line voltage of a PABX system should read 24V DC
3. The telephone line voltage of a direct line (PSTN) should read 48V
DC.
4. If the line voltage is between 24V and 38V, ensure that the strap is
fitted across the 24V loop contacts. See wiring and connection
overview, page 2.
 Test the ON Line Voltage
1. Check the speaker box and lead with a multi-meter.
2. The speaker should read 50ohm resistance.

No Dial Tone  Check telephone line voltages.

 Service may have been disconnected from the telephone line
service provider. Connect a standard telephone handset across the
line to test this.
 If the unit dials a number when the button is pressed, the
telephone line is a HOTLINE. Follow the instructions for HOTLINES
on page 5, or contact the telephone line service provider to remove
this feature.

 The unit may be connected to a PABX.

i  The Telstra line ID retrieval service may not be available in your
Button does not appear area. Contact your telephone service provider for information
to work regarding the telephone line.

Noise on the telephone  Noise is usually introduced from the trailing cables.
line  The noise may be caused by having microphone leads too close to
high voltages. Establish a call from the EM-C83 to another person.
Disconnect both microphone wires from the terminal block. If this
removes the noise problem, then reroute the cable.
 Swap the telephone line to another pair of wires
 Earth the shield of the trailer cable.
