EM-C83
Introduction
If the telephone line or the power supply is diagnosed as faulty, a gentle human
voice will alert the passengers in the elevator car of the fault detected and give
instructions to report the failure to building management immediately. This message
is repeated every 15 minutes.

Basic Programming
Before programming
2. On Site: Use the onboard keypad for all programming (recommended for initial
setup).
3. Off Site: Dial in using a touch-tone telephone. If the unit does not auto-answer,
Note1: After each programming sequence you will hear four beeps to indicate that
programming was successful. If you do not hear these beeps, this indicates that the
sequence was entered incorrectly and rejected by the unit.
Note2: The unit allows seven seconds between each key press and the next. If this
time lapses the sequence is reset.
When an alarm is raised, the unit will dial this number 3 times until the call is
answered.
Page 3
EM-C83
To program separate help numbers into all 3 possible locations follow the keypad
commands below in sequence.
When an alarm is raised, the unit will sequentially dial the first, second then third
numbers until the call is answered. If additional optional numbers are programmed,
the alarm buttons can be configured to dial these as well.
Programming rules
When dialling from within a PABX you must program the PABX access code and
pause followed by the telephone number.

Connected to a HOTLINE
A HOTLINE, or Pre-Programmed Self-Dialing Telephone Line, is a telephone line that is
automatically connected to a single predetermined number. This feature is controlled by the
telephone service provider (e.g. Telstra). To change the number that the line connects to,
contact the telephone service provider.
To use the C83 with a HOTLINE, disable dialing from the unit.

Recording can be achieved by using either a remote telephone by dialing into the
emFONE or by using the keypad on board the unit.
Note: The maximum message length is 16 seconds. If your message is shorter than
16 seconds press digit “0” to end the recording process, otherwise the unit will
output 2 beeps when the 16 second message capacity is full.
Wait until you hear 2 beeps before you begin recording message.
To Stop Recording 0
If you do not want a message to play, you can disable this feature. See Digital Voice
Control and Level Adjustments, Page 12.

Reporting Function
The emFONE is set by factory default with the auto report health check feature turned on.
If you are experiencing a large number of calls and wish to disable this feature follow the

Keypad commands
The following commands can be used from the onboard keypad or when you have
established a call to the unit from any Touch Tone telephone.
Talk Time is the maximum length of a call. Pressing any key during a call will reset
this timer to allow more conversation time. Pressing 0 will also stop the digital voice
message if it is playing.
* * Hang Up Unit
# 8 1 Activate Relay 1
See Digital Voice Control and Level Adjustments, page 12. for further details
# 8 2 Activate Relay 2
See Digital Voice Control and Level Adjustments, page 12. for further details
This will return the unit to the standard speaker and microphone volumes, as
programmed. See Digital Voice Control and Level Adjustments, page 12.

Press the i button. By default, this will prompt the unit to dial the information
number (12722123), which will retrieve the telephone number of the line that the unit is
currently connected to. Please note that this feature will not work if the unit is connected to
a PABX system.
Note: This feature will only work if the unit is connected via the Telstra network.

Self-Diagnostic Checks
The EM-C83 performs self-diagnostic checks. If the unit detects a problem, a pre-recorded
message will play through the internal speaker to alert people to the problem.
Battery Check
When there is no power, the unit will monitor the battery voltage . If the voltage reaches 3.8
volts the unit will report the power failure every fifteen minutes.

If the auto-answer has been disabled on the unit, and the onboard keypad is not accessible,
then it is not possible to change any settings on the unit in the normal ways. Security Auto-
Answer Mode enables you to dial in to the unit when auto-answer is disabled.
Note: If you do not call back within 20 seconds the unit will to return to normal mode, and you will
have to start the process again.
Note: After connecting to the unit using Security Auto-Answer Mode you may wish to enable auto-
answer. To do this, see Customise System Features, page 10.

Troubleshooting
General Points
Most faults are caused by telephone lines that are not set up to meet customer
requirements.
Check that voltages are correct before connection. The EM-C83 is designed with
electronic fuses to automatically shut down if excess voltage is connected. However,
extremely high voltages will permanently damage the unit.
Issue Resolution
Telephone Line Fault Test the Standby Telephone Line Voltage
1. Connect a DC meter across the line terminals.
2. The telephone line voltage of a PABX system should read 24V DC
3. The telephone line voltage of a direct line (PSTN) should read 48V
DC.
4. If the line voltage is between 24V and 38V, ensure that the strap is
fitted across the 24V loop contacts. See wiring and connection
overview, page 2.
Test the ON Line Voltage
1. Check the speaker box and lead with a multi-meter.
2. The speaker should read 50ohm resistance.
Noise on the telephone Noise is usually introduced from the trailing cables.
line The noise may be caused by having microphone leads too close to
high voltages. Establish a call from the EM-C83 to another person.
Disconnect both microphone wires from the terminal block. If this
removes the noise problem, then reroute the cable.
Swap the telephone line to another pair of wires
Earth the shield of the trailer cable.
