1. Motivation
Say: “I have here a picture of a garden with lots of butterflies. Butterflies add beauty to
nature. This morning, we will be having a new lesson about figures of speech. Like
butterflies, figures of speech add beauty to the works of writers and poets. Now, I am
going to read you a poem.”
Butterflies
Butterflies are as light as feathers.

They are like paper bags floating in the air.
They are beautiful dancing spirits.
They are small stars in the sky.
Butterflies are so cool.
2. Strategy: Explicit Teaching
C. Analysis Discussion
Teacher presents the sentences.
Sentence 1: Butterflies are as light as feathers.

(Butterflies and feathers are two unlike things with common characteristics which is
“light”. They are being compared using the word “as”. This is a figure of speech called
Simile.)
Sentence 2: They are like paper bags floating in the air.

(Butterflies and paper bags are two unlike things or objects with common characteristics
of “floating in the air”. They are compared using the word “like”. This is a figure of speech
called Simile.)
Sentence 3: They are beautiful dancing spirits.

(Butterflies and spirits have common characteristics which is “dancing” but they are not
directly compared using as and like. This figure of speech is called metaphor.)
Sentence 4: They are small stars in the sky.

(Butterflies and stars have common characteristic which is “small” but they not directly
stated using as and like. This figure of speech is called metaphor.)
D. Generalization
Simile is a stated comparison of two unlike things or objects which have something in
common. It uses the words as and like in comparing.
Metaphor makes a direct comparison of two unlike objects that have something in common.
It does not use the word as and like.
E. Application
1. Group Activity
 Group the pupils into five groups.
 Setting of Behavioural Standards
 Activity Proper (each group will be given activity materials)
 Allotted time for the activity : five minutes
Group 1- Analyze the following sentences. Group them as to simile or metaphor.
1. Noah has a heart of a lion.

2. My hand is a rattling snake.
3. You’re as skinny as a rail.
4. My heart is as big as an
elephant.
5. The moon is like a flower in
heaven.
6. Life is a highway.
Group 2- Given the poem, underline the simile and box the metaphor.

My voice is a goner
My heart is beating as fast as a tiger
My hand is a rattling snake
My face is a tomato
Bye, bye, boring life.
I cannot take it no more

I lay my head upon my knee

Group 3- Choral Reading of sentences. Analyze the sentences, if simile, read it

aloud and if metaphor, read it softly.
1. The kettle sings as it sits on the stove.
2. The grass dances with the wind.
3. The sun is a ball of fire.
4. The clouds are as white as cotton.
5. The moon is like a flower.
Group 4- Analyze the following sentences. If the sentence is simile, sing it in a rap
tune. If the sentence is metaphor, sing it in love song tune.
1. My mind is a puddle in the street reflecting green.
2. The faces in the street crossings shine like a row of eggs on a pantry
shelf.
3. He overwhelmed the boxer with avalanches of punches.
4. The musicians spun great webs of sound.
5. A hundred miles of landscape spread before me like a fan.
Group 5 - Shop simile sentences and metaphor sentences in the grocery store. Put simile
sentences in the pink basket and metaphor sentences in the green basket.
1. The sun is a ball of fire.

2. Her brother was a tower of strength during those hard times.
3. The taxis roll along the avenue like spools of colour threads.
4. The clouds are white as cotton.
5. The dictionary is the bankbook that guides us in use of the words and their meanings.
