1. Motivation
Say: “I have here a picture of a garden with lots of butterflies. Butterflies add beauty to
nature. This morning, we will be having a new lesson about figures of speech. Like
butterflies, figures of speech add beauty to the works of writers and poets. Now, I am
going to read you a poem.”

Simile is a stated comparison of two unlike things or objects which have something in
common. It uses the words as and like in comparing.
Metaphor makes a direct comparison of two unlike objects that have something in common.
It does not use the word as and like.
E. Application
1. Group Activity
Group the pupils into five groups.
Setting of Behavioural Standards
Activity Proper (each group will be given activity materials)
Allotted time for the activity : five minutes
Group 1- Analyze the following sentences. Group them as to simile or metaphor.
1. Noah has a heart of a lion.

2. My hand is a rattling snake.
3. You’re as skinny as a rail.
4. My heart is as big as an
elephant.
5. The moon is like a flower in
heaven.
6. Life is a highway.
Group 2- Given the poem, underline the simile and box the metaphor.
Time Out
Group 4- Analyze the following sentences. If the sentence is simile, sing it in a rap
tune. If the sentence is metaphor, sing it in love song tune.
1. My mind is a puddle in the street reflecting green.
2. The faces in the street crossings shine like a row of eggs on a pantry
shelf.
3. He overwhelmed the boxer with avalanches of punches.
4. The musicians spun great webs of sound.
5. A hundred miles of landscape spread before me like a fan.
Group 5 - Shop simile sentences and metaphor sentences in the grocery store. Put simile
sentences in the pink basket and metaphor sentences in the green basket.
