naked eye. You see how the objects in the sky change day after day year after year season after
seson you start tracking them. We ve been able to build a lot of things around astronomy
Humans are very curious and tool making we have refind the art of tool making to dopt deeper
into or curiosity
Telescopes allow us to look further into space and modern telspocpes allow us to look at
different kinds of light. We look at a type of light called visble light but there are is an entire
electromagnetic spectrum of other kinds of light that we cannot necessarily see but that is very
important to understand the world around us radiowaves, infra lights, visible light
The reason why we can see so well in visible light is because our star the sun peeks in that wave
line, xrays, radio rays.
Le desavantage est que We are stuck on earth in th earth atmosphere. Atmosphere protects us
form a lot of harmful radiations of the space
Astronomers if they wanna look at any other kind of light, we doesn’t have a lot of luck because
e are stuck on the earth. Everythinng that is shorter than the visble wave lengh is blocked out.
If you wanna look at these different types of light where is the best place to put the telescope.
SPACE.
In Canada we are big experts in robotics one of our big contribution in the psace exploration
was the building of robotic arms that allows astronauts to do complexe things in the space.
We started to think about what is going to be the next telescope after Huble. In the mid 90s we
started thinking about what we call THE NEXT GENERATION SPACE TELESCOPE. The james web
telescope.
Its an international collaboration between Nasa, The americain space agency, the europeen
space agency and Canadian space agency. December 25 2021 launched the telescope.
WHAT IS SHE DOING: SHES IS PART OF THE MISSION SHES PART OF THE SCIENCE TEAM AND HER
ROLE IS TO MAKES SURE THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON ABOUT THE
TELESCOPE, WHY IT’S A REALLY COOL PEACE OF TECHNOLOGY AND ALL THE SCIENTIFIC
DISCOVERIES THAT ITS DOING.
Really big telescope size of a tennis court couldn’t fit in its case thing without folding it on itself
and once launch it you need no unfold it. Over 14 days they have to (deploy) the telescope=
complicated series of manouvres.= constantly talking from the earth to the telescope giving it
commands. In total 300 mechanisms that need to work for the telescope to unfoald.
Moving from the earth to its final destination= 1,5 million km from the earth
Difference between this telescope and the Huble= it looks at infrared light. A sunshell was
important to keep on the telescope because it needed to keep the mirror up the telescope
always protected fron the sun. So no matter where its situed= important to have amirror
between sun and mirror.
Mirror important component= 6,5 meter wide made of 18 seprate segments that can all be
moved individually.
If you wanna know where its situated in the sky, find the sun put your back on the sun point
directly into the opposite direction.
In the total= 4 instruments located on the back of the mirror. Three instruments that look into
the Mirr infrared and one that looks to the mid infrared. Different instruments can do different
things all together have 17 moods that they can use to collect diff type of data
Canadas main contribuation to the mission Rdouble instrument size of a dishwasher and on tot
you have what we call a guiding camera Fine guing sensor or FGS= the eye of the telescope that
allows the telescope to find it’s target in the sky. We need to have some way to compensiate for
the mouvment of the telescope and that’s exactly what this does
It looks a very bright start that we call the guide star= basic star that they understand very well.
And we see how the movement of the telescope is bluring that stars light= that’ i
The highest precision guiding camera weve ever developed in the world or in space
Niror niror infrared imager and spectrograph= instrument that takes light and breaks it a part to
get even more detail
