1. The speed of a 120 kw, 1800 rpm, separately excited d.c. motor is controlled by three-phase full
converter. The specifications of the converter are 460 V, 280 A. The input to the converter is a three-
phase, 415 V, 50 Hz a.c. supply. Neglect the system losses and effect of commutation angle, determine:
a) Firing angle of the converter and power factor at rated speed.
b) Firing angle and power factor at 10% rated speed.
c) Active and reactive power drawn from the system at rated speed.
d) Active and reactive power drawn from the system at 10% rated speed.
e) Ratio of reactive power drawn at 10% and rated speed.

2. A separately excited motor is coupled to an overhauling load with a torque of 1000 N-m. Determine the
speed at which the motor can hold the load by regenerative braking the source voltage is 240 V. Neglect the
motor's rotational losses.

3. A 240 V, 800 rpm, 10 A separately excited d.c. motor has an armature resistance 0.5 Ω. Under rated
conditions, the motor is driving a load whose torque is constant and independent of speed. The speeds below
the rated speed are obtained with armature voltage control (with full field), and the speeds above the rated
speed are obtained by field control (with rated armature voltage). Compute:
a) The motor terminal voltage when the speed is 600 rpm.
b) The value of flux as a percentage of rated flux if the motor speed is 1200 rpm. Neglect the motor's
rotational losses.

4. The speed of a separately excited d.c. motor is controlled by a single-phase semi converter. The field current
is also controlled by a semi converter and field current is set to the maximum possible value. The a.c. supply
voltage to the armature and field converter is single-phase, 240 V, 50 Hz. The armature and field parameters
are Ra = 0.30 Ω, ,Rf= 150 Ω, Ka = 1.055 V/A rad/s. The load torque is TL = 100 N-m at a speed of 960 rpm. The
armature and field currents are continuous and ripple-free. Neglect the system losses, determine:
a) The field current 𝐼𝑓
b) The firing angle of the converter in the armature circuit,
c) The input power factor of the armature circuit converter.
d)
5. Consider a 20 𝐻𝑃, 240 𝑉, 1200 𝑟𝑝𝑚 series motor whose combined field and armature resistance is
0.25 Ω. Motor constants are 𝐾𝑎𝑓 = 0.03 𝑁𝑚𝐴2 and 𝐾𝑟𝑒𝑠 = 0.0075 𝑉𝑠𝑟𝑎𝑑 −1. The supply voltage is
240 𝑉. Assuming a continues and ripple free motor current, determine the following:
a) Motor torque
b) Motor current
c) Supply power factor
For the case in which the motor is controlled by a single-phase
i. Semiconverter
ii. Full conveter
6. A d.c. shunt motor has the parameters: Ra = 0.85 Ω, La= 16 mH, torque constant = 2.5 N.m/A and voltage
constant 0.215 V/r/min. It is supplied by a fully controlled, three phase bridge converter from a 240 V/(line), 50
Hz a.c. source. Find expressions for the armature current and hence, determine the values for mean torque, and
speed as appropriate for the following conditions:
a) Motoring with a firing angle of 25.5°, a continuous current and 75 Nm torque.
b) Generating with a firing advance angle of 25.5°, and continuous current and 75 Nm torque.
c) Motoring with a firing angle of 65.5° at a speed of 700 r/min.
d) Generating at a firing advance angle of 65.5° at a speed of 700 r/min.

7. Discuss the FOUR induction motor speed control techniques using appropriate equations to illustrate
hoe speed control is achieved.

8. A 6-pole, 50 Hz slip-ring induction motor is controlled by a static Scherbius drive. Determine the angle
of firing advance in the inverter at
a) 600 rpm
b) 800 rpm
If the open circuit standstill slip-ring voltage is 660 V, and the inverter is connected to a 415 V, three-
phase system. Neglect overlaps and losses.

9. A three-phase, 1500 rpm, induction motor is developing torque of 3000 syn.watts at a input frequency of 50
Hz. If the motor torque is now reduced to 1500 syn. watts, determine new value of stator frequency. The motor
is operating in constant HP region. Assume constant rotor frequency and neglect effect of rotor resistance.

10. A three-phase, 460 V, 60 Hz, six-pole, 1176 rpm, star-connected, squirrel-cage induction motor has the
following parameters per phase referred to the stator.
𝑅1 = 0.19 Ω, 𝑅2 = 0.135Ω, 𝑋1 = 0.25Ω, 𝑋2 = 1.5Ω 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑋𝑚 = 15.5Ω.
The current source inverter controls the motor. At the rated value, flux is maintained constant. Determine
the following.

a) The stator current and d.c. link current when the machine operates at rated torque and 50 Hz.
b) The inverter frequency and d.c. link current for a speed of 500 rpm and rated torque.
c) The motor speed, stator current, and d.c. link current for half for the rated torque and inverter
frequency of 25 Hz.

11. A three-phase, 415V, 50Hz, 6-pole, star-connected cylindrical rotor synchronous motor has
synchronous reactance of 𝑋𝑠 = 2.5 Ω per phase and the armature resistance is negligible. The load torque,
which is proportional to the speed squared, is 𝐼𝐿 = 398 𝑁 − 𝑚 at 1200 rpm. The power factor is maintained
at unity by field control and the voltage-to-frequency ratio is kept constant at the rated value. If the inverter
frequency is 20 Hz, and the motor speed is 700 rpm, determine
a) The input voltage, 𝐸𝑎
b) the armature current, 𝐼𝑎
c) the excitation voltage, 𝐸𝑓
d) the torque-angle, 𝛿
e) the pull-out torque, 𝑇𝑃
