1-A 3-phase induction motor runs at 1195 rpm at no load and 1140 rpm at full
load when supplied with power from 60 Hz 3-phase line.
a. What is the number of poles of the motor ?
b. What is the percentage slip at full load ?
c. What is the corresponding frequency of the rotor voltage ?
d. What is the speed of the rotor field w.r.t the rotor, w.r.t the stator ?
e. What is the speed of the stator field w.r.t the stator, w.r.t the rotor ?
f. What is the speed of the stator field w.r.t the rotor field ?
g. What speed would the rotor have at a slip of 10% ?
h. Repeat parts (c to f) for a slip of 10 % .

2-A 380 V, 50 HZ, 4-pole, Y-connected, 3-phase induction motor draws a line
current of 60 Amp at a power factor of 0.85 and slip of 0.04. The iron losses are
500 watts, the mechanical losses are 600 watts. The rotor and stator copper losses
are equal. Calculate at slip of 0.04:
a. The motor speed.
b. The gap power.
c. Total copper losses.
d. The efficiency of the motor.
e. The output torque.

3-A 4-pole, 50-Hz, 3-phase induction motor running at full load develops a torque
of 25 Kg.m and it is observed that the rotor emf makes 98 cycle/min. If the
mechanical torque lost due to friction and windage is 2 Kg.m. Find :
a. The output HP.
b. The rotor copper losses.
c. The input power to the motor.
d. The efficiency.

4- A 3-phase, delta-connected, 280 V, 60 Hz, 20 HP, four-pole induction motor has
the following equivalent circuit parameters in ohms:
𝑅1 = 0.12 𝛺 , 𝑅2′ = 0.1 𝛺 , 𝑋1 = 𝑋2′ = 0.25 𝛺 , 𝑋𝑚 = 10 𝛺 , 𝑅𝑐 = 80 Ω
The rotational losses is 400 W. For 2% slip, using the exact equivalent circuit,
determine:
a. The line current.
b. The stator copper losses.
c. The air gap power.
d. The rotor copper losses.
e. The developed power and the shaft power.
f. The developed torque and the shaft torque.
g. The efficiency.
Repeat the previous using the approximate equivalent circuit.

5- A 100 HP, 3-phase, Y connected, 440 V, 50 Hz, 8 pole slip ring induction motor
has the following equivalent circuit constants, all expressed in ohm/phase referred
to the stator:
𝑅1 = 0.085 Ω , 𝑅2′ = 0.067 Ω , 𝑋1 = 0.196 Ω , 𝑋2′ = 0.161 Ω ,
𝑋𝑚 = 6.65 Ω
No-load rotational losses = 2.7 KW
a. Compute the starting current, power factor, torque angle, and the internal
starting torque.
b. Compute the developed torque, output torque, HP output, motor speed,
stator current, power factor and efficiency at slip of 3%.
c. Compute the maximum torque and the speed at this condition
d. If the motor drives a load of constant torque of 300 N.m. Determine the
speed at which the motor will drive this load. Assume that the torque-
speed characteristic in the operating region is almost linear.
6- A 50 HP, 440 V, 3-phase, 4 pole, 60 HZ, wound rotor induction motor develops
its rated full load output at a speed 1746 rpm when operated at rated voltage and
frequency with its slip ring short circuited. The maximum torque is 200 % of full
load torque. The stator resistance and rotational losses can be neglected.
Determine
a. The speed at maximum torque.
b. The rotor copper losses at full load.
c. The starting torque as a percentage of the full load torque.

7- A 208-V, 6-pole, Y-connected 25-hp squirrel-cage induction motor is tested in


the laboratory, with the following results:
DC test 13.5 V, 64 A
No-load test : 208 V, 22 A, 1200 W, 60 Hz
Locked rotor test : 24.6 V, 64.5 A, 2200 W
Find the following:
a. The parameters of the equivalent circuit.
b. The starting torque, the full load torque and the overload capacity
c. The speed at maximum torque

8- A 500 HP, 8 poles, 3-phase, 6000 V, 50 HZ induction motor gives on test the
following figures:
Running light test : 6000 V 14 Amp/ph 15 KW
Locked rotor test : 2000 V 70 Amp/ph 30.5 KW
The resistance per phase of star connected stator winding is 1.1 ohm.
Determine:
a. The current and the power factor at half and full load.
b. The maximum output torque and the starting torque as a percentage of its
full load value.
9- An induction generator having a synchronous speed of 750 rpm is driven at 800
rpm with slip rings short circuited, the stator output is 9 KW, neglecting the stator
resistance, Determine:
a. The rotor copper losses.
b. The rotor resistance given that the voltage across the slip rings at standstill
is 260V (neglect rotor reactance).
c. The value of the external resistance to be inserted in the rotor circuit/
phase such that the rotor output is reduced to 4 KW.

10- A 3-phase, 250-kW, 460-V, 60 Hz, eight-pole induction machine is driven by


a wind turbine. The induction machine has the following parameters:
R1 = 0.015 Ω R′2 = 0.035Ω L1 = L2’ = 0.385 mH Lm = 17.24 mH
The induction machine is connected to a 460 V infinite bus through a feeder
having a resistance of 0.01 Ω and an inductance of 0.08 mH. The wind turbine
drives the induction machine at a slip of 2.5%.
a. Determine the speed of the wind turbine.
b. Determine the voltage at the terminals of the induction machine.
c. Determine the power delivered to the infinite bus and the power factor.
d. Determine the efficiency of the system. Assume the rotational and iron
losses to be 3 kW.
