Assignment 5, ELP-850

1. A 3 phase star connected load takes 50 A current at 0.707 p.f (lag) with 220 V
between the lines. In 3 phase star connected round rotor synchronous motor
having a synchronous reactance of 1.27 Ω/ phase is connected in parallel with the
load. Power developed by the motor is 33 kW at a power angle of 30 o. Calculate
the overall p.f of the motor and load.
2. A 6-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor has a rotor resistance of 0.25 W per
phase and a maximum torque of 10 Nm at 875 rpm. Calculate the torque (in Nm)
when the slip is 5%.
3. The per phase equivalent circuit parameters (referred to stator) of a 415-V, 6pole,
50Hz, three phase, delta-connected, induction motor are R1 = 0.9Ω, X1 = 1.2 Ω,
R2= 0.8 Ω, X2= 1.5Ω, and Xm=70 Ω. When the motor operates at a slip of 7%,
determine the power developed by the motor in kW.
4. An 11 kV, 3-phase, star-connected synchronous motor is running in parallel with
an infinite bus. It’s direct-and quadrature-axis synchronous reactance are 10Ω
and 5Ω respectively. If the field current is reduced to zero, find the total
maximum power per phase. Neglect armature resistance.
5. A 30 kW, 440 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase, 10-pole, delta-connected squirrel-cage induction
motor has the following parameters referred to a stator phase:
r1  0.54  r2  0.81 
x1  x2  6.48 
Iron loss resistance (ri )  414  xm  48.6 

Calculate the machine performance (input current, power, power factor,

mechanical output (gross) and torque developed (gross)) for the following
conditions considering approximate circuit model:
a. as a motor at a slip of 0.025.
b. as a generator at a slip of –0.025.
6. A 9-kVA, 208-V, 1200-rpm, three-phase, 60-Hz, Y-connected, synchronous
generator has a field-winding resistance of 4.5 Ω. The armature-winding
impedance is 0.3 + j5 Ω/phase. When the generator operates at its full load and
0.8 pf lagging, the field-winding current is 5 A. The rotational loss is 500 W.
Determine (a) the voltage regulation, (b) the efficiency of the generator, and (c)
the torque applied by the prime mover.
7. It is desired to install a 3-phase cage induction motor restricting the maximum
line current drawn from a 400 V 3-phase supply to 120 A. If the starting current
is 6 times full load current, what is the maximum permissible full load KVA of
the motor when
(i) it is directly connected to the mains
(ii) It is connected through an auto-transformer with a tapping of 60%
8. A 3-phase, 50 Hz, 8-pole alternator has a star-connected winding with 120 slots
and 8 conductors per slot. The flux per pole is 0.05 wb, sinusoidally distributed.
Determine the phase and line voltage. Consider a full-pitch coil.
9. Due to malfunctioning of the fuse in one of the phases of a 3-phase induction
motor, the motor was running in single phasing. Subsequently, the damaged fuse
is replaced and now, the motor is running in healthy condition. It is noticed that
the induced emf in the stator has frequency of 50 Hz and that in the rotor is 2 Hz.
Determine the running speed of the motor and slip speed when the motor is in
healthy condition? Assume number of poles as 8.
10. Calculate the value of synchronizing power in kW for one mech. degree of
displacement for a 3 phase, 20000 KVA, 6600 V, 50 Hz, 12 pole machine having
Xs = 25% and negligible resistance.
