Let Us Discover

This Simplified Self-Learning Module (SSLM) focuses on identifying the terms related to
a circle and you will also learn to draw circles with different radii using a compass.
Below are the important terms to remember related to a circle.

A circle is a set of all points in a plane with the same distance from
the certain point called the center. A circle is named with its center,
using a single letter. This letter is also used to name the circle. The
circle in figure 1 is named circle C.

A chord is a line segment joining two points on the circle.

AB is a chord for circle C.

The diameter is the longest line that passes through the center
of the circle. Every diameter is a chord. The diameter is two times
the radius. The diameter of the given circle is EF

A radius is a line segment from the center of the circle to any

point of the circle, (plural-radii). The radius of a circle is one-
half of the diameter. The radius if figure 4 is CF.

The circumference is the distance around the circle.

The arc is the part of the circle between any two

points. It is a part or portion of the circumference
of the circle.

A central angle is an angle formed by two radii. In circle X,

∠YXT, ∠SXZ, ∠ZXT are central angles.

An inscribed angle is an angle whose vertex is on the circle.

In circle X, ∠YZV is an inscribed angle.

Using your bare hands will not guarantee that you will be able to draw a perfect circle.
Do you know that we have an instrument used to draw a perfect circle?

A compass is an instrument used to draw circles. It consists of two movable arms

hinged together where one arm has a pointed end and the other arm holds a pencil.

Here are the steps in drawing circles using a compass.

1. Insert a sharp pencil into the holder of the compass.
2. Open the compass to the radius desired by your circle. The radius is the distance from
the center point of the circle to the outer edge.
3. Place the compass point on a piece of paper where you would like the center point of the
circle to be.
4. Place the point of the pencil on the paper.
5. Rotate the compass to mark a circle on the paper with the pencil. Draw without lifting the
point of the compass of the paper.
