ABSTRACT
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Cockfighting, also known as sabong, has become a culturally and

legally acceptable form of gambling among Filipinos. Sabong has mainly

influenced how its practitioners make a living as an established cultural

phenomenon. This research will examine what motivates senior high school

students to gamble in the cockpit and how they avoid it. The researcher is

interested in cockpit gamblers' firsthand accounts.

The study aimed to learn about and characterize the lived

experiences of senior high school students who participate in or play

cockfighting.

This phenomenology study included seven participants who met the criteria

we established. After examining the reports of 7 student cockfighters, the

study attained data saturation research. Data were gathered utilizing

interview questions that asked cockfighters to explain why they engaged in

the activity and what they did to steer clear of it.

This paper presents the findings of a small-scale qualitative analysis.

The key motivations of cockfighters were all examined through unstructured

interview interviews. Interviews were transcribed, edited, coded, and

analyzed to identify recurring theme components.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Cockfighting is a ring sport in which two roosters, or cocks (also

known as gamecocks), face off in a ring. The birds are typically chosen for

their proportions and aggression, and they also have blades (single-edged

or double-edged) affixed to their left legs, though some fights feature

blades on the animals' right legs or both legs, depending on owner

agreement. Cockfighting, also known as "sabong," was first observed in

the Philippines during Magellan's journey and discovery in 1521. It is a

popular hobby in the country, has existed for over a century. Filipinos of

all social classes participate in this betting pastime that has become

ingrained in their culture. Due to its popularity, "sabong" has spawned a

billion-dollar industry, with tens of thousands of cocks shattered. When a

Filipino house catches fire, he first saves his cock, then his wife, and

finally his children," as sarcastically said. Cockfighting became more

popular also in different country. This recreation has also gained

popularity in India as part of a regional version for Makar Sankranti.

Every fight became a big-money event. Even though it is prohibited,

many cockfighters continue to do so. This event involves a significant

4
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)

sum of money (Slater, 2019). The Indian tribal nation, on the other hand,

should be able to enjoy their land's rights and laws. The Kiowa people are

one of the Indian tribes who hold cockfighting as a cultural right;

therefore, they have the freedom to gamble at cockfighting. Two handlers

with multicolored gamecocks enter the arena and scream at their bets at

the Bayou membership in Vinton, Louisiana. A small, sandy coliseum in

the pit's center is ringed by a wire fence and Plexiglas (Hawley, 1982).

Cockers in America eat the highest-quality feed; they also need perfect

space because they don't confine all of their winged birds to small

enclosures. A genuine cockfighter does this for the money. (Zarley, 2015).

Globally, the ongoing COVID-19 situation has had a wide-ranging and

significant impact on people's lives. In addition to the physical harm

caused by the epidemic, it is thought to have a significant impact on the

general public's mental health. It has been proposed that among the

pandemic's possible effects and effects on daily life, addictive habits may

be strengthened. For instance, there may be a rise in the number of

people participating in cockfighting. The pandemic provided great timing

because many Filipinos are gamblers and were stuck at home getting

bored. There are also now teenagers, particularly students, who are

involved in cockfighting, and there is no age limit to gambling and

stopping minors from getting hooked on cockfighting. Since 1976, when

5

PAGCOR (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation) was founded

by Presidential Decree number 1067, gaming in Metro Manila has been

regulated. All of the PAGCOR's state-owned scope, which operates under

the direct supervision of the Office of the President, has three key

responsibilities: to control and manage all games of chance in the

country, particularly casino gaming; to generate and increase funds for

government projects such as infrastructure and socio-civic through

casino gaming; and to increase tourism throughout the country (Blog-

shops, 2020). In this instance, to decrease face-to-face contact and stop

the virus from spreading, the national government forbids playing Sabong

in all regions of the Philippines. As a result of this incident, Online

Sabong or E-Sabong is at its height during the Lockdown & New Normal

period; the beginning of the stated that the online game is unnamed.

Several athletes who aren't very into already switching to utilizing

cellphones or the internet and learning to adapt to wager and play. Given

that the Covid-19 virus is still alive and a new variation, the duration of

the new normal, and the likelihood of returning to face-to-face

competition, Sabong is losing all of his points. The only way is to play it

online.

We discovered that senior high school students engage in

cockfighting in the Barangay Becques area. As a result, we must research

cockfighting to learn about their personal experiences and their

motivations for participating in cockfighting, and strategies or avoiding it.

Framework of the Study

The conceptual framework that guided this investigation is

discussed in this section. To investigate senior high school students'

cockfighting experiences, motivations, and methods.

Gambling

Figure 1. Conceptual Framework

Game of Risk

They sell their cocks to others at high prices; cockfighting may be

both a risk and a business. Cockfighters engage in the sport because it is

a part of their culture and passion. Nonetheless, we are all aware that

betting on cockfights has implications, and you must be aware of them.

Some students at this period risk their money by participating in

cockfighting; they risk their money without recognizing that they are also

risking their education. Furthermore, if you choose to participate in

cockfight gambling, you must accept all of the repercussions and accept
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS11)

the outcome. Placing a wager on a cockfight can keep you busy because

you want to win, yet you end up losing (Sentencia, 2007).

Experiences

They swiftly make a hand signal to place a bet on their favorite

team when the game begins. The arena filled with determined yelling from

the cockfighters as the game heated up. They both agreed that engaging

in cockfight activities was for the purpose of making extra money

(Almendral, 2013).

There are a few seconds of silence after that, and then the two

roosters begin battling each other while the audience yell. Some of them

are shouting their bets and flashing their money. The winning team gets

the money after the game, while the roosters lie on the ground with blood

on their money (Buncombe, 2005).

Going back to the attack at Resort World Manila in 2017, the

gunman's name was Carlo, and he was a huge cockfighting bettor. He

used to own a two-hectare farm, especially for his Gamecocks in Tanuan

City, Batangas province. According to Dodong Ablao, the village chairman

of Barangay Darasa, where Carlos had been for the previous five years,

he was an impetuous gambler. It's fine for him to lose a million dollars in

a single game (Inquirer, 2017).

Gambling

9
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Cockfighting is classified as gambling because the majority of men

participate in it. They spend their time traveling to cockfight gambling

venues. Cockfighters wager at that moment because they believe they

have a chance to win the game.

Cockfighters in the Philippines indulge in cockfighting to preserve

native Filipino culture and customs. Cockfighters indulge in cockfighting

for specific reasons in this situation. Cockfighters engage in this type of

gambling because they want to double their money and have a good time.

They are inspired to place a wager on their favorite team when they

think about happiness since they already know that cockfight gambling is

a 50/50 possibility.

Strategies

Some cockfighters have stopped partaking in this type of gambling

since they have realized a number of things. Some people concentrate on

their personal lives, while others concentrate on their businesses.

Knowing their tactics for avoiding this type of gambling is also beneficial

to others.

Statement of the Problem

This study looked at the experiences of senior high school students who

engage in cockfighting games.

It aimed to answer the following questions in particular:

1. Why are there senior highschool students participate in cockfighting?

2. What are the ways of senior high school students in order to avoid

participating in or playing cockfighting?

Scope and Delimitation

The study was limited to students in senior high school who had

participated in cockfighting and were inhabitants of Barangay Becques.

Our proposed questions are related to the theme of cockfighters' living

experiences. Participants would be allowed to respond to the questions

only based on their own experiences and perceptions.

According to Creswell (1998), phenomenological research should have 5-

25 participants, although Morse (1994) suggests that participants should

be at least six, depending on the saturation stage. As a result, this study

included seven participants who had previously gambled in cockfights.

The participants were from Barangay Becques, Tagudin.

11
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Significance of the Study

The purpose of the research is to address the problem and present

conclusions and solutions based on the points of view and opinions of the

participants and others who are involved in this study. It could provide

folks with pertinent information for their benefit.

This study could help with the following:

To the cockfighters, to understand what they were doing in terms

of their common thoughts on this research.

To the cockfighter's family, explain why their daughter or son is

participating in cockfighting.

To the citizens of Barangay Becques, in order to explain why

senior high school students cockfighters participate in cockfight

gambling.

To the students and future researchers, to provide them an

understanding of why senior high school students are participating in

cockfighting, as well as to enable them to know and grasp each

participant's point of view.

Definition of Terms

The terms used in the research are operationally defined as;

Cockfighting – is an activity that needs luck in order for you to

win. It was an event that occurred in Barangay during occasions such

as Fiestas.

Cockfighters – are the ones who put a bet on/her chosen team and

participate in cockfight gambling.

Cockfight – an organized fight between two cocks fighting against

each other.

Game of risk – a game that leads you to a win or loses situation

where a cockfighter puts an amount of money to his/her chosen team

and just waits for the result.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, participants and

research, instrumentation and data collection, and data analysis.

Research Design

The research design was defined as the methods of the process and

strategies that the researcher would like to use to organize the data

logically and to keep the research topic in mind (Bhat, 2019).

Researchers have descriptive research in study design, which is very

beneficial in making the assertion clear and stable through its intricate

details (Mittal, 2010).

In summary, determining the behavior of cockfighters involved in

cockfighting was simple for us because it simply defines the

circumstance that we could apply through our interpretation, and by

doing so, it could be a result of a detailed information qualitative

research.

In terms of continuity, the naturalistic approach falls within

qualitative research, and it is a method that investigates contemporary

social issues. D. Cohen and B. Crabtree (2006).

The researchers chose cockfighting for the definition because it is

both a natural and modern phenomenon. Furthermore, qualitative

research studies typically seek answers to questions about the

"what","how" and “why” of phenomena, according to green & Thorogood

14
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

(2004). Phenomenology is one of these methods used to describe how

humans experience a specific sensation.

Cockfighting is a phenomenological study because it is a

phenomenon that exists in our society, as we have seen in Barangay

Becques. Even if the location changed, cockfighters continued to attend

and participate.

Furthermore, we are merely researchers who gathered data based solely

on the lived experiences of cockfighters in the sport of cockfighting.

Researchers employed phenomenology to describe how student

cockfighters in Barangay Becques experienced cockfighting, and we also

tried to set aside biases and previous preconceptions about their

experiences.

Participants and research site

It refers to the research study's aim in the case of a research

participant. With that, purposive sampling is one of the samplings in

getting participant. It is the non-probability sampling that chooses

according to the manners of a population that was known as judgmental

sampling (Given, 2008). In connection with our topic, we used the said

sampling because it was applicable for us to select our participants'

based on our critical thinking to determine who is involved to

15
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

cockfighting in a way of setting criteria in which it could serve as a guide

for us in choosing our participants.

Furthermore, our participants were senior high school students

who had previously participated in cockfighting.

As a result, we researchers chose Barangay Becques as the

location for our participants since we saw that most of the students'

cockfighters who live here met our criterion. As a result, meeting our

participants in this area was simple .In the transcription of results, the

participants names were coded as P1,P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 and P7 by the

researchers to ensure anonymity and confidentiality. The location of the

study will be at the participant’s house.

Instrumentation and Data collection

We researchers must meticulously document any potentially useful

data while collecting the data, using an audio recorder to capture every

word our participants stated.

Data collection is gathering all of the information needed from a

reputable source to find a solution to the research problem and, at the

same time, test and refine the hypothesis (Rouse, 2016).

We could get information through interviews or audiovisuals. We

were able to conduct interviews with the subjects who provided us with

the data for our study.

16
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

An interview is a dialogue in which information is gathered. The

interviewer is the one who asks the questions and processes the

discussion, while the interviewee is the one who answers them. It might

happen in person or over the phone (Easwaramoorthy and Zarinpoush,

2006).

We picked an unstructured interview for our study since it would

be easier for us to gather the participants' responses. It would also not

be difficult for them or us because we are not limited to the question

asked.

An informal interview is another name for an unstructured interview.

The inquiries are not always planned and asked without restriction,

even if they are out of sequence. There are also questions that may be

overlooked or added. (McLeod, 2014).

Individual interviews are one of the procedures used in data collection.

Individual interviews are commonly utilized in research as a data

collection method. It is worthwhile to get or gather information from

persons who do not have their perceptions, understandings, or

experiences of the issue in question. 2013 (Ryan, Coughlan, and

Cronin).

We decided as a group to have an in-depth individual interview so

that we might get a better result. Participants can also feel free to talk

about their experiences as cockfighters in private.

17
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Data Analysis

Data analysis is a method of systematic finding and organizing the

transcripts and observation notes of the researcher as part of qualitative

research. It will be more stable as a result (Wong, 2008).

It is critical to follow the proper procedure when analyzing the data to

produce the appropriate theme for our cockfighting topic. The steps are

transcribing, translating, coding, collating, and creating a piece.

To begin, transcribing is a word-for-word process carried out

through individual group or group interviews. You can write the spoken

words of your participants while transcribing (Mondada, 2007).

It is critical to have our phone for audio recording during the

interview while transcribing our data. We write everything down,

including the participants' demeanor.

Transcription is a difficult task that requires translation from one

language to another. Translation can take up a lot of time and effort

(Mondada, 2007).

We needed the translation because we interviewed in our native

language, and we wanted our participants to feel comfortable answering

the questions.

18
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Coding is a method of analyzing data for similarities and

differences. After that, you can group comparable data and place it in its

proper location (Wong, 2008).

After we had transcribed and translated everything in our research, it

was time to sort their responses into categories using letters to identify

themes.

The Cambridge Dictionary defines collate as "bringing together

different pieces of information to analyze and compare them."

After coding, it's time to put everything together to create the theme

we've been looking for. We separated the answers that differed from the

majority and compared them in our research (Maguire, 2017).

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

This chapter begins with the description of data analysis and then

moves on to a discussion of the research results. That the answers to

20

the research questions are relevant. The study's overall findings and

suggestions for additional research are also the main topics of this

chapter. The current study's findings are supported by a

phenomenological investigation carried out among senior high school

students in Barangay Becques. They participate in cockfighting, for

which we interviewed to gather information.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

The findings in this article were attained using qualitative

research techniques that mostly use interviews and observation. The

results were interpreted in order to highlight the Experience of Senior

high school students in cockfighting.

FOCUS STUDYING

Accepting the consequence they made while playing or participating

in cockfighting leads these student cockfighters to focus on their studies;

it became their coping mechanism to avoid it, as stated by all the

participants.

“nagpokus ako sa pag aaral ko at tuluyan kong kinalimutan ang

paglalaro.”

“ay binago ko ang buhay ko at nag aral nalang akong mabuti.”

“nagpokus ako sa pag aaral ko at binago ang sarili.”

“inuna ko ang aking pag aaral at mga priorities sa buhay”

21
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

“nilibang ang sarili sa pag aaral”

“prinaority ko ang aking pag aaral at tinuon ko nalang ang oras ko dito”

This section discusses the student cockfighters' steps to stop

engaging in cockfighting in the future. Their only means of avoiding it is

by concentrating on their studies. Another reason was that cockfighters

including youngsters nowadays prefer to participate in these kinds of

events for a reason that they apparently enjoy them (Bekoff, 2011).

IT’S MORE FUN ON COCK

Fun is one aspect of life that cockfighters tend to like. Fun is the

idea that cockfighting is something to be enjoyed while being played.

They can consistently have fun in their life if they can play with this idea

in their minds every day. When you discover that element of fun, even on

days when their circumstances aren't great right now, things can start to

change. In giving their thoughts about the theme, seven student

cockfighter participants answered as follows:

Ang sabong para sa akin ay isang sugal kung saan sumasali at naglalaro

kami para maging masaya. (P1)

Para sa akin ang sabong ay isang sugal kung saan napapasaya ako nito

kapag naglalaro. (P2)

22
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Ang sabong ay isang sugal para sa akin na kung saan kapag naglalaro

ako nito sumasaya ako. (P3)

Every time they engaged in cockfighting, the participants—who are

cockfighters—felt joy. We discovered that cockfighters frequently

participate in the sport to have fun. Additionally, they believed that

happiness was more essential than money, even if they lost it all. They

are responsible for their own participation in cockfighting activities..

Cockfighting is a sport that has long been practiced, and most

cockfighters often engage in it for enjoyment rather than for financial gain

(Titthara & White, 2014). Cockfighting is done for entertainment in

Cabuyao, Laguna, to socialize with the boys and have a good time. And

praying a friend succeeds so he can drink a beer and consume one of the

unsuccessful roosters (Almendral 2013). Additionally, according to the

associated information, cockfights are merely for entertainment because

participants don't care how much money is at risk as long as they have

fun and have time to spend with their friends or other bettors. Another

reason was that modern-day cockfighters, even young people, choose to

take part in these kinds of activities since they seem to enjoy them

(Bekoff, 2011).

EASY MONEY

23
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

All of these student cockfighters need money to meet their

requirements and wants for themselves or their families, and they are

willing to play cockfighting and risk losing their school allowances to

increase it. Five student cockfighters answered as follows:

Cockfighting is helpful because cockfighters can buy their wants if and

only they win because they already have much money to buy anything

they need for a reason that in cockfighting, if you’ll win the money you

put can make your money double but it depends to the money you stake

(Almendral 2013).

HELPFUL

Cockfighters see cockfighting as beneficial because they think that

while they play, they aren't too focused on their issues in life or their

24
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

studies. Additionally, this senior high school's cockfighters use the sport

as stress relief. As stated by participant 4,6 and 7.

“Masaya ako kapag naglalaro ng sabong kasi sa gantong paraan hindi ko

naiisip ang mga pinagdadaanan ko sa buhay.”(P4)

“Masaya kasi nakakalimutan ko yung mga problema ko at mga

responsibilidad.” (P6)

“Masaya minsan kasi parang pag naglalaro ako nawawala yung nga bigat

na nararamdaman ko lalo na kapag nanalo pa ako.” (P7)

RECREATION

The majority of the cockfighters claimed that it is their pastime to

engage in cockfighting. They frequently attend cockfight events to

participate since there are times when they are idle. And when these

student cockfighters have free time, they frequently play cockfighting. As

participants 6 and 7 stated that for them, they play cockfighting when it's

their free time.

“libangan”

“libangan at sugal”

According to the cockfighters, there are no specific reasons why

they enjoy getting involved and taking part in cockfight activities.

Nevertheless, they continue to attempt to breed and train roosters for

25
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

cockfighting. Every time they have free time, they love to attend

cockfighting events (Ismail,2016).

INFLUENCE

Cockfighters become interested in the sport because they take up

cockfighting as a hobby after inheriting it from their families. They are

passionate about taking part in cockfight activities since it runs in their

blood. Additionally, cockfighters were influenced by their father and other

family members, which is why they engaged in this form of gambling.

With that, they are already aware of how to manage their cocks while also

caring for them so that they will get stronger and be prepared to battle.

Additionally, they are the ones who keep engaging in this type of

wagering in cases when their other family members or father made the

initial bet. As stated by participant 6:

“Ang naging rason ko sa paglalaro ay dahil ito sa tatay ko na namatay na

mahilig din maglaro ng sabong kumbaga namana ko ito sa kanya.”

Early in the history of the state of Utah, the sports made their way

there as the frontier moved west. The Utah cockers adhere to southern

cocking customs while also incorporating some Mexican practices. A

fourteen-year-old boy's family exposed him to cockfighting at a young age

(Walker,2019).

As a result, one of the cockfighters' motivations is that their family

influences them, and as a result, they become involved in cockfight

26
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)

gambling. Because they continue to participate in cockfights, which their

family fledged for them, they become increasingly engaged in the

gambling industry.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

Focus studying

Due to cockfighters' experiences in participating in cockfighting,

many have begun to shun it and concentrate on their education, so

they recognize the need for reform for the betterment of themselves

and their future.

Its more fun on cock

This student cockfighters finds happiness in participating in

cockfights. The cockfighters who took part in the activity experienced

joy each time.

Easy Money

Student cockfighters stake their allowance on the battle's outcome,

and if they win, they plan to use the winnings to fulfill their needs and

desires.

Helpful

27
ILOCOS SUR POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE SHS (HUMSS 11)
Tagudin, Ilocos Sur

Cockfighters playing cockfighting are helpful to them because

whenever they are playing, their focus is just on the game, and

participants can't think about the problems they are facing.

Recreation

Every time they have free time, student cockfighters typically play

cockfighting because it is their hobby, and they use it as a way to

unwind.

Influence

Since participating in cockfight activities runs in their family, these

cockfighters are passionate about doing so. They inherited playing

cockfighting from their relatives.
