WORLD
CONTEMPLATE Think of how you are connected with the other parts of the world. The
following questions could guide you in your thinking:

Do you have any family, friends, or relatives living in other countries? How do you
communicate with them? Have you been to other countries (for leisure work, or studies,
among others?

What are your thoughts?

In my case, I have a sister who worked as a foreign teacher in Thailand. For
me to keep in touch, I always communicate with her using the internet and cellphones
as I believe that it has the greatest positive impact on the quality of communication
with family members living elsewhere, and it brought the family closer together no
matter how far the distance between each other.

I have a twitter account, and I follow some personalities. Do you feel you
are connected with other countries in the world?

Twitter accounts connect you with the people you’re interested in- whether that’s
someone across the world who shares your love for science-fiction, your friends and
family, or politician as long as you consider yourself as connected, you are connected
with other countries through the use of social media account.

What are the aspects in your life do you identify as

connected with other citizens of the world? (family, friendship,
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

Friendship, consumption, studies and readings, etc) .

How do you feel about being connected or disconnected

with other people in the world? Why?

We live in a world where we are connected with other people- socially, politically,
economically, and environmentally. High trade between countries, the development of
international organizations, and changes in transport and communications technology
mean that these connections are rapidly expanding. Moreover, we are connected to
people and places all around the world in many ways and we feel comfortably
connected by the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the goods in our homes, the sport
we play, the music we listen to, and the movie we watch.

What are your thoughts regarding two competing paradigms of development-
development by building business in the ancestral land and development from the
point of view of indigenous people?

Indigenous peoples, also known in some regions as First peoples, First Nations,
Aboriginal peoples or Native peoples or autochthonous peoples, are ethnic groups who
are the original or earliest known inhabitants of an area, in contrast to groups that have
settled, occupied, or colonized the area more recently. Indigenous peoples have
dynamic living cultures and seek their place in the modern world. In my opinion, they
are not against development, but for too long years ago, they have been casualties of
development and presently craving to be partakers in—and to benefit from—sustainable
development. In addition, Indigenous cultures are at the highest risk of cultural
loss through cultural globalization because indigenous people often lack the power and
influence needed to protect their ways and lands against the interests of more powerful
outsiders.

Describe young people lifestyle- food, media, fashion; art, movies, and music (cite
some examples).

Fashion trends come and go. Meanwhile, a society’s values are established and evolving characteristics
to their beliefs and culture. Fashion is just not an ambitious projected image of a reinterpreted good old
value to fulfill some function or agenda alike but rather an evocative and refreshing concept worthy
enough to be portrayed for society’s appreciation that makes us even more instinctive. An individual
starts seeking a solution to reduce his dissonance or he aspires to get better. As an expression of their
feelings, today’s youth endeavor to interpret fashion trends and adopt the clothing style that suits their
value and traits. It is a trickle across theory where the trick of aesthetic experience has given rise to
everyday fashion and cognitive engagement. Besides the traditional social agenda of fashion trends, it is
the attitude of generation Z that has set forth the trend of different styles and self-expression. Having
transcended from a pre-capitalist feudal social structure to a postmodern social structure, today’s
behavior is marked by self-image and self-expression paving the way for uniqueness and social
conformation. This is common among today’s youth who are in the identity creation stage of Erikson’s
psychosocial development to look for trendy dress choices

What or who influenced you to adopt that kind of lifestyle?

For me, the aspect that influenced me to adopt different kinds of lifestyles is
socio-economic statues, level of education, family, kin and social networks, gender,
age, and interpersonal influence that affect the choice of lifestyle. Through
globalization, we connect and relate to others by adapting their lifestyles and cultures.

Research on Philippine BPO‘s and the origin of Starbucks. Explain
transnational corporations by dramatizing the BPO‘s and the story of
Starbucks. And answer the following questions;
1. What are Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies?
2. What coffee did ourents
par drink before Starbucks?

Starbucks is currently the largest transnational coffeehouse company in the world, with 23,768 stores
spread across 67 countries. Starbucks utilize unique globalizing strategies to become a large transnational
corporation, while still maintaining its ethical values. Currently, many transnational companies focus on
sourcing efficiency, as they strive to find the cheapest labor in the global market and methods to
strategically reduce taxes and regulations. This business approach results in many workers to live
dramatically below the poverty line, especially those working in third world countries. Starbucks follows
the vertical integration model in regards to its global production networks, where its coffee are produced
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

through its own international coffee farms. The supplies are then ships to privately owned roasting plants.
However, the company takes a much more ethical approach towards the social injustice through its
Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices. The reason Starbucks has trans-nationalized is driven by
its goals to override competitors in the coffee market as well as accessing larger opportunities in the
international markets.
What Is Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)?
Business process outsourcing (BPO) is a method of subcontracting various business-related operations
to third-party vendors.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
 Business process outsourcing (BPO) utilizes third-party vendors or subcontractors to carry out
certain parts of their business operations.
 BPO began with large manufacturing companies to aid with supply chain management, but today
BPO has grown to include all sorts of sectors, including services companies.
 BPO will be considered "offshore outsourcing" if the vendor or subcontractor is located in a
different country; for instance, in the case of customer support.

Broadly speaking, companies adopt BPO practices in the two main areas of back-office and front
office operations. Back office BPO refers to a company contracting its core business support operations
such as accounting, payment processing, IT services, human resources, regulatory compliance, and
quality assurance to outside professionals who ensure the business runs smoothly.

 In what way does globalization causes problems in our country?

 Globalization is the connection of diverse parts of the world. In economics, globalization

can be defined as the process in which businesses, organizations, and countries begin
operating on an international scale. Globalization is most often used in an economic
context, but it also affects and is affected by politics and culture. In general, globalization
has been shown to increase the standard of living in developing countries. Globalization
provides businesses with a competitive advantage by allowing them to source raw
materials where they are inexpensive. Globalization also allows organizations to take
advantage of lower labor costs in developing countries while leveraging the technical
expertise and experience of more developed economies. In contrast, not everything about
globalization is beneficial. Any change has winners and losers, and the people living in
communities that had been dependent on jobs outsourced elsewhere often suffer.
Effectively, this means that workers in the developed world must compete with lower-
cost markets for jobs; unions and workers may be unable to defend against the threat of
corporations that offer the alternative between lower pay or losing jobs to a supplier in a
less-expensive labor market. The situation is more complex in the developing world,
where economies are undergoing rapid change. Certainly, the working conditions of
people at some points in the supply chain are unpleasant. Despite the great impact of it on
the advancement of our country, globalization has been threatening our lives and the
worst thing is that we, Filipinos, are not aware of this threat brought by the phenomenon.
The widening of the gap between the rich and poor people, a result of globalization, puts
the Philippines deeper in the quicksand of poverty and also causes social injustices
among men. The deprivation of jobs and resources from its citizens causes the people to
die unattended. The possibilities of the widespread of diseases are similarly one of the
difficulties that our country confronts today,
Who are the important actors shaping globalization? What are your thoughts?

The important actors in shaping globalization are all of us, the consumers like us who buy the

Let us think about how economic globalization affects the community. The important
institutions related to global economy are provided below. Select one or two concepts or words. Discuss

o International Monetary Fund (IMF)

The IMF promotes monetary cooperation and provides policy advice and capacity development
support to preserve global macroeconomic and financial stability and help countries build and maintain
strong economies. The IMF advises member countries on economic and financial policies that promote
stability, reduce vulnerability to crises, and encourage sustained growth and high living standards. It also
monitors global economic trends and developments that affect the health of the international monetary
and financial system and promotes dialogue among member countries on the regional and global
consequences of their policies. In addition to these surveillance activities, the IMF provides technical
assistance to help strengthen members’ institutional capacity and makes resources available to them to
facilitate adjustment in the event of a balance of payments crisis. Furthermore, The International
Monetary Fund (IMF) gave the Philippines $2.8 billion (P139.4 billion) worth of special drawing rights
(SDRs), boosting the country’s foreign exchange buffer and adding a funding source for COVID-19
expenses.

o Global Civil Society

The global civil society serves to channel global public opinions and put policy ideas onto
the international agenda. It indirectly strengthens the capacity of the subjects to influence
global actions and enhances the accountability of international decision-making processes.
Although it has limitations in procedural representation, global civil society bridges the gap
between ordinary people and international actions. A strong global non-governmental sector
thus enhances the accountability of international decision-making and promotes global
democratic processes. The presence of civil society organizations in international affairs has
become increasingly relevant. They have played a role in agenda setting, international law-
making, and diplomacy. Further, they have been involved in the implementation and
monitoring of several crucial global issues. These range from trade to development and poverty
reduction, from democratic governance to human rights, from peace to the environment, and
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

from security to the information society. Because of these reasons, international relations
cannot be fully captured without taking into account the actions of civil society organizations.

History

It was in the middle part of 1565 when the Spaniards came and subjugated
Himamaylan. Aside from subduing the people of the settlement, it was also the desire of
the Spaniards to introduce the religion to them and the form of government they bring.
They introduced the Encomiends System by which a piece of land including its products
and other resources, and its inhabitants were granted to members of the conquering
force as their puppets.

Himamaylan was founded in the 18th century and it became the second capital of
Negros Island from 1795-1849.

Because of the oppressions that the people were experiencing from the Spaniards,
revolutionary movements were created. On November 4, 1898, these revolutionary
forces received orders from Gen. Juan Araneta to disclose the Spanish Soldiers
stationed in the town on November 5, and the rest of the towns in Negros. Because of
the lack of weapons, they were not able to foolow the command. It was only on
November 8, 1898 when the Deputy Commander for Southern Negros showed a copy
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

of the Act of Capitulation tot he Spanish Corporal, that the Spanish Soldiers
surrendered and freed the Himamaylan. Himamaylan was the last town to have been
liberated from the Spanish Government.

Let us think about how globalization affects government and nation - state.
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

Scenario; Hawkers (2008) explained the ―nutrition transition‖ happening in

developing countries as an effect of globalization. This transition results in consumption
of high- calorie, nutrient- poor foods which are high in fats and sugars resulting in rise of
obesity and diet- related chronic diseases worldwide. What could be your policy advice
to an international development agency like FAQ and a government of a middle –
income developing country on appropriate policies to migrate the negative effects of
nutrition transition on local stakeholders like farmers and poor families?
Hawkers explained that In a "nutrition transition", the consumption of foods high in fats and sweeteners is
increasing throughout the developing world, while the share of cereals is declining; intake of fruits and
vegetables remains inadequate [1]. These poor quality diets are associated with rising rates of
overweight, obesity and diet-related chronic diseases, like heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.
More people now die of heart disease in developing countries than in developed, and the problem is
becoming more serious among the poor [2]. Low quality diets are also associated with under nutrition in
the form of micronutrient deficiency, which, in turn, lowers immunity to infectious diseases. Poor diet
quality is thus associated with a dual burden of malnutrition and disease. https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A

My policy advice to an international development agency like (FAQ) is that as they are health
policymakers, their primary goal is to win against hunger and increase nutrition and food security,
therefore, they should pay more attention to these policies to deal with some of the negative effects of
nutrition transition worldwide, primarily among the organizations of low socioeconomic status mainly
on local stakeholders like farmers and poor families around the world.

Select a particular issue or challenge in modern that your organization could work on what are
ways in which this organization could help address this issue or challenge?

In the world, we are in a battle of our lives against the coronavirus. The Covid-19
pandemic is one of the greatly hazardous challenges this world has met face to face in
our lifetime. It is overall a humanitarian dilemma with serious health and socio-economic
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

impacts. It has caused many people including myself. I'm now at home every day and it
is causing me socially. Not being able to talk to friends and see people. I see regularly is
difficult for me. Also, presently that university is locked for almost a year it has affected
my college life. I am now used to being at home all the time and working on the
computer. Not like in the past years that I'm usually in a classroom surrounded by my
peers. However, I am human so I will learn to adjust, but now, it is difficult. It has
affected me personally from the social and educational perspectives, but I know around
the world t's affecting others as well. In the Philippines, which is one of the countries
around the world that were hit badly by the virus, the pandemic has also affected the
youth. Youth are now forced to stay home instead of going to school and spending time
with friends. Most kids need to be outdoor and with people to release their energy and
socialize. Now, this cannot happen, because the virus has affected us so much. One
thing we also see occurrence is food insecurities and social distancing. Due to what is
happening in the world, people are very much afraid and uncertain about food supply
and interactions with people. People are afraid and are warned to stay inside, so we
stock up supplies that will last them about a month. Usually, people get stuff that will last
them about two weeks, but now we need to stay home as much as we can. With social
distancing, we now detach ourselves from other parts of society. This has brought me to
feel very much detached from my friends. Humans are given rise to being out and about
and socializing with entities on Earth. These depressing events have led many people
to be isolated from society. This has stimulated my mind to get on to the dark side,
where my fears come out. My inner fear is “How long will my life be on pause?” I’m
scared of how long I will be stuck in the house and can’t see my friends and relatives.
Will it be a couple more weeks or will it be a couple of months or a couple of years? To
solve and overcome this pandemic, we need to build stronger partnerships among the
health care sector and other social and economic sectors. Working collaboratively to
deal with the multiple interconnected issues will take it manageable.

CREATE

Create a collage that depicts ―A global citizen

LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

.‖ You need to prepare the collage artwork in a one-piece cartolina. You should reflect
on the qualities and characteristics of a global citizen and what a global citizen does or
is into. The class will hold an exhibit where each student could showcase his/her output
and explain it to the class.

ASSESSMENT

Here are questions that you could reflect on to further understand the concepts
discussed in this chapter:

1. What does domesticating an international norm mean?

LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

Its domestication is a clear commitment that a nation/state party is committed to

keeping the world peace starting with its national and persons within its borders.
Domesticating International law strengthens the protection, promotion, and re-
enforce human rights in a country.

2. What is an example of globalization initiatives affecting local government?

The globalization of knowledge has also led to many possibilities in the local economy. Growth
in the electronics industry has paved the way for faster and wider information and communication
technology (ICT) diffusion in Cebu. Educational institutions and IT companies aimed at improving the
number and 4 quality of IT graduates in Cebu to meet foreign and local demands. Local ICT initiatives to
improve service delivery to the public have also been started. Glocalization in Cebu is manifested in the
key areas of business, export trade, governance, and transborder diplomacy. While there are positive
consequences of globalization – decentralization of power, improved governance, economic efficiency
and expanded communications - there are also challenges posed by it. Negative outcomes include
persistent poverty and increasing inequalities. The digital divide between the “information rich” and
“information poor”, whether it be on a country, regional or local level, widen. In this regard, local
initiatives in Cebu, spearheaded by the private sector and civil society groups, seek to address these
attendant effects by providing technology and skills to disadvantaged groups such as in barangays within
the city and outside of Metropolitan Cebu. Government can work with the private sector on providing
safety nets for these disadvantaged groups.

https://pidswebs.pids.gov.ph/CDN/PUBLICATIONS/pidsdps1021.pdf

3. Name an international organization and identify its role in global

governance

The World Trade Organization is a major player in the field of global

governance. Since its creation in January 1995, it has expanded the reach of trade
rules deep into the regulatory structure of almost 140 sovereign states, affecting the
daily lives of all citizens. As a result, it has found itself at the center of controversy in
areas that are well outside the domain of traditional trade policy. The response of
public interest groups in Seattle and elsewhere has been to demand a role in WTO
LOREDO, JESSA MAE D. BEED 2A

processes and for the WTO to undertake major reforms. Reform will not come easily.
The architects of the WTO are proud of having created what they consider to be a
major achievement in institutionalized global economic cooperation. They point to
the success of the WTO in doing what governments wanted it to do: to reduce
barriers to trade and to conduct that trade according to agreed rules. The central
question is how wise policy makers should respond to the pressures now falling on
the WTO system while ensuring the preservation of a trading system that has led to
unprecedented growth in the world economy and contributed to the peaceful
coexistence of nations. This question is addressed in this book. A number of
prominent personalities representing a broad spectrum of interests in the field of
international policy-making, and with a strong interest in a well-functioning trading
system, offer their views on the role of the WTO in Global Governance.
