MUSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ASIAN MUSICAL THEATER

Background Information for the Learners (BIL)

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs,
spoken dialogue, acting and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical –
humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through words, music, movement and technical
aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with
other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance
given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. Since the
early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

Most of the traditional forms of Asian performing art combine drama, dance and music
into a kind of whole in which it is difficult to draw a clear borderline between these art forms.
Most of the Asian traditions employ either dance or dance-like, stylised movements, while
movements are frequently interwoven with text. In addition to this, most of the traditions are
characterised by their own specific musical styles or genres. The acting technique, which
employs dance-like body language, is usually very intricate and it demands many years of
arduous training, as western ballet technique, for example, does. Therefore in Asia it is simply
not possible to classify stage arts as nonverbal “dance” or “spoken theatre”.
Puppet theater and one of its variations, shadow theatre, are often regarded as valued
“classical” traditions in Asia, whereas in the western tradition puppet theatre is, with only a
few exceptions, regarded merely as children’s entertainment.

Noh and Kabuki are considered the most important Japanese contribution in the world
of theater. They are both unique and genuine expressions of the Japanese spirit and culture.
Sakura is a Japanese traditional song that produces distinct characteristics used in the Asian
style of making melodies known the pentatonic scale. Pentatonic scale is mostly used in the
performance of Noh and Kabuki. Japanese theatre uses three vocal techniques:
a. Ipponchōshi (continuous pattern)
✓ is used in speeches building up to an explosive climax in the arogato
style (oversize, super natural, rough hero)
✓ it requires an extraordinary breath control
b. Nori (adapted from chanting or jōjuri)
✓ it implies a very sensitive capacity of riding the rhythms of the shamisen
c. Yakuharai - a vocal technique delivered in a subtle way of performing poetical text
written in the Japanese metrical form of alternating seven and five
syllables.
Chinese theater was considered the highest form of arts in China. Peking Opera theater,
is a stylized Chinese form of Opera in which speech, singing, mime, and acrobatics are
performed to an instrumental accompaniment. Peking Opera has two main styles of music: erh-
huang and his-p’l. These styles are very similar and the only difference is the key. His-p’l has
lower sound than the erh-huang. They also utilize the technique called fan-pan which is
commonly used for sorrowful songs, and is only sung by bearded characters.

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 1

The actor’s delivery lines is rigidly controlled by conventions. Each role has its
prescribed vocal timbre and pitch, and syllables are often drawn out with regards to
conversational usage in order to maintain the appropriate rhythm. Even spoken passages are
governed by strict rhythms and tempos. Chanted and sung passages are freely inserted into
spoken monologues or dialogues. Thus lines are rendered in an extremely stylized manner.

Shadow Puppet Theater is a well-known Indonesian Theater popular not only in their
own country but spread in several countries around the world. Wayang Kulit is one of the oldest
continuous traditions of storytelling in the world which includes the use of puppet materials
and background musical accompaniment to make it interesting to the audience.
Gamelan music has three important roles is Wayang Kulit. Aside from setting the mood
or atmosphere of a play, it accompanies the singing/chanting and stage actions including dance.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS USED IN KABUKI, WAYANG KULIT AND
PEKING OPERA

Background Information for Learners:

Kabuki is a popular form of Japanese musical drama characterized by elaborate
costuming and make-up and stylized dancing, music and acting Both male and female acting
roles are performed by men. Kabuki has been influenced by Noh theater and bunraku puppet
plays. Unlike Noh theater, which has traditionally been a classical art form enjoyed by the
upper classes, kabuki has been a popular form of theater enjoyed by the masses.
The musical instruments mainly played were the Strings (Koto, Biwa, Shamisen and
Kokyu ),Wind ( Fue, sakuhachi, Hichiriki, Sho ),Percussion ( Taiko drum and Tsuzumi ).

Peking Opera Theater, is a stylized Chinese form of opera dating from the late 1`8 th
century, in which speech, singing, mime and acrobatics are performed to an instrumental
accompaniment. It was regarded as one of the cultural treasures of china and was extremely
popular in the Qing Dynasty court. Basically, the Peking opera has two main styles of music,
namely: erh huang and his-p’l. These styles are very similar and the only difference is the key.
His-p’l has lower sound than the erh-huang. They also utilize the technique called fan-pan
which is commonly used for sorrowful songs, and is only sung by bearded characters.

Most music used in the Peking opera has been worked out collaboratively between
actors and musicians. Most are borrowed from already existing sources and recombined
according to the requirements of a particular play.

Peking opera Performances are accompanied by music usually played on three types of
instruments: Wind, string instruments and percussion instruments.

The following main instruments are Chinese in origin:

1. Jinghu - a two-stringed instrument played with a bow
2. Yeq`uin - a four-stringed instrument that is plucked
3. Sanxian - a three- stringed instrument which is also plucked
4. Variety of gongs and cymbals - creates rhythmic and graceful melodies.

The melodies played by the accompaniment fall mainly into three broad categories. The first is
the aria. The arias of Beijing opera can be further divided into those of the erhuang and xipi
varieties. An example of an aria is wawadiao, an aria in the xipi style that is sung by the young
Sheng to indicate heightened emotion. The Second type of melody heard in Beijing opera is
the fixed-tuned melody, or qupai. These instrumental tunes that serve a wider range of purposes
than arias. Examples include the “Water Dragon Tune” (shui long yin), which generally denotes
the arrival of an important person, and “Triple Thrust” (ji san qiang), which may signal a feast
or banquet. The final type of musical accompaniment is the percussion pattern. Such patterns
provide context to the music in ways similar to the fixed-tune melodies. For example, there are
as many as 48 different percussion patterns that accompany stage entrances. Each one identifies
the entering character by his or her individual rank and personality.

Wayang kulit in central Java is one of the oldest continuous traditions of storytelling in
the world which includes the use of puppet materials and background musical accompaniment
to make it interesting to the audience. Wayang is an Indonesian and Malay word for theater.
When the term is used to refer to kinds of Puppet Theater, sometimes the puppet itself is
referred to as wayang. Kulit means skin and refers to the leather construction of the puppets
that are carefully cut into a very fine tools and supported with carefully shaped buffalo horn
handles and control rods.
Wayang Kulit was performed in royal court and widely performed in public on religious
occasions so that knowledge of wayang became widespread among all classes in Java.
A Gamelan ensemble is comprised mainly by bronze percussion instruments augmented
by other percussion instruments, strings, and a flute. A full Javanese gamelan ensemble consists
of:

1. Saron - xylophone of heavy bronze bars

2. Gender - bronze xylophone with resonance chambers beneath
3. Bonang - set of bronze bowls
4. Gong and kempul - hanging gongs
5. Kenong and ketuk - single inverted bronze bowl
6. Gambang - wooded xylophone
7. Rebab - two-stringed fiddle
8. Suling - flute
9. Kendang - horizontal drum beat with the fingers on both ends
10. Tjelempung - a zither of thirteen double strings.

The preponderance of bronze instruments gives gamelan music a bright, lingering

sound, ranging from the slow, majestic melodies of the Javanese gamelan to the clangorous
vibrancy of the Balinese gamelan.

ASIAN MUSICAL THEATER

Background Information for the Learners (BIL)

Kabuki is a classical form of Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for its
heavily-stylised performances, the often-glamorous costumes worn by performers, and for the
elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.
Kabuki, like other forms of drama traditionally performed in Japan, was—and
sometimes still is—performed in full-day programmes, with one play comprising a number of
acts spanning the entire day. The structure of a full-day performance was derived largely from
the conventions of both Bunraku and Noh theatre. Chief amongst these was the concept of jo-
ha-kyū, a pacing convention in theatre stating that the action of a play should start slow, speed
up, and end quickly. The concept, elaborated on at length by master Noh playwright Zeami,
governs not only the actions of the actors, but also the structure of the play, as well as the
structure of scenes and plays within a day-long programme. Nearly every full-length play
occupies five acts. The first corresponds to jo, an auspicious and slow opening which introduces
the audience to the characters and the plot. The next three acts correspond to ha, where events
speed up, culminating almost always in a great moment of drama or tragedy in the third act,
and possibly a battle in the second or fourth acts. The final act, corresponding to kyū, is almost
always short, providing a quick and satisfying conclusion.

Wayang kulit is a traditional form of puppet-shadow play originally found in the

cultures of Java, Bali, and Lombok in Indonesia. In a wayang kulit performance, the puppet
figures are rear-projected on a taut linen screen with a coconut-oil (or electric) light.
The dalang (shadow artist) manipulates carved leather figures between the lamp and the screen
to bring the shadows to life. The narratives of wayang kulit often have to do with the major
theme of good vs. evil.
Wayang kulit is one of the many different forms of wayang theatre found in Indonesia; the
others include wayang beber, wayang klitik, wayang golek, wayang topeng, and wayang
wong. Wayang kulit is among the best known, offering a unique combination of ritual, lesson
and entertainment
The gamelan orchestra is an integral part of the Javanese wayang kulit performance. The
performance is accompanied by female singers (pesinden) and male singers (wirasuara).
Wayang shadow plays are usually tales from the two major Hindu epics,
the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The puppet master contextualizes stories from the plays,
making them relevant to current community, national or global issues. Gamelan players
respond to the direction of the dalang.

Peking opera is the most dominant form of Chinese opera which combines music, vocal
performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. Peking opera features four main role types, sheng
(gentlemen), dan (women), jing (rough men), and chou (clowns). Performing troupes often
have several of each variety, as well as numerous secondary and tertiary performers. With their
elaborate and colorful costumes, performers are the only focal points on Peking opera's
characteristically sparse stage. They use the skills of speech, song, dance and combat in
movements that are symbolic and suggestive, rather than realistic. Above all else, the skill of
performers is evaluated according to the beauty of their movements. Performers also adhere to

Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. 11

a variety of stylistic conventions that help audiences navigate the plot of the production. The
layers of meaning within each movement must be expressed in time with music. The music of
Peking opera can be divided into the xīpí (西皮) and èrhuáng (二黄) styles. Melodies include
arias, fixed-tune melodies and percussion patterns. The repertoire of Peking opera includes over
1,400 works, which are based on Chinese history, folklore and, increasingly, contemporary life.

IMPROVISATION OF SOUND, MUSIC, GESTURE, MOVEMENTS,
PROPS AND COSTUME FOR A MUSICAL THEATER
PERFORMANCE

Background Information for Learners:

Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theatre art that is performed in stylized manner which
combines acting, singing and dancing. The technique adapted from the chanting or joruri is
called nori. It implies a very sensitive capacity of riding the rhythms of shamisen (string
instrument), declaiming each accompaniment. Naugata music is very flexible, can be
performed by one shamisen or by entire orchestra of twenty musicians, of which ten are
shamisen players, while other play flute (fue taken from no) and drums (kotsuzumi-small drums,
otsuzumi-waist drum and taiko-stick drum)

Japan has also their own way of make-up pattern for their actors just like China. Kabuki
Makeup is a face painting of Japan which interprets the actors’ role through facial expression.

Wayang Kulit was performed in royal court and widely performed in public or religious
accassions so that knowledge of wayang became widespread among all classes in Java. A
gamelan ensemble is comprised mainly by bronze percussion instruments augmented by other
percussion instruments, strings, and a flute. Example of these instruments is gabang- a wooden
xylophone. The major dramatic function of gamelan music is to accompany stage action.

In the following activities, you will improvise sound, music and props appropriate to a
musical theater performance.

ASIAN MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE

Background Information for Learners

Live performance, featuring actors or puppets, native to Asia, a continent with more
than 2 billion people of many nations and cultures. Asian theatre typically combines
storytelling, dance, music and mime and incorporates mask, make up, scenery, costumes, props,
and scripts. In contrast to theatre in the West, the focus of Asian theatre is generally on
performance rather than on a specific text.

Asian theatre is not a unified entity. Difference among Asian countries in language,
culture, history, economics, politics, and religion have resulted in several hundred distinct
theatre genres, not all of which have been studied or catalogued. As elsewhere in the world,
theatre may function as entertainment, as confirmation of cultural or social unity, as religious,
political, or ethical education, or as a combination of these.

There is no one single form that makes up Asian theatre, but many different forms,
many unique to one area. Some of the examples of Asian theatres includes Sanskrit drama in
India, Beijing Opera in China, Kabuki, Bunraku and Nōh drama in Japan. In Japan, there are
three important theatrical forms: Bunraku, Kabuki and Nōh.

The following activities will help you imitate some of the Asian musical theater scenes.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

EVALUATING MUSIC AND MUSICAL PERFORMANCES
(Traditional Asian Theater Music)

Background Information for Learners

Theatre Arts is one of the ancient traditions of the people in Asia particularly in Japan
and China. This theater art form was transmitted from generation to generation. It mirrors or
reflects life. Its key principle of theater is selectivity. Through the various forms of theater art,
a specific form can achieve clarity, order and beauty rarely found in ordinary life. Asian
theater music typically combines storytelling, dance, music, and mime and incorporates
masks, makeup, scenery, costumes, props, and scripts. In contrast to theater in the West, the
focus of Asian theater is generally on performance rather than on a specific text.

In Chinese Opera, Peking Opera is a form of Chinese Traditional Theater which

combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. It arose in the late 18th
century and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. Music is very
important to Peking Opera. Certain story types are accompanied by specific types of music,
which may include arias, percussion patterns, and fixed tune melodies. Fixed-tune
melodies are familiar melodies to which a composer adds new words for a specific opera or
story. The vocal requirements for all of the major roles were greatly reduced for Peking opera.
The Chou, in particular, rarely has a singing part in Peking opera, unlike the equivalent role in
Kunqu style. The melodies that accompany each play were also simplified, and are played with
different traditional instruments than in earlier forms. The popularity of Peking opera has been
attributed to the simplicity of the form, with only a few voices and singing patterns. This
allowed anyone to sing the arias themselves.

In Kabuki Theater of Japan, it is a form of classical theater in Japan known for its
elaborate costumes and dynamic acting. The phrases Kabuki theater, kabuki dance,
or kabuki play are sometimes used in political discourse to describe an event characterized
more by showmanship than by content. Kabuki theatre (歌舞伎) features highly-
stylized dancing, singing and elaborate make-up worn by a predominately all-male cast.
Musically, it highlights the Nagauta form (often associated with shamisen).

In Wayang Kulit, an Indonesian form of shadow puppetry, holds the audience's

attention with riveting storylines executed masterfully by the dhalang, or puppeteer. Wayang
kulit is accompanied by the music of the gamelan. Gamelan ais n Indonesian orchestra made
up especially of percussion instruments (such as gongs, xylophones, and drums). In addition to
setting the mood or atmosphere of a play, music has two major dramatic functions in the theatre.
It accompanies the singing/chanting and it accompanies stage actions including dance
