OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD

Background Information for Learners


The term Classical denotes conformity with the principles and characteristics of
ancient Greek and Roman literature and art which were formal, elegant, simple, freed and
dignified. The same characteristics may also describe the melodies of classical music.
Harmony and texture is homophonic in general. The dynamics of loud and soft was clearly
shown through the extensive use of crescendo and diminuendo. A style of broken chord
accompaniment called Alberto Bass was practiced.
The following are the elements of Music with each description and definition.
• Melody is a combination of pitch and rhythm. In music, the aesthetic product of a
given succession of pitches in musical time, implying rhythmically ordered movement
from pitch to pitch.
• Tempo is the speed at which a passage of music is or should be played.
(slow, moderate and fast). The rate of speed of a musical piece or passage indicated
by one of a series of directions (such as largo, presto, or allegro) and often by an exact
metronome marking.
• Dynamics refers to the volume of a sound or tone. Dynamics means how quietly or
loudly a piece of music should be played. It is an important way of conveying the
mood of a piece and the use of dynamics is a marked element of your performance.
• Texture is homophonic in melody accompanied by chord. It is how the tempo,
melodic and harmonic materials are combined in a composition, thus determining the
overall quality of the sound in a piece.
• Pitch is the rate of vibrations producing it, the degree of highness or lowness of a
tone. The pitch of the note means how high or low the note is.

• Sonata is a multi-movement work usually in slow tempo and mostly lyrical
and emotional. Example is the Third movement of Sonata in d minor for

Opera- a drama set to music
Opera buffa/ Opera comique - opera in Italy that is full of fun
- an opera with humorous plot and usually with a happy ending
Opera Seria/Serious opera- usually implies heroic or tragic drama that employs
mythological characters

COMPOSERS AND THEIR COMPOSITIONS

Background Information for Learners


Franz Joseph Haydn is one of the most prominent composers of the classical period.
His life is described as a “rags-to-riches” story. He was named, “Father of the Symphony”.
His famous works include 104 symphonies, 60 piano sonatas, 68 string quartets, some masses
and oratorios and 25 operas (10 lost). Most of his symphonies have nicknames such as the
“Surprise Symphony”, “The Clock”, “The Military”. He also wrote chamber piano music and
choral works.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a child prodigy and the most amazing genius in musical
history. He experimented in all kinds of music and composed over 700 works. He composed
wonderful concertos, symphonies and opera such as “The Marriage of Figaro” (1786), “Don
Giovanni (1789), and “The Magic Flute” which became popular. Other known works: Eine
Kleine Nachtmusik, Symphony No. 40 in G Major, and Sonata No. 11 in A Major K311.
Ludwig Van Beethoven was the composer who bridged the late Classical era and the
early Romantic era. He was a talented pianist and composer. His famous compositions include
32 piano sonatas, 21 set of variations, 9 symphonies, 5 concertos for piano, 16 string quartets
and choral music.
His works include the Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor ,“Missa Solemnis” (1818-
1823) and opera “Fidelio” (1805). His known symphonies are: Symphony No. 3 (Eroica),
No. 5, No. 6 (Pastoral), No. 9 (Choral), which adds voices to the orchestra.

MUSIC OF THE CLASSICAL PERIOD

Background Information for Learners


In the middle of the 18th century, Europe began to move toward a new style
in architecture, literature, and the arts, known as Classicism. It was also pushed
forward by changes in the economic order and in social structure. In Classical music
era, Minuet was frequently used as a third movement in four movement non-vocal works.
Works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are still popular today. Their compositions
are now commonly used as music to animated series of popular cartoon companies such as
Looney Toons, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Pixar, etc. Beethoven’s music was used in
one of the films for children. “Little Einstein’s” animated series also features the music of the
great composers Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart.

Background Information for Learners


Improvisation of appropriate accompaniment in music is the act of creating and
playing new music without preparing it in advance. It involves creatively using the available
resources at hand, such as musical instruments and your listening skills to compose music
spontaneously.
There are number of ways people approach improvising music. However, the
most important thing to know is that improvisation is not a magic gift and it is not necessarily
an advance musical skill. Did you know that in some music schools, young children are taught
to improvise as soon as they start learning music?
