In this learning activity sheet, you will find different activities where you can
learn and show your understanding of the basic concepts and principles of Southeast
Asian music. You will also discover how people from the Southeast Asian countries
express their feelings towards each other, towards the environment, and their history
and beliefs through vocal or instrumental music.
VOCABULARY LIST
Slendro – The older of the two musical scales (Lara’s) used in Indonesian Music. It is
a pentatonic scale without half steps which is commonly referred to as the
“Male” tonal System.
Peloq – In Javanese the term is said to be a variant of the word pelag meaning "fine"
or "beautiful". Pelog is a seven-tone scale (Heptatonic Scale)
Irama – an Indonesian term for tempo
Form – the structure of a musical composition; way of a vibrating stretched membrane
Meter – the pattern of beats combined to form musical rhythm
Tempo – the speed or pace of a given piece.
Texture – the effect of the different components of a piece of music such as melody,
harmony rhythm, or the use of different instruments.
Timbre – the quality or color of tone of an instrument or voice

Tonality - the relationship between the notes and chords of a passage or work that
tends to establish a central note or harmony as its focal point.
FACTS ABOUT THE MUSIC OF INDONESIA
There are two (2) Basic Kinds of Indonesian Music Scale:
SLENDRO – The older of the two musical scales (Lara’s) used in Indonesian
Music.
It is a pentatonic scale without half steps which is commonly referred to as the
“Male”
tonal System.
• Both vocal and instrumental music in Indonesia use slendro and peloq scales.
• Polyphonic stratification kind of melody is a result of hocket/Interlock.
• Interlocking is a common technique used in gong ensembles.
• IRAMA – is an Indonesian term for tempo

In this activity, you are going to fill out the concept map below. At the
center, paste images of flags of Cambodia and Indonesia. Cut out pictures about the
music of the two countries such as instruments being used or anything about their
music. Copy the concept map on your notebook. Paste the pictures inside the circles
surrounding the flag.
