IN THE FAST FRANCHISE
Fun fact: 12,000-plus cars were used in the series (including background cars), with an
estimated 2,500 cars destroyed. That’s one car wrecked for about every 49 seconds of film!
Here’s four of the most ridiculous scenes of car-nage:

The plane takedown

Hurtling down perhaps the longest runway in the world, the
team prevents an Antonov 124 cargo plane from taking off
by tethering their cars to the aircraft, before Dom drives out
of its nose as it explodes. In real life, the scene’s duration and
vehicles’ average speed would mean that the runway would
have to be 42km long.

The Etihad Towers jump

“Cars don’t fly” – but Dom and Brian leapfrog a Lykan
HyperSport (only seven units were ever produced) across
three skyscrapers in Abu Dhabi. In reality, a stunt driver drove

The jungle run

Dom and Jakob face off in the jungles of Central America
(the scene was actually shot in Thailand) in a Dodge Charger
and Ford Mustang respectively, racing across a minefield and
culminating in a “Tarzan rope swing” from one cliff to another.
The explosives were real, but the cars were fitted with steel
plates on the undercarriage to protect the drivers. The cliff
jump was filmed at a quarry, while clever framing and a little
CGI made Dom’s “bungee jump” possible.

The Armadillo flip

At the climax of F9 in Tbilisi, Dom and friends have to stop the
Armadillo, perhaps the largest custom-built vehicle created
for the screen. Two units of this three-sectioned armoured
behemoth were built for the movie – one was driven upright,
and the other when it was flipped onto its back. Measuring
4m high and weighing 23,587 kg each, they took the film’s
engineers four months to build. They nicknamed it, quite aptly,
“The Mother Trucker”.

companion to box office success: according
to Guinness World Records, the films Zimmer
has scored for have earned over US$27 billion
worldwide, with an impressive average of
US$280 million per film.
What’s more impressive beyond the box office
successes of the films he has worked on, is this:
In a field crowded by big names such as the
legendary John Williams, Danny Elfman, Alan
Silvestri, and Ramin Djawadi, Zimmer might
well be the most influential film composer of
recent times. Consider, for instance, his impact
on the musical grammar of contemporary
action movie trailers. How often has a trailer for
a new Hollywood blockbuster started with a
series of serene shots accompanied by gentle
tinkling piano, suggesting an uneasy state of
peace, only to be disrupted by booming bass
or a subterranean blast of brass horns – that

Inception score: “[...] I put a piano in the middle
of a church and I put a book on the pedal, and
these brass players would basically play into
the resonance of the piano. And then I added
a bit of electronic nonsense. But really, it just
came from saying, ‘Let’s experiment.’”
What distinguishes Zimmer from his
predecessors? It’s arguably his preference
for minimalism regarding melody, coupled
with his willingness to aggressively innovate.
He has a gift for using newfangled recording
techniques and sampling practices to come
up with unusual sounds that capture the
emotive atmosphere of a film. 2013’s Man
of Steel, scored by Zimmer and starring
Henry Cavill as Superman, is the clearest
example of this difference in approach. While
John Williams’ original Superman theme

the traditional, rousing patterns of a heroic

of a film might be why Zimmer’s creative
marriage to frequent collaborator Christopher
Nolan (with whom he has worked with both
on Inception as well as on the Batman trilogy)
has flourished over the years. In another
interview with Indiewire, Zimmer explained
how both Nolan and himself took great pains
to communicate the emotions of the films to
their musical collaborators: “[...] We actually sit
at eye-level with the musicians, and we talk to
them about subtext. [...] at the end of the day if
you just write middle C onto a page, it means
nothing if you don’t give it context. [...] we tell
them the subtext, where these notes fit into
the tapestry of this film.”
That preference to serve the story has often
meant that Zimmer’s compositions occupy
the background rather than the foreground

subconsciously rather than consciously. On

The teaser trailer for Marvel’s upcoming

FROM STAGE TO SCREEN

We look at two other notable film adaptations of popular
musical theatre productions
CHICAGO
This adaptation of Kander and Ebb’s
musical is star-studded, glamorous, and
spirited. A satire about celebrity and
notoriety set in Jazz Age Chicago, the
movie centres on the rivalry between
housewife Roxie Hart (Renée Zellweger)
and showgirl Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-
Jones), both accused of murder. Also
starring Richard Gere and Queen Latifah,
the film won six awards at the 2003 Oscars,
including Best Picture.

Les Misérables
This period epic based on Victor Hugo’s
novel arrived on the big screen in dramatic
fashion, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell
Crowe, and Anne Hathaway. The movie
attracted critical acclaim, but also drew
criticism from fans of the show because
the singing was performed live on the
set instead of recorded separately, as is
customary with movie musicals.

LOOKING FOR LOVE

The anthology romantic comedy series, Love
Life, follows a millennial New Yorker’s quest
to find The One, with each episode telling
the winding, relatable story of a potential
suitor that slipped away from her. Sure, the
story of a young person seeking romance in
the city isn’t a new premise for a movie or
TV show, but Love Life stands out from its
peers with its secret weapon: Anna Kendrick,
who brings warmth, sweetness, and lots
and lots of charm to the show. She plays
the protagonist Darby, a character who has
struggled to make romantic connections
throughout her adolescence and college
days, with goofy and quirky appeal. The series
tracks her across her 20s as she navigates
work and romance, and introduces us to the
emotional pillars of her life: her impulsive
best friend Sara (Zoë Chao) and her brutally
honest friend Mallory (Sasha Compère), both
of whom have seen Darby through some of
her failed romantic adventures when she was
younger. But things may be turning around
for Darby. Early on in the
series, she finally falls in WATCH
(requited) love. Will it lead Love Life
to a happily ever after? Will Darby (Anna Kendrick) find love?

THE DRIVE TO AUTOMATE

Spare yourself the headache of a peak-hour drive
to and from work and read a book, watch a movie,
or get some much-needed shut-eye instead. That,
in a nutshell, is the appeal of a self-driving car,
notwithstanding the possibilities it holds for providing
accessible transportation to the elderly or disabled.
But riding a self-driving car also means forgoing the
satisfaction of being in the driver’s seat, of feeling
the weight of physics and the rush of speed while
navigating a car to your own whims. Alex Horwitz’s
documentary, Autonomy, examines the pros and
cons of automated cars in an objective fashion, and
suggests that the advent of these technological
marvels marks a significant cultural and economic
turning point. Acclaimed author Malcolm Gladwell
leads the feature documentary, and he brings an
untameable curiosity to the show while exploring the
emerging technology of self-driving vehicles.

A TALENTED
SOUL
LISTEN
Back to Black

Despite only having two

studio albums to her name,
the late Amy Winehouse
has an left an indelible
mark on soul and jazz music
A great deal of discussion that followed in
the aftermath of Amy Winehouse’s death in
2011 revolved around her real-life issues: her
eating disorder, her manic depression, her
drug and drinking addictions. Her emotional
and mental struggles, which heavily inspired
the songs on her 2006 hit sophomore album,
Back to Black, are often raised when people
talk about her premature death as “inevitable”
or “unsurprising”. Those comments aren’t
completely baseless here; after all, the fatalism
that animates songs such as “You Know I’m
No Good”, “Love is a Losing Game”, and “Back
to Black”, seems inextricable from her brand
of music. It’s almost as if Winehouse, who died
from alcohol poisoning, believed that it was
her pain and problems that gave her songs
beauty and gravitas.
Back then, what got mentioned less often
compared to Winehouse’s various personal
struggles were her tremendous talent and the
powerful impact she made on music in the
2000s. She might not have been the octave-
jumper like some of her more big-voiced
soul-singer peers were, but she had a rich and
expressive contralto, which was able to lend
emotion and depth to even the simplest lines.
She also had weird and distinctive phrasings
that were inimitable. And most of all, she
paved the way for a new breed of soul singers
to break into UK’s pop landscape. Without
Winehouse, and without Back to Black, there
would not have been a Duffy or an Adele.
She may no longer be around physically, but
her influence on UK’s pop and soul music

landscape today still remains.

FROM INDIE ROOTS

Arcade Fire is perhaps the biggest example
of an indie band breaking through into the
mainstream music landscape. Back in 2011,
the Canadian band did something no one was
expecting: score a Grammy award for Album of
the Year. Indie artistes are seldom recognised
at the Grammys (except in the Best Alternative
Music Album category, which Arcade Fire
was nominated for in 2006 and 2008), so an
under-the-radar band winning a prestigious
award like Album of the Year? That’s as rare as
winning the lottery. And maybe it really was
the lottery to Arcade Fire, because it boosted
their profile dramatically. Before that, they
were most celebrated on indie music sites,
but were hardly heard on mainstream radio.
In fact, according to The Ringer, a Tumblr blog
titled “Who is Arcade Fire??!!?” even sprung up
after the 2011 Grammys, and celebrities such as
Rosie O’Donnell admitted to their cluelessness
about Arcade Fire’s existence. Still, the more pop-inspired direction, and is heavily

POPULAR ARTIST SPOTLIGHT – Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey, a.k.a. Elizabeth Woolridge
Grant, has always trafficked in a certain
nostalgic fatalism that’s reminiscent of artists
such as Billie Holiday and Amy Winehouse.
That fatalism, coupled with her sometimes
stubbornly politically incorrect views – many
have accused her of harbouring old-fashioned
gender views – have caused music observers
to label her as problematic.
Additionally, when she first burst onto the
scene in 2011 off the back of singles such as
“Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” (from Born
to Die), critical attention zoomed in on the
often explicit mentions of sex and drug use
that pervaded her lyrics, and the coquettish
trouble-child persona she’d adopted soon
became the subject of feminist ire.

© Justin Higuchi

That focus on the content of her lyrics has

often overshadowed Del Rey’s gifts as a
singer-songwriter: her Springsteen-esque
eye for novelistic details, the vocal ease with
which she inhabits her characters, her careful
sense of irony, and her ability to supplement
storytelling with inspired instrumentation
that conjure an atmosphere of glamorous
excess. In recent years, the singer has pared
back her mildly controversial persona,
and that move has helped foreground
her emotional vulnerability and talent for
romanticising Americana.
