1. Pre-K/CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standard
• VA.K2.3.1 Identify selected elements of design and principles of design in nature and in works of art. • VA.K2.3.2 Use elements and principles of design to create works of art. • VA.K3.3.2 Create artwork that demonstrates choice of subject matter and symbols to communicate meaning.
2. Objectives (What will children expect to learn?)
• Students will be able to classify beautiful colors and elements seen in nature by going on a nature walk and having a group discussion with 90% accuracy. • Students will design their own tissue paper painting of nature after the nature walk and craft explanation/demonstration from the teacher with 95% accuracy.
3. Materials and Equipment needed:
• Watercolor panels or white cardstock could work too, white crayons, small square tissue papers, spray bottles with water 4. Teaching (What will you do?) a. Introduce: Present the book, “The Crayon Man.” Connect the students’ prior knowledge to crayons, and tell them the book is about the man who invented the Crayola crayons! b. Read: Teacher reads the book to the class. As you read point out how much Edwin loved color, nature, and helping people. c. Discuss: After you read the book have a class discussion about the book. Discuss how color can make us happy just as it made Edwin happy. d. Activities: • Take students on a nature walk, before the walk, tell students to look out for colors and things in nature that make them feel happy. • Back in the classroom have a group discussion about the different colors and the things in nature they saw that made them happy. Discuss how different colors can make us feel different ways. • Sit down the students with the supplies needed and explain/demonstrate what they will be doing • Each student will have their own watercolor panel or white cardstock • Students will use their white crayon to draw what made them happy on their nature walk • Students will spray water onto their panels and place the colored tissue papers covering the entire panel • When they have finished placing the tissue paper down, have the students spray water all over the tissue paper, and then leave to dry. • Later or the next day have students take off their tissue paper to reveal their beautiful tissue paper paintings 5. Closure: • Teacher reviews each tissue paper painting to check the accuracy of the students’ ability to design a work of art using elements and principles. Teacher will check the accuracy of the students’ understanding of how different colors can make us feel different ways during the group discussion.
