Introduction

My next report for the subject CKV is about The big bang theory. I had to think
about a new subject but I couldn’t find one. In de lesson we were talking about the
comedy The Big bang theory, suddenly I thought this would be my subject. So I went
to my teacher and I asked for permission to do this subject for my next CKV report
and he thought it was okay. The Big Bang theory is an American sitcom which is
created by the directors Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady. Steve Molaro is also one of the
head writers of the sitcom the big bang theory. The sitcom is premièred on the
twenty-fourth of September 2007 on television.
This sitcom is a comedy about five people who
spend most of their time in the same building
with each other. They are like friends for life and
together they experience the most crazy things.

3
The main idea of the comedy.

The most important people in the sitcom are the two room-mates who live together
on the first floor. Across their apartment lives a girl named Penny, she is a good
friend of theirs. When the friends saw their new neighbor across, they were
spontaneous love with Penny.
The two room-mates have two more friends, they don't live together in the same
building, but they visit every day, so you can find those two also in the building all
day long. The four friends are like 'The Four Musketeers'. The four friends know each
other of a science fair, they were there when they were little boys and they were
surprised of each other’s knowledge about science. That is how their friendship
started.

The two room-mates are geniuses who experiment a lot. Everybody think that they
are the biggest nerds they have ever seen. They are called Sheldon Cooper and
Leonard Hofstadter. The girl across their apartment is Penny, she is an attractive
blonde waitress and she is friends with the two nerds. Penny first was a bit afraid of
the two nerds because they know everything and they have an answer to every
question, but later on, she started getting used to those nerds and she got t know
them better. The two other friends are Howard Wolowitz and Rajesh Koothrappali.
Those two are also geniuses who experiment a lot. Also they know everything and
they have an answer to every question. The four friends know each other of a science
fair. The four nerds, share a lot of knowledge and interests. They never ever had a
girlfriend, they don’t even dare to talk to any other girls besides Penny.

A lot of people watch this comedy show, because the protagonists are the most
funny nerd ever. They have a lot of funny comments in the show and it can be very
hilarious.
Actually the main idea of the comedy is to make people laugh, that is why it is called
a comedy. The actors who play those gigantic nerds are not that wise in real life, so
you can imagine that this comedy show costs a lot of time and has a lot of great
actors. With this comedy/sitcom, the directors and the actors especially want to make
the audience laugh, but secretly they also want to teach them a bit, that is what the
directors told in an interview in a daily show.

4
The actors.

The character of Leonard Hofstader is acted by the actor Johnny Galecki. Leonard
Hofstader is an experimental physicist who loves to invite and
experiment with new things, with an IQ of 173. He shares an
apartment with his colleague and friend Sheldon Cooper. The
writers of the sitcom, had from the beginning already the idea
to let Leonard and Penny fall in love in the future of the
comedy.

The character of Sheldon Cooper is acted by the actor Jim

Parsons. Sheldon Cooper was ooriginally born in East Texas, he
was a child with exceptional talents or powers who began college at the age of 11 after
he completed the fifth grade. He started graduate studies at the age
of 14. He has an IQ of 187. He shows a strict behavior of a lack of
understanding of irony, sarcasm, and humor; he is also uninterested
in many of the romantic buffoonery between Leonard, Howard, and
Raj. These characteristics are the main sources of his humor and the
basis of a number of episodes. Sheldon Cooper shares an apartment
with Leonard Hofstadter, across the hall from Penny.

The character of Penny is acted by the actrice Kaley Cuoco. She is

the blonde, "born and raised in Omaha Nebraska”, who lives across the hall from
Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstader. She hopes for a career
in acting, and has been to casting calls and auditions but has
not been successful so far. To pay the bills, she is a waitress at
The Cheesecake Factory. To date, she did not wanted to tell her
last name. During the fourth season, Kaley Cuoco broke her leg
in a horse-riding accident. When she returned to the show, after
missing two episodes, she was shown working as a bartender at
the same café, at the Cheesecake Factory, instead of in her
normal employment as a waitress.

The character of Howard Wolowitz is acted by the actor Simon

Helberg. He works as an aerospace engineer. He is jewish and lives with his mother.
His father left when he was 11 years old, and, to date, he
has never known why. He provides outrageous pick-up lines
and he sees himself as a lady’s man with suitably
unimpressed reactions from Penny; however, he has shown
he has totally no experience and success with other women.
He and Bernadette Rotsenkowsi are engaged in the sitcom,
further in season four.

5
The character of Rajesh Koothrappali is acted by the actor Kunal Nayyar. Rajesh, who
originally comes from New Delhi in India, works as a particle astrophysicist at Caltech.
He is very shy around women and is physically unable to talk
with them, unless he drinks alcohol or unless he thinks he has
been drinking alcohol. However, he has had much better luck
with women than his overly confident best friend Howard. His
parents, Dr. and Mrs. V.M. Koothrappali, are seen via webcam. In
the third season, he works for Sheldon because his research has
run into a dead-end and he does not want to return to India.

The character of Leslie Winkle is acted by the actrice Sara Gilbert

(recurring seasons 1 & 3, occasionally starring season 2) Leslie is an experimental
physicist who has casual sex with both Howard and Leonard during the show's airing.
She does not get along well with Sheldon and frequently mocks him. Gilbert was
promoted to main cast during the second season, but demoted again once the
writers realized they could not produce quality material for her for every episode.

The character of Bernadette Rostenkowski is acted by the actrice Melissa Rauch

(recurring season 3, occasionally starring season 4) She is a waitress and co-worker of
Penny paying her way through graduate school microbiology studies. Bernadette is
introduced to Howard by Penny. At first she and Howard do not get along, as they
appear to have nothing in common. When they find out that they both have
overbearing mothers, they feel a connection. They are now engaged.

The character of Amy Farrah Fowler is acted by the actrice Mayim Bialik (guest
season 3, recurring and occasionally starring season 4) She is a woman who Raj and
Howard meet on an online dating site using a faux account for Sheldon. She is almost
a copy of Sheldon but then in a female version, she and Sheldon become friends
although - as Sheldon claims - she is a girl and his friend, but she is not his
"girlfriend”

6
Figuration and content.

The situations in the sitcom are most of the time in the apartment itself. Loads of
things the friends experience happens in the apartment of Penny, Sheldon and
Leonard. But also outside, in the home of Howard, in the comic bookshop and in the
cafeteria of their work. The protagonists are dressed like nerds, they were non fashion
clothing, that’s because they represent nerds. Accept for Penny, she plays a sexy
blond waitress, she dresses like a normal girl would do. The clothing and the
locations do have something to do with the atmosphere in the sitcom. During the
sitcom, you hear music of course, but most of the time, the music is for the
background. When something exiting happens, you do hear some sounds which
makes it more exiting. There is almost no sign of special sound effects, of course
there is sometimes a partially sound to express some moments better. The sitcom is
written in a logically way, and it is very easy to follow, without seeing other episodes,
you still get where it’s all about. The episode I still remember very good, is when the
four nerd were invited to the Halloween party of Penny, in that episode, they acted
like fools because they did not knew how a party was like, they never had been to a
Halloween party before. This is definitely a comedy.
A small summary of this sitcom can be that, the 5 friends in the sitcom experience all
kind of thing together. They fall in love, deal with each other’s problems, but
especially the enjoy being friends. This is also which conflicts are going on in the
sitcom most of the time. The protagonists are Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, Rajesh and
Penny. What the boys share is that they all have a big knowledge and that they are all
nerds. The girl is a sexy blond waitress which is still happy being friends with those
nerds. The relationship between them is that they are friends forever. The
protagonists are not just normal people, well that is what I think, I never have seen
such nerds like in this sitcom. the one in whom I can move me the most is Penny,
because she has to deal with those gigantic nerds.

7
Function and conclusion.

The function of the sitcom is to amuse the watchers, but because the personages are
so clever, they maybe also want to teach the watchers something new about science.
The directors did not specific used things to keep the attention of the audience, they
use the talents of the actors.

I think that the sitcom is very hilarious. When I saw it for the first time, I thought what
is this for stupid nerd program, but after watching it a couple times more, it striated
to captivate me. I think it’s that hilarious because the people who play in it are so
clever that is becomes funny, some comments don’t make any sense, and some are
useless. It makes me laugh and that is always good.
