OZAMIZ CITY NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Pursuant to DepEd Memorandum No. 173, s. 2019, Ozamiz City National High
School, through the Languages Department, officially launched the Brigada Pagbasa
in the New Normal last August 16, 2021 via Facebook live through the Ozamiz City
National High School official Facebook page.
Brigada Pagbasa in the New Normal, aimed to bring together education
partners and experts to help all learners read and become functionally literate and to
synergize efforts and resources to address education- related challenges in the new
normal. Moreover, this program would also deepen other reading programs of the
region - Care for NorMin Readers (CNR), the division - Reading Interventions for
Development and Enhancement (RIDE) and Kritikal na Pag-iisip Linangin at
Payabungin (KISLAP), and the school-initiated reading programs like Project IRA
among others.
Parents, teachers and learners attended the said online launching as they
showed their strong support to this Initiative. General PTA officers, barangay officials
and other stakeholders came to work hand-in-hand with the school leaders to ensure
the success of this endeavor. The program started at 1:00 in the afternoon with the
different presentations that promoted the love for reading to all students of the
school. In her opening words, Mrs. Lilibeth Y. Abamonga, school principal, expressed
her deep gratitude to the parents for answering to school’s call. She added that
parental support plays a very vital role in order for the school to achieve the vision,
vision, thrusts and programs of the Department of Education, specifically, in OCNHS.
The program highlighted the different summer reading programs as an off
shoot of Brigada Eskwela. Books on Wheels, Books and Bikers, Meet Greet and
Read, Read O’clock are some of the reading initiative that the school aimed to
implement this school year. Learners’ performances for the last National Reading
Month celebration were showcased. Poem writing competition for Grades 7 and 8,

TV Broadcasting for Grades 9 and 10, Character Portrayal for Grade 11 and Spoken
Poetry for Grade 12 did not only exhibit their different skills but more so showcased
the various ways of making reading much more fun.
Just like any other DepEd program, a very strong partnership between
external and internal stakeholders of the school is necessary in order to accomplish
the purpose of this initiative. With the enormous support coming from the parents,
LGU officials, government agencies, non-government organizations and the learners
which was evident during the launching activity, the reading interventions and
activities of the school surely have a bright future ahead. Everyone is truly
committed towards ensuring that every OCNHS learner is a not only a proficient
reader but also a lifelong learner.
