Exercise No. 7
NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY

OBJECTIVES:

1. To write the equations of chemical for radioactive decay.

2. To calculate the energy released by the fusion process

DISCUSSION:

Summary of Nuclear Radiation

The table below summarizes the main types of nuclear radiation, including charge,
mass, symbol, and penetrating power. Penetrating power refers to the relative ability of
the radiation to pass through common materials. Radiation with high penetrating power
is potentially more dangerous because it can pass through skin and do cellular damage.

Type Symbol Mass number Charge

Alpha particle 24He or αα 4 2+2+
Beta particle e−10 or ββ 0 1−1−
Positron e10 or β+β+ 0 1+1+
Gamma ray γγ or 00γ00γ 0 0
Neutron n01n01 1 0

Radioactive decay, a reaction in which a nucleus spontaneously disintegrates into a

slightly lighter nucleus, accompanied by the emission of particles, energy, or both .
