A. Introduction 60 minutes You are in the second week of learning Practical Research 2. You already learned
Panimula the nature that humans are always asking questions and testing theories about
themselves, about other people and even about what is going on around them.
Indeed, humans are good researchers.
In this lesson, you will learn about the nature of inquiry and research. Specifically,
you are expected to Illustrate the importance of quantitative research across fields.
At the beginning of COVID19 pandemic in the Philippines, the scientists from
University of the Philippines became an active partner in providing
recommendations to the InterAgency Task Force, the core agency assigned in
managing the health emergency crisis in the Philippines, based on their predictions
and research. The quarantine measures implemented by the LGUs were always
based from the policy reports of the research team. Last September 2, 2020, UP Team
predicted the coronavirus tally in the Philippines could average at around 585,000
before the year ends, based on a forecast by researchers from the University of the
Philippines (UP). The UP COVID-19 Pandemic Response Team on Wednesday
updated its coronavirus dashboard to extend projections to cover up to Dec. 31 this
year. The team indicated that the year-end COVID-19 figures could still go down to
around 402,000 detected cases. But it could also reach as high as 767,000,
depending on different factors that may affect viral transmission, detection of cases,
and data reporting in the next four months.

For the next months, how will reliance to research community help national and
local government units in responding to emergency issues?

Quantitative research uses numbers in stating generalizations about a given
problem or inquiry in contrast to qualitative research. The involvement of scientific
methods in gathering data and analyzing them to produce generalization is needed
with this approach. Therefore, any interaction established with a certain group of
people can be generalized (May & Williams, 1998). One of the benefits we could get
from this approach is the replicability. The hypothesis testing allows any researcher to
follow the guidelines and objectives of the research (Lichtman, 2013). Control groups
allow researchers to assign participants in sub-groups and control their interventions
(Johnson and Christensen, 2012).

IMPORTANCE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH ACROSS FIELDS

People do research to find solutions, even tentative ones, to problems, in order to
improve or enhance ways of doing things, to disprove or provide a new hypothesis, or
simply to find answers to questions or solutions to problems in daily life. Research findings
can affect people’s lives, ways of doing things, laws, rules and regulations, as well as
policies, among others. Widely, quantitative research is often used because of its
emphasis on proof rather than discovery.
In recent times, research studies are gaining an unprecedented focus and
attention. Then, only the faculty in higher education has so much interest and conduct
researchers, but now even the teachers in the basic education are engrossed in
researches and devote time and effort in conducting researches to improve
educational practices that may lead to more quality learning of the students. Many
teachers do action researches because there is a serious need to identify the problems
of the deteriorating quality of education. By doing so, they can address systematically
and make educational decisions regarding the problems met. Innovative teaching
strategies are product of research.
In the natural and social sciences, quantitative research is the systematic, empirical
investigation of observable phenomena via statistical, mathematical or
computational techniques. The objective of quantitative research is to develop and
employ mathematical models, theories and/or hypotheses pertaining to phenomena.
The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides
the fundamental connection between empirical observation and mathematical
expression of quantitative relationships.
Health Sciences (Medical Technology, Dentistry, Nursing, Medicine, etc.) use
quantitative research designs like descriptive, pre-experimental, quasi-experimental,
true-experiment, case study, among others.
