The key takeaways are that regenerative braking converts kinetic energy lost during braking into electrical energy that can be stored and reused, improving fuel efficiency compared to conventional braking systems which waste this energy as heat.

The main components of a regenerative braking system are a wheel, DC motor, shaft, roller bearings, battery, and brake drum.

When braking, the motor acts as a generator to convert the kinetic energy of rotation into electrical energy that is used to charge the battery. This recovers energy that would otherwise be lost as heat during braking.

INTRODUCTION
✔ Braking method in which the mechanical energy from the load is converted
into electric energy and regenerated back into the line is known as
Regenerative Braking.

✔ Energy is lost in the form of heat in Conventional Braking System

✔ The kinetic energy of the vehicle is stored temporarily, as an accumulative

energy, during deceleration, and is reused as kinetic energy during
acceleration or running.

✔ Additionally an Indication system is used to detect the failure of Regenerative

Braking.

NEED OF REGENERATIVE
BREAKING:
● Regenerative braking have the potential to improve
the fuel economy of Vehicles.
● The price increase of petrol based fuels give rise to
various research and development efforts in energy
conservation.
● Refuses the emission of vehicles.
● Improves Fuel Consumption
PRINCIPLE:
1. LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY states that the
total energy of an isolated system cannot change it is
said to be conserved over time.Energy can neither be
created nor be destroyed, but can change form.
2. The most common form of regenerative brake involves
using an electric motor as an electric generator. The
generated electricity is fed back into the supply system,
where as in battery electric and hybrid electric vehicles,
the energy is stored chemically in a battery.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
WORKING PRINCIPLE

✔ Vehicles driven by electric motors use the motor as a generator when using
regenerative braking.
✔ The roller rotates when the accelerator pedal is released.

✔ The roller then converts mechanical motion to electrical energy.

✔ This electrical energy is used to charge the battery.

✔ As long as the system is decelerated, the system produces electrical energy.

APPLICATIONS:
● For recovering Kinetic energy of vehicle lost during
braking process.
● Used in some elevators and crane hoist motors.
● One theoretical application of regenerative braking
would be in a manufacturing plant that moves
material from one workstation to another on a
conveyor system that stops at each point.
ADVANTAGES:
● Increase of overall energy efficiency of a vehicle.
● Improved Performance
● Emission Reduction
● Reduction in Engine wear
● Cuts down pollution
● Increase lifespan of friction braking systems.
● Smaller Accessories
● Less use of traditional mechanical brakes leads to less wera
overtime.
DISADVANTAGES:
● Added Extra components can increase weight.
● Complexity depends on control necessary for operation of
regenerative braking system.
● Cost of components, engineering, manufacturing and
installation is high.
CONCLUSION:
● The important thing about regenerative braking is that it may
be able to capture as much as half of wasted energy and put it
back to work.
● This is an effective method of improving vehicle efficiency and
longevity.
● Its already used in many EVs.
● The technology is well worth it.
● Reduces fuel consumption by 10 to 25%.
