FUEL CELL

VEHICLES
INTRODUCTION

• It is an electrochemical device
• Converts directly fuel into electrical energy by means of electrodes.
• Mostly platinum used as an electrode in Fuel cells.
• Transports ions through electrolyte.
• This produced electricity send to electric motors to propel the vehicle.
• This FCeV have higher efficiency and lower mechanical friction losses.
• Because of electronic controls in FCeV, the tuning of vehicle is very much simple and effective.
• In FCeV, the fuel regulators and auxiliary units were needed to handle high energy density fuel then
gasoline
FCEV
WHY FCEV ?

• Environmental Benefits

• Energy Efficiency

• Longer Range

• Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels

• Versatile Applications
TYPES OF FUEL CELLS

• Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM)

• Alkaline fuel cells
• Phosphoric acid fuel cells
• Molten carbonate fuel cells
• Solid oxide fuel cells
POLYMER ELECTROLYTE MEMBRANE (PEM)

• Automotive fuel cells were mostly of these types.

• Methanol and Hydrogen is used as a fuel in this type fuel cells.
FUEL CELL WORKING PRINCPLE

• Hydrogen Entry to anode.

• Electrochemical Reaction. (Split into protons (H+) and electrons (e-)).
• Electron Flow through the electrolyte.
• Oxygen Supply to cathode.
• Electrochemical Reaction.(Protons travel towards cathode at that time it mixes with oxygen
and forms water and exhaust).
• Electricity Generated because of electron flow, these electricity is used to various operations.
FCEV OPERATING SYSTEM

• Fuel supply and storage system

• Fuel cell engine auxiliaries
• Electronic drive system
 Blower
 Pump
 Heat exchanger
 Sensors
 Controllers
 Motor
 Batteries
FUEL SUPPLY AND STORAGE

Storage of fuel is difficult in FCeV because of high specific energy of 146 MJ/kg
where, Petrol having 46 MJ/kg. 5000psi capacity is needed to store hydrogen.
FUEL SUPPLY AND STORAGE
PERFORMANCE AND COST

• When compared to commercial vehicles the performance of FCeV is higher and it is also
higher in initial and operation cost because of noncommercial.
COMMERCIALIZATION DIFFICULTIES OF FCEV

• Cost Challenges
• Durability Issues
• Reliability
• Infrastructure Development
• Public Perception and Awareness
