Quarter 4 Week 1
Install Domestic Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Unit
Learning Competencies
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates an understanding of the
principles in the installing of a window type air conditioning
and refrigeration units.
Performance Standard: The learner independently performs the testing and
installation of window type air condition based on the
service manual.
Learning Competency: Conduct Performance Test on The Installation of
Window Type Aircon
Code: TLE_IARA10IR-IVa-IIj-4
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson the learner is expected to
1. check voltage and current according to unit power requirements.
LET’S RECALL
Directions: Write True if the statement is correct and false if it is wrong.
1. Disconnect the receptacle of the AC from the power source before
performing the continuity test.
2. If the selector switch is set to high cool, the contact made is L1, high, and
compressor on the selector switch.
3.If terminals 1 and 3 on the overload have no continuity, the overload protector
is good.
4. The contact point on the potential relay is normally open.
5. When the common terminal and compressor motor housing have continuity,
the compressor motor winding is open.
LET’S UNDERSTAND
The Electric Motors
• The compressor is the heart of refrigeration and air conditioning system it
compresses and squeezes the refrigerant from the low side to the side of the
refrigeration system.
• Single phase motors is commonly used
• Four types of single-phase compressor motors are the resistance –start
induction run, capacitor-start induction run, capacitor start capacitor run, and
permanent split-capacitor.
1. Resistance-start induction-run (RSIR) motor- this mainly used in small hermetic
compressor usually 1/3 Hp. It has low starting torque and must be applied to a
complete self-equalizing capillary system such as in household refrigerators,
freezers, small water coolers, and humidifiers. It has also high resistance
starting winding which is not designed to remain in the circuit for a long time
after the motor has attained running speed. A current relay is used to disconnect
the starting winding as the motor reaches its designed running speed, as shown
in figure 1.
Figure 1. A current relay mounted in the RSIR compressor motor.
The starting winding has a higher resistance than the running winding. Since it cannot
withstand the continuous high current draw, the running capacitor must be of low
microfarad (mfd) rating to limit the flow of current through the starting winding.
LET‘S APPLY
Directions: Watch a video on how compressor motor works in refrigeration systems
LET’S ANALYZE
DIRECTIONS: Essay . based on what you have observed what we have observed
how important is the function of the compressor motor in the operation
of the refrigeration system.
LET’S EVALUATE
Directions: Fill in the blank with a word or group of words that will complete each
sentence.
1. __________ motors more commonly used in domestic and commercial
refrigeration and air conditioning.
2. The compressor motor that does not use starting and running capacitors during
operation is the__________.
3. The compressor motor that uses potential relay is called ___________.
4. The permanent-split capacitor motor uses a running capacitor which is
connected in __________ with the starting winding.
5. The compressor motor that uses a starting capacitor to improve the torque is
called_______________.
LET’S CREATE
DIRECTIONS: Draw the four types of single-phase motor Use the following
legends.
• Common – red
• Start – blue
• Run – black
• Capacitor terminal red and black
