To find what values and attitudes scientist have, do the following activity. Interview a Filipino
scientist or read a biography of a scientist. What are the values and attitudes he/she demonstrate in
doing his/her discovery or invention?
Scientific Attitudes
A person must possess certain values and attitudes to be successful in making scientific
investigation. The following are some of these attitudes:
1. Curiosity or inquisitiveness. This implies a desire to learn. A curious
person frequently asks questions about the world.
2. Objectivity. This means being able to distinguish true observation
from hearsay. An objective person decides based on logical reason and
facts. He/she is not easily influenced by other people.
3. Open-mindedness. Tis is the ability of a person to be receptive to a
new ideas and information. An open-minded person is adaptive and
flexible.
4. Perseverance. This is the ability of a person to continue to work in spite
of many obstacles. It involves determination to finish one’s work.
5. Humility. This means absence of arrogance and pride.
6. Ability to accept failure. To scientist, failure may actually be a way to success. Failing in ones
work may lead a scientist to find new ways to resolves a problem.
7. Skepticism. This is the ability to question the validity and authenticity of something
considered factual. For example, Galileo Galilei questioned the belief that havier objects would
fall faster than lighter ones. He proved that the idea was wrong. We now know that both light
and heavy objects fall with the same acceleration when there is no air resistance.
8. Intellectual honesty. This means recognizing the work of other scientist before him/ her
reporting data truthfully. For example, Isaac New acknowledge that he built his laws of motion
using the work of Galileo Galilei and other scientist before him.
You will have to learn to develop these scientific attitudes through continuous study and
research. You must be patient and persevering. As you study science, you will learn to use the
scientific method in solving problems.
Scientist exhibit patterns of behavior guided by values and attitudes that constitute
habits of mind. These habits of mind are the key to their success. Some examples are shown
below.
Curiosity in conducting scientific inquiry
Respect for the use of evidence
Use of logical reasoning in crafting scientific arguments
Honesty in reporting results of investigation
Openness to ideas that challenge old ways of viewing and explaining the world
Striving for accuracy and precision in doing a task

Lets start the module by finding out how scientist conduct scientific investigation. As you go
through this lesson, keep on thinking about this question: Why is it important to acquire the right
attitude in doing an investigation?
The game consists of a set of clues to a murder. You are going to answer the following
questions:
Who was killed?
Who was the murderer?
What was the weapon?
Where did the murder take place?
At what time did the murder occur?
What was the motive?
The clues
When he was discovered dead, Mr. Black had a bullet hole in his thigh anda knife wound in his
back.
Mr. Patel shot at an intruder in the block of flats where he lived at 12:00midnight.
The janitor reported to police that he saw Mr. Black at 12:15 a.m.
The bullet taken from Mr. Black's thigh matched the gun owned by Mr.Patel.
The janitor went off duty at 12:30 a.m.
Only one bullet had been fired from Mr. Patel's gun.
It was obvious from the condition of Mr. Black's body that it had been dragged a long distance.
When the janitor saw Mr. Black, Mr. Black was bleeding slightly, but did not seem too badly hurt.
Miss Petty saw Mr. Black go to Mr. Pateľ's block of flats at 11:55 p.m.
A knife with Mr. Black's blood on it was found in Miss Petty's garden.

LESSON
1.2 COMPONENTS OF A SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION
12
SCIENCE 7 I ABADA COLLEGE
JERRY DE LEON TAAY- SCIENCE TEACHER
Learning to become a scientist is interesting and exciting. Many scientific skills are being
developed in the process of acquiring science concepts in the classroom, in performing experiments in
the laboratory, and in doing household chores. Scientists are detectives: they investigate various parts
of our universe and gather many pieces of information. Their goal is to put all these data together to
form theories – big ideas that can explain whole sets of facts.
This module will bring you to the world of scientists. How do scientists work? How do they
solve problems? In most cases, scientists solve problems by making thorough investigations. They
follow a logical method of solving problems called the scientific method. This method minimizes the
chances of making mistakes. You will study the following lessons in this module:

Do We follow certain steps or rules when e solve problems? Scientist do. They use specific steps
and logical approach in discovering and inventing things. We might be doing the same but not as
formal as what a trained scientist does. We are not just aware that we are using even basic steps
in scientific method in our everyday life.
Lets start the module by looking at the different steps of scientific method. As you go through

What can you say about your answer in the ARG guide? Do you have the right ideas on the
different steps of scientific method? Is scientific method always orderly? Are you certain of your
answer above? Are you certain of your of your answer above? What experience do you have that you
can use to defend your answer above? Are you certain that you know investigation? Are you sure that
you know that you have the correct understanding of scientific method or process? Let us try to check
your ideas by performing the next activity.
Activity 1.2 KWL Chart
Below is a KWL chart. It will help you evaluate your understanding of the lessons that will be taken
in this unit. You will be asked to fill in the information in different sections of this module. As of now,
you are just answer the first two columns.
What can you say about your concepts on scientific method? Is scientific method always orderly? Do you have the same
concepts with others? You are going to perform the next activity to find out which of your ideas are acceptable.
2. Formulating Hypothesis
17
SCIENCE 7 I ABADA COLLEGE
JERRY DE LEON TAAY- SCIENCE TEACHER
After you have identified the problem, formulating hypothesis comes next. This is a
tentative answer to the problem and should be stated in a sentence that start with “Maybe’,
“Perhaps”, “I think” or “If ________ then _______”.
3. Data Collection
All the things needed to perform the experiment together with the laboratory tools should
be prepared. Preparing them before the experiment will enable you to make an orderly and
systematized experiment.
4. Experimentation
Designing a test or procedure and performing it to find out if the result of the hypothesis
is correct. If the result of the experiment agrees withthe hypothesis, then it is advisable to have
more testing. But if the experiment result does not agree with the predicted, then the
hypothesis must be changed.
5. Analysis
The result of the experiment must be presented with reliable data and information. Collect
data and record the progress of your experiment. Document your results with detailed measurements,
descriptions and observations in the form of notes, journal entries, photo, tables, charts and graphs.
6. Conclusion
Analyze the data collected and interpret accurately. Summarize the result in written form.
Use your analysis to answer the original questions

Making Observations
All scientific studies begin with observations. Observations are done using your sense. When
you observe, you recognize some properties like color, odor, shape and texture. The data gathered
through the sense are referred to as qualitative data. Sometimes, when observing, you make use of
19
SCIENCE 7 I ABADA COLLEGE
JERRY DE LEON TAAY- SCIENCE TEACHER
tools such as a ruler, a spring balance, a thermometer, and a graduated cylinder. The data gathered
using tools are called quantitative data.
1. Quantitative observations- involve numbers, or an amount. Seeing that you have 2 text
messages on your phone is a quantitative observation.
2. Qualitative observations- involve descriptions that cannot be expressed with numbers.
Noticing that a bike is blue or that a grape tastes sour are qualitative observations.
Observations, however do not need to be direct. For example, the atomic nuclei and magnetism,
cannot be perceived directly through the sense organs but their effects on the other objects can be
observe directly.
Most of the time, you make an inference using observation. And inference is a statement of an idea
from observation. This is the basis for making a model. A model is used to visually explain something
that is not easily seen or understood.
