I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the one – hour period, the students should be able to:
Objectives:
1.Measure the mass of an object.
2. Relate the mass of the object to the number of pieces per item.
Materials Needed:
25 pieces paper clips of the same size and kind per group

Procedure:
1. Measure and record the mass of 25 paper clips (A)
2.Divide the mass obtained by 25 to find the average mass of one paper clip.(B)
3. Get a handdful of staple wires and measure its mass.(C)
4. Determine the number of paper clips by computing, not counting. (D)
Total mass/Average Mass of each paper clip
5. Count and record the number of paper clips (E)
Guide Q1. Is the number of paper clips in step 4 the same as the number of paper clips in
step 5?Why do you think so?
Guide Q2.Having an experience in counting by getting the mass, give some ways in which
you can apply this procedure in daily life situations.
Tell them the activity they just performed is for them to have a feel of how chemists
determine the number of particles based on the mass of the substance.
EXPLAIN
Present to them the concept of mole.
F. Developing mastery (leads
Let them solve problems on moles and Avogadro’s number conversion.
to Formative Assessment 3)
Make it clear that one mole of any substance is always equal to 6.02x10 23 particles but
they have different masses. Even though there is the same number of materials, different

• Would 1.50 moles of H2O have the same number of particles as 1.50 moles of any
