Sustainable Campus Initiative: Action-Project Reporting Template
The original objective of the project is to improve the “Air Quality” and thus bring
Sustainability in our workplace, homes and places where we spend most of our time.
We also look into the ways, methods and techniques in improving and maintaining an acceptable
level of air quality to secure the health and welfare of the community. The main issue related to
air quality is air pollution which leads to a global health hazard . We decided to implement
these ideas in our campus with the help of the concerned authorities. The ideas
mentioned in the project is practiced in our university and also followed widely by the
students as a whole.
2. Implementation (max. 200 words)
Describe in detail what happened when you implemented the project - or at least tried to
implement it? What were the early reactions of critical stakeholders, e.g. your college
administration, EAD, your peers, target audience, your family, etc.? How did you react on that
early feedback? Did you adjust your plans? What else were early signs that showed you that you
were moving into the right direction, or that things could go wrong? Who did you ask for advice
and which new cooperation did you initiate? How did you end the project?
As improving air quality is the main motive of the project, we as individuals decided to
contribute ourselves. Small contributions can lead to major change in the environment. Thus
bringing changes in ones own work place, homes or within a community can in turn help in
improving air quality. Say a person trying to improve air quality in his/her home can eventually
help the environment.
Firstly to begin with, we as students wanted to bring about a change in the environment.
Hence we decided to commute to the university by using the public transportation like
The Dubai RTA buses, metros and trams instead of using private vehicles for daily
commute. This helps in reducing air pollution as public transportation is more fuel
efficient per passenger mile, which contributes to an overall decrease in the amount of
energy necessary for transportation.
Also shared mobility was an another idea that could be followed by those students
commuting to the university. The idea is so simple that students coming from a common
place can carpool (“carpooling”) together with a group of students coming from a
similar area thus there is no need of using ones own private car for commute. Hence
group of 3-4 students can commute in a single car instead of everyone using their own
cars.
Secondly, “KEEP CLEAN”- A clean campus can be healthy campus as good indoor
hygiene can reduce dust and various allergens. Vacuuming the college carpets and area
rugs twice with the help of a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter can help in preventing the
spread of various allergy causing bacteria. Also mopping up of the floors in the
corridors and lobbies time to time can help in preventing any dust formation which lead
to the spread of various common allergens. This can indirectly help in preventing air
pollution or contamination of air.
Thirdly, our campus adopted sustainable energy practice where all the lighting systems
in the lecture rooms are controlled by light sensors which detect motion or movements.
Hence if there is movements or presence of people inside the rooms, lights are activated
and its deactivated if there is no presence of any human activity. Also the outdoor
lighting systems of the campus are controlled by solar sensing light sensors or photo
cells that turn on the light systems only when its dark. This can avoid turning on the
lights at inappropriate timings set using timers or manual switching on and switching off
of lights.
Thus, we as students managed to reduce air pollution which in turn improves air quality and at
the same time our campus reduced consumption of energy by adopting responsible energy
saving habits with the use of energy efficient devices and policies.
ARCAB:
As a student startup venture that was ideated, created and built by the
students of our campus with the help of the guidance team at the Incubation Centre,
Arcab a mobility service was launched which help computers on a daily basis to reach their
destination by reducing gap between crowded public transport and expensive private transport.
Use of such transport system helped in reduce air pollution to a greater extent.
BAITYKOOL:
Social Sustainability on the other hand is a framework that supports wellbeing of the
members of an organization, community or a social society as a whole. If only there exist
good air quality, the health of the public is safe else diseases like Asthma, and various
respiratory diseases would be common among the public where there is poor air quality.
While Economic Sustainability is basically those factors that support long-term growth without
causing negative impacts on social, environmental and cultural aspects of the community.
Thus all these easy to apply life practices can be practiced by others hence such small efforts
from ones part can contribute a lot in protecting the environment.
5. Youth as Change Agents (max. 100 words)
Please reflect on the learning journey of your team. How will you share your journey and the
learnings, the experiences of being part of the SCI project with peers, your college community,
other colleges and other youth networks?
As a team, learning and collaborating with each other was the best experience. We often did not
think much of the issues present in the evironment but when working as a team we were more
serious towards the issues happening in our surroundings and was thinking of some effortless
ways to follow techniques or practises which were practised and followed by keeping in mind of
the cost of implementation and other factors. It is a happy moment to know that we worked as a
group in helping the environment in protecting it and at the same time happy that our ideas are
implemented and helping the community as a whole.
