Load Calculations

Roof Slab

Self weight of 6” thick slab = 25 x 0.15 = 3.75 kN/m2

LL = 1.50 kN/m2
Weathering course = 1.00 kN/m2(assumed)

Total = 6.25 kN/m2

Factored load = 6.25 x 1.5
= 9.375 kN/m2 say 10 kN/m2

Floor Slab

Self weight of 6” thick slab = 25 x 0.15 = 3.75 kN/m2

LL = 3.00 kN/m2 (Refer IS 875)
Floor finish = 1.00 kN/m2 (assumed)
Add for partition walls = 1.00 kN/m2
Total = 8.75 kN/m2
Factored load = 13.125 kN/m2 say 14 kN/m2
Load calculations on Beams (Consider Frame B 1-2-3)
A. LOAD ON ROOF BEAM

For portion B 1-2

Self weight of beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.45 x 1.5 = 3.88 kN/m

Load from slab

The loads coming on B 1-2 will be

i.) trapezoidal load from one side
ii.) triangular load from other side
iii.) a point load from the transverse beam connecting B and C (BC – 4)

i.) trapezoidal load from one side

equivalent udl = w lx ( r / (2 + r) )

where w = load per m2 acting on roof slab since roof beam load is required = 10 kN/m2
lx = short span = 3.5m
r = (ly / lx ) = 6/3.5 = 1.71

therefore, equivalent udl = 10 x 3.5 ( 1.71 / (2 + 1.71 ) ) = 16.13 kN/m

ii.) triangular load from other side

Actually there are two triangular portions. Equivalent udl has to be calculated for both
triangular portions and maximum has to be applied over B 1-2.

Equivalent udl due to triangular load = w x lx / 3

= 10 x 3 / 3
= 10 kN/m

iii.) Point load calculation

Before calculating point load, udl on bean CB – 4 has to be arrived.

Self weight of beam CB-4 = 25 x 0.23 x 0.38 x 1.5 = 3.28 kN/m

Load from slab on CB-4 will be from two trapezoidal portions

As such equivalent udl = 2 x w x lx ( r / 2 + r)

Lx = 3m, r = ly / lx = 3.5 / 3 = 1.17

Therefore, equivalent udl = 2 x 10 x 3 x ( 1.17 / (2 + 1.17))
= 22.15 kN/m

total udl on beam CB-4 = 22.15 + 3.28 = 25.43 kN/m say 26 kN/m

Now, point load on Beam B 1-2 = 26 x 3.5 / 2 = 45.5 say 50 kN

Therfore, loads on Beam B 1- 2

UDL = 3.88 + 16.13 + 10 = 30 kN/m

Point Load = 50 kN

For portion B 2-3

Self weight of beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.30 x 1.5 = 2.59 kN/m

Load from slab

The load coming on B 2-3 will be triangular load from either side

Equivalent udl due to triangular load = w x lx / 3

= 10 x 3 / 3
= 10 kN/m x 2 (since two triangular
portions)
= 20 kN/m

Therfore, load on Beam B 2- 3

UDL = 2.59 + 20 = 22.59 say 25 kN/m

B. LOAD ON FLOOR BEAM

For portion B 1-2

Self weight of beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.60 x 1.5 = 5.18 kN/m

Load from slab

The loads coming on B 1-2 will be

i.) trapezoidal load from one side
ii.) triangular load from other side
iii.) weight of wall above beam
iv.) a point load from the transverse beam connecting B and C (BC – 4)

i.)trapezoidal load from one side

equivalent udl = w lx ( r / (2 + r) )

where w = load per m2 acting on floor slab since floor beam load is required = 14 kN/m2
lx = short span = 3.5m
r = (ly / lx ) = 6/3.5 = 1.71

therefore, equivalent udl = 14 x 3.5 ( 1.71 / (2 + 1.71 ) ) = 22.58 kN/m

ii.)triangular load from other side

Actually there are two triangular portions. Equivalent udl has to be calculated for both
triangular portions and maximum has to be applied over B 1-2.

Equivalent udl due to triangular load = w x lx / 3

= 14 x 3 / 3
= 14 kN/m

iii.) weight of wall above beam

Wall weight = 20 x 0.23 x 3 x 1.5 (if full wall)

= 20.7 kN/m
= 20 x 0.115 x 3 x 1.5 (if partition wall)
= 10.35 kN/m
iv.)Point load calculation

Before calculating point load, udl on bean CB – 4 has to be arrived.

Self weight of beam CB-4 = 25 x 0.23 x 0.38 x 1.5 = 3.28 kN/m

Weight of wall above beam CB-4 = 20 x 0.115 x 3.0 x 1.5 = 10.35 (partition
wall assumed)

Load from slab on CB-4 will be from two trapezoidal portions

As such equivalent udl = 2 x w x lx ( r / 2 + r)

Lx = 3m, r = ly / lx = 3.5 / 3 = 1.17

Therefore, equivalent udl = 2 x 14 x 3 x ( 1.17 / (2 + 1.17))

= 31 kN/m

total udl on beam CB-4 = 3.28 + 10.35 + 31 = 44.63 kN/m

say 45 kN/m

Now, point load on Beam B 1-2 = 45 x 3.5 / 2 = 78.75 say 80 kN

Therfore, loads on Beam B 1- 2

UDL = 5.18 + 22.58 + 14 + 10.35 = 52.11 say 55 kN/m

Point Load = 80 kN

For portion B 2-3

Self weight of beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.30 x 1.5 = 2.59 kN/m

Load from slab

The load coming on B 2-3 will be triangular load from either side

Equivalent udl due to triangular load = w x lx / 3

= 14 x 3 / 3
= 14 kN/m x 2 (since two triangular
portions)
= 28kN/m
Weight of wall above beam B2-3 = 20 x 0.115 x 3 x 1.5
= 10.35 kN/m

Therfore, load on Beam B 2- 3

UDL = 2.59 + 28 + 10.35 = 40.94 say 41 kN/m

C. LOAD ON PLINTH BEAM

Portion B 1-2
Self weight of plinth beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.38 x 1.5 = 3.28 kN/m
Weight of wall above beam B 1-2 = 20 x 0.115 x 3.0 x 1.5 = 10.35 kN/m

Total udl = 3.28 + 10.35 =

13.63 kN/m say 15 kN/m
Portion B 2-3
Self weight of plinth beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.30 x 1.5 = 2.59 kN/m
Weight of wall above beam B 2-3 = 20 x 0.115 x 3.0 x 1.5 = 10.35 kN/m
Total udl = 2. 59 + 10.35 = 12.94 kN/m say 15kN/m

Equivalent udl due to trapezoidal load = w lx ( r / (2 + r) ) r = 3.5/3 = 1.17

= 10 x 3 ( 1.17 / (2+1.17))
= 11.07 kN/m

Therfore, load on Beam AB -3

UDL = 2.59 + 11.07 = 13.66 say 15 kN/m

B. LOAD ON FLOOR BEAM

For portion BC - 3

Self weight of beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.38 x 1.5 = 3.28 kN/m

Load from slab

The loads coming on BC - 3 will be

i.) trapezoidal load
ii.) weight of wall above beam
i.)trapezoidal load
equivalent udl = w lx ( r / (2 + r) )

where w = load per m2 acting on floor slab since floor beam load is required = 14 kN/m2
lx = short span = 3m
r = (ly / lx ) = 3.5/3 = 1.17

therefore, equivalent udl = 14 x 3 ( 1.17 / (2 + 1.17 ) ) = 15.5 kN/m

ii.) weight of wall above beam

Wall weight = 20 x 0.23 x 3 x 1.5 (if full wall)

= 20.7 kN/m
= 20 x 0.115 x 3 x 1.5 (if partition wall)
= 10.35 kN/m

Therfore, load on Beam BC - 3

UDL = 3.28 + 15.5 + 10.35= 29.13 say 30kN/m

For portion AB - 3

Self weight of beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.38 x 1.5 = 3.28 kN/m

Load from slab

The load coming on AB - 3 will be

i.) trapezoidal load
ii.) weight of wall above beam AB-3

Equivalent udl due to trapezoidal load = w lx ( r / (2 + r) ) r = 3.5/3 = 1.17

= 14 x 3 ( 1.17 / (2+1.17))
= 15.50 kN/m

Weight of wall above beam AB - 3 = 20 x 0.115 x 3 x 1.5

= 10.35 kN/m

Therfore, load on Beam AB - 3

UDL = 3.28 + 15.50 + 10.35 = 29.13 say 30 kN/m

C. LOAD ON PLINTH BEAM

Portion BC - 3

Self weight of plinth beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.30 x 1.5 = 2.59 kN/m

Weight of wall above beam BC-3 = 20 x 0.115 x 3.0 x 1.5 = 10.35 kN/m

Total udl = 2.59 + 10.35 =

12.94 kN/m say 15 kN/m

Portion AB - 3

Self weight of plinth beam = 25 x 0.23 x 0.30 x 1.5 = 2.59 kN/m

Weight of wall above beam AB-3 = 20 x 0.115 x 3.0 x 1.5 = 10.35 kN/m

Total udl = 2.59 + 10.35 =

12.94 kN/m say 15kN/m
