Chapter 4:

1. Adipic acid (C6H10O4, molar mass = 146.14 g/mol) is used to make nylon fabric. Reaction of cyclohexane (C6H12,
molar mass = 84.16 g/mol) and molecular oxygen produces adipic acid via the following reaction:

C6H12 + O2 → C6H10O4 + H2O

If a chemist reacts 25.0 g of cyclohexane with 115 g of molecular oxygen and obtains 33.5 g of adipic acid, what is the
percent yield?

2. A solution is prepared by dissolving 10.8 g ammonium sulfate in enough water to make 100.0 mL of stock solution. A
10.00 mL sample of this stock solution is added to 50.00 mL of water. Calculate the concentration of ammonium and
sulfate ions in the final solution.

3. A 230. mL sample of 0.275 M CaCl2 is left on a hot plate overnight; the following morning, the solution is 1.10 M.
What volume of water evaporated from the CaCl2 solution?

4. When the following solutions are mixed together, what precipitate (if any) will form? Don’t forget to balance your
equations. Then, write the complete ionic and net ionic equations for reaction (a).

a. Al(NO3)3 (aq) + Ba(OH)2 (aq) →

b. FeSO4 (aq) + KCl (aq) →

c. CaCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) →

d. K2S (aq) + Ni(NO3)2 (aq) →

e. Fe(NO3)3 (aq) + NaOH (aq) →

Complete and Net Ionic Equations:

a.

5. What volume of 0.155 M HCl is needed to neutralize 35.0 mL of 0.101 M Ba(OH)2 solution?

6. What mass of silver chloride can be prepared by reaction of 100.0 mL of 0.20 M silver nitrate with 100.0 mL of
0.15 M calcium chloride? Calculate the concentration of each ion remaining in solution after the precipitation is
complete.

7. For the reaction below, assign oxidation states to each element and fill out the following chart.

a. H2O (l) + As (s) + KClO3 (aq) → H3AsO4 (aq) + KClO (aq)

Chapter 5:
8. What is the pressure -- in atm -- of gas inside the flask? What if the tube was open, and the atmospheric pressure
was 760 mmHg?

9. Find the volume, in mL, when 7.00 g of O2 and 1.50 g of Cl2 are mixed in a container, at a pressure of 482 atm,
and a temperature of 22°C.

10. A sample of methane gas at 0.949 atm and 40.0°C occupies a volume of 7.52 L. What volume will the gas
occupy if the pressure is increased to 1.58 atm, and the temperature is increased to 92.2°C?

11. Air has a density of 1.185 g/L at 25°C and 760. torr. What is the average molar mass of the air?

12. Consider a mixture of two gases, A and B, sealed within a flask. A third gas, C, is added to the same flask at the
same temperature. How does the addition of gas C affect the following?
a. The partial pressure of gas A increase decrease no change
b. The total pressure in the flask increase decrease no change

c. The mole fraction of gas B increase decrease no change

13. What is the average speed of a chlorine molecule at 650. K? What about a helium molecule?

14. At a certain temperature, the ratio of effusion rates for an unknown diatomic gas to chlorine gas is 1.5907.
Calculate the molar mass and propose an identity for the unknown gas.

15. A 12.0 g sample of gas occupies 19.2 L at STP. What is the molecular weight of this gas?
