Overview
The Information Age (also known as the Computer Age, Digital Age, or New
Media Age) is a historical period that began in the mid-20th century, characterized by
a rapid shift from the traditional industry established by the Industrial Revolution to an
economy primarily based upon information technology. The features of
the Information Age include everything concerning the electronic storage and
transmission of information.
Around the world, new information and communication technologies (ICTs) are
creating or supporting innovative systems and networks that are increasingly affecting
societies and their governments, industries, communities, and individuals. It is vital that
these technologies, and the opportunities that they create, be used to help close the
gap between North and South, between the "included" and the "excluded," so that
everyone has equitable access to sustainable development and growth.
The Information Age mark an era of rapid adoption of new technologies. The
beginning of the 21st century has been marked by the rise of a global economy and
Third World consumerism, deepening global concern over terrorism and an increase
in private enterprise. It began on January 1, 2001, and ends on December 31, 2100.
It is the first century of the 3rd millennium.
