SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:

The APU is installed in the lower aft

section of the fuselage, in a fireproof
compartment, aft of the pressure
bulkhead.

Removal and installation is accomplished

by using a hoist suspended from the
fuselage upper structure, through a
removable step of the ventral stairway,
and through an access cover in the APU
enclosure.

The APU is mounted by four mounts.

Access to the APU is gained through two

access doors.
The right access door is provided with a
pressure relief blow-out panel.

Combustion air for the gas turbine is

obtained through a set of electrically
controlled inlet doors.

Exhaust gases from the APU are let out by

a shrouded duct above the right engine
pylon.

ATA49
An accessory drive gearbox contains the
APU starter, the generator and the APU
system accessories.

A self contained oil system provides

pressure lubrication for the gears and
bearings.

The fuel system is normally supplied with

fuel from the right main tank.
The fuel is controlled automatically
during start-up by an acceleration
limiter.
During normal operation a governor will
control the fuel flow to maintain 100%
RPM to keep the generator frequency at
400 Hz.
An automatic fuel heater operates with
air from the compressor, air is let out
at the left side of the fuselage.

Air for cooling and ventilation is

supplied through an air intake from the
tail compartment, by a gearbox driven
fan.
Air is let out through an opening below
right engine pylon.

APU FUEL AND PNEUMATIC LOAD CONTROL:

The fuel system contains fuel heater,

fuel filter, fuel control, fuel solenoid
and fuel atomizer.
An acceleration and load control
thermostat and a 3 port valve is used
during start.
Fuel is normally supplied from the right
main tank, through an electrically
operated fire shutoff valve.
The fuel passes a fuel heater, which will
keep the fuel temperature between 5°C and
17°C.
Fuel from the fuel heater passes through
the low pressure filter to the fuel pump
and fuel control unit.
The pressurized fuel passes through the
high pressure filter to the governor
housing and the acceleration limiter.
The acceleration limiter controls the
fuel flow up to 95% RPM by returning
excessive fuel to pump inlet.

The acceleration and load control

thermostat will start to open at 600°C
±5°C and will be full open at 630° ±5° to
bleed servo pressure from the
acceleration limiter, to avoid excessive
exhaust temperature.

Above 95% RPM the governor starts to

regulate the fuel flow to maintain 100%
RPM.

The pressure relief valve in the fuel

control opens if the pressure exceeds 500
psid and bypasses fuel to pump inlet.

ATA4 9
The fuel solenoid opens for fuel to the
fuel atomizer when the oil pressure is
above 2 psi, sensed by the "Oil Sequence
Switch", (app. 10% rpm).

The fuel atomizer (flow divider) consists

of a primary and a secondary nozzle.
The fuel will always flow through the
primary part, and with increasing flow, a
spring operated valve will open for the
secondary part.

PNEUMATIC BLEED:

Pneumatic bleed extraction is regulated

by a bleed load control valve, and
controlled by the same acceleration and
load control thermostat used for the
acceleration.
The load control solenoid energizes when
the "APU AIR" switch is ON and the APU
RPM has been above 95% for 60 seconds.
The 3-port valve turns and servo pressure
from the load control valve is routed to
the overload thermostat.
The load control valve opens to provide
APU bleed to the pneumatic system.
If the exhaust temperature exceeds 630°C,
the overload thermostat bleeds some of
the load control opening pressure over
board, and the load control valve goes
towards close, to keep the exhaust
temperature within limit.

OIL SYSTEM:

The APU oil system is a positive pressure

dry sump, cold tank type, which supplies
pressurized oil for lubrication of the
gears and bearings of the engine and the
accessory drives.
Oil is scavenged from the areas being
lubricated, and cooled before returning
to the tank.

The oil is supplied from the tank to the

oil cluster.
An oil pump pressurizes the oil, and the
pressure is regulated in accordance to
the pressure after the oil filter by a
pressure regulator valve.
The oil passes a low pressure filter with
a by-pass valve.
An oil temperature switch is mounted at
the filter outlet.
After the low pressure filter, oil runs
to the oil sequence switch, and the oil
low pressure switch.

The consumed oil is scavenged through the

air/oil cooler back into the tank, by a
dual scavenge pump.

Breather pressure in the system is vented

from the tank to APU exhaust duct.

The oil tank has a capacity of 1 US

gallon. A manual fill cap, and a sight
quantity gage is provided on the tank.

ATA49
MD-80

The oil cluster, includes following

components :

- An oil pressure pump.

- A pressure regulator valve, which

regulates the oil pressure to 60-70 psi
measured at the test panel

- A 15 micron low pressure filter, with

a filter by-pass valve, which opens at
50 psid.

- A dual scavenge pump.

An oil temperature switch activates the

"APU OIL TEMP HI" legend on OAP (T >
121°C).

An oil sequence switch, activates fuel

and ignition at 2 psi oil pressure.

An low oil pressure switch, activates the

"APU OIL PRESS LO" legend on OAP (P < 45
Psi)

The oil is cooled by air from the gearbox

driven fan, and the air is exhausted into
the APU compartment.
If the oil temperature is low the oil
cooler is bypassed.

APU INLET DOORS:

Door section consists of one ram door and

two non-ram doors, operated by a 28 VDC
door actuator, a Ram door inter-lock
switch is provided for the start
sequence.

During start, the actuator turns

clockwise, and the non-ram doors moves
towards open, at 62° actuator rotation
the non-ram doors moves towards close,
and the ram-door moves to fully open,
(180° actuator rotation) the ram-door
will remain open until APU reaches 95%
RPM.

At 95% RPM, the actuator starts to turn

counter-clockwise, this will close the
ram-door and open the two non-ram doors.
At 70° the two non-ram doors are fully
open and the ram-door are fully closed.
The non-ram doors remains open until the
APU stops.
Internal rod (limit) switches controls
the actuator travel.

ATA49
MD-80

A Ram door interlock switch, activated at

20° actuator rotation is used in the APU
start phase.

When the APU is shut-down (master switch

to OFF), and the oil pressure drops below
45 psi, a 30 second time delay relay is
activated.
After 30 seconds the actuator turns
counter-clockwise until all doors are
closed.

APU ELECTRICAL CONTROL SYSTEM:

The Battery Bus supplies power to the APU

control circuit, and the DC Transfer Bus
supplies power to the start pump and the
inlet-door circuit.

START and RUN SEQUENCE:

When the master switch is moved to the

"START" position, the automatic start
relay is energized for 20 seconds, and at
the same time the overspeed stopping
relay will be energized.
This keeps the starter circuit activated
when the master switch is released to the
"RUN" position.

The door actuator will open the doors, at

20° actuator rotation the Ram door
interlock switch will close and provide
power via the energized automatic start
relay, to the APU starter relay, provided
aircraft is on ground or at least one
dead bus relay is energized.
The starter rotates the APU, and at 2 psi
oil pressure, the oil sequence switch
closes and supplies power to the ignition
unit and the fuel solenoid.

At 35% the centrifugal switch opens the

starter circuit, and cuts out the starter
At 95% the centrifugal switch will open
the ignition circuit, activate the hour
meter, and will energize the 95% holding
relay.

ATA49
The 95% holding relay activates the
warm-up timer, which will provide
possible air bleed after 60 seconds, with
the air switch in ON or AIR COND COLDER
by energizing the load control valve, and
the 3-port valve.

SHUT DOWN SEQUENCE

With master switch in OFF position, the

shut-off interlock relay interrupts power
to the 3-port valve and the load control
valve, causing them to close, regardless
of the air switch position.
At the same time a shut-off timer is
activated. After a cool down period of 60
seconds the APU shut down valve is
energized and will open for air pressure
to the centrifugal switch, this activates
the 110% overspeed shut down circuit.

PROTECTIVE SHUT DOWNS

The overspeed shut-down circuit provides

immediate shut down if RPM exceeds 110%.

The fire shut-down relay will provide an

immediate shut-down if an APU fire is
detected.

APU CENTRIFUGAL SWITCH

The centrifugal switch assembly controls

the sequence of operation of various
electrical components. It is driven by
the accessory drive and operates in
response to the speed of the gas turbine.

The functions of the three switches are:

- 35% Turns off the starter.

- 95% Turns off ignition,

start the hourmeter,
energizing the 95% holding relay.

-110% De-energizes Fuel solenoid,

De-energizes the Overspeed-stopping
relay, thus stopping the APU.

ATA 4 9
On units installed in aircraft, a method
of checking the operation of the 110%
switch is incorporated.
To check the overspeed switch, air
pressure from the compressor is supplied
through an overspeed check solenoid valve
to the port on the sentrifugal switch.
The air pressure acts against the
"piston", as a result, the flyweights
move the actuating arm, tripping the 110%
switch thus stopping the engine.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION:

The APU inhibit switch provides protection for the main engine
upper right cowl door from APU exhaust heat damage. The switch
prevents APU start while cowl door is open and also will shut down
the APU if cowl door is opened while APU is running.

The APU inhibit switch is mounted on a bracket located on inboard

forward end of pylon apron at upper cowl door forward latch pin.
Access is through upper cowl door.
