Section 1: General Questions

Of course we hear from a friend of a friend, from a former cabin

crew, from newspapers or the internet about how glamorous the life of
a cabin crew is or how much money they make or the benefits they get.
Hence, questions were raised on this topic and why shouldn't they?
You should know more about a job before you decide if it is right for
you or if you want to attempt a career at it.

What to Expect from the Job?

Here are some questions on the responsibilities of cabin crew and

what they are required to undergo to become a full fledged flight
attendant.

1. What are the duties of cabin crew?

Answer

Cabin Crew are primarily responsible for both the safety and
welfare of the passengers on board and should be equipped with
comprehensive knowledge of safety procedures to be able to
handle emergency situations such as aircraft evacuation. Every
flight the cabin crew goes on involves a pre-flight briefing
which includes specific zone assignment delegation, information
sharing pertaining to the flight, destination, customs and
immigration. Safety checklists may also be gone through at this
point. Once inside the aircraft, the cabin crew will ensure all
safety equipment are serviceable and prepare for the boarding of
the passengers. Delivering excellent service to passengers is
also an important aspect of being a cabin crew.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 5
2. What are the work hours like and which countries/cities
will be covered?

Answer

Some airlines divide their cabin crew into domestic and

International while others require theirs to operate both
routes. Regardless, you can expect irregular hours and duration.
Cabin crew who operate international flights may be away for up
to 2 weeks at a time while those who operate domestic flights
will likely do turnarounds whereby they'll return to base the
same day or sometimes operate flights that may take them away
for up to 5 days. Again this varies with different airlines.

3. What can be expected in the remuneration package?

Answer

The salary of cabin crew is usually divided into Basic and

Allowance. While the base pay remains more or less fixed with
yearly increments, the allowance which comprise meal, laundry,
transport and in-flight allowances can vary quite significantly.
Note that the allowance can decrease whenever the crew goes on
annual or sick leave. The combined salary for a new crew who's
just graduated from training is anywhere between USD 2,500 to
USD 4,000. To get a more accurate figure, please visit the
respective airlines' websites. The information should also be
publicized in the recruitment ads.

4. What other benefits do cabin crew get apart from a good

salary and opportunity to travel?

Answer

Most will also get free medical and dental, as well as,
performance bonuses. Some airlines also offer staff loans at
good interest rates and reward those who take very few or no
sick leave in each year. Staff can travel at great discounts and

www.newflightcrew.com Page 6
their family members may get annual free travels. The cabin crew
staff ID, too, is useful in getting discounts at many shops,
restaurants and airports worldwide.

5. Do foreign crew get housing allowance?

Answer

When an airline goes overseas to recruit foreign talent, it

would usually offer housing allowance to attract applicants.
However, some cosmopolitan airlines may not have that inclusion.

6. What is the career path for cabin crew?

Answer

Depending on the airline, there would usually be a few stages of

career progression up to the crew-in-charge level. Sometimes the
airline may offer internal promotion or transfer within its
various departments. They could be in the product and service
development, training or scheduling departments. These positions
are normally confined to the training or flight operations
facility and would involve less flying.

7. Can cabin crew have children?

Answer

Some airlines allow their cabin crew to take maternity leave and
return while others may require the crew to resign, have their
baby and later offer them their previously held position if or
when available.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 7
8. What is the retirement age for cabin crew?

Answer

This varies with airlines. Some have different retirement ages

for male and female crew; some have the same across the board
while others offer term contracts which may or may not be
renewed.

9. What happens when cabin crew become injured whilst on

duty?

Answer

Airlines insure their cabin crew. If injury is sustained whilst

on duty, hospitalization will be covered or reimbursed depending
on the airlines' policy. The crew will continue to be paid the
base salary when recovering at home. Long term medical leave may
be assessed at certain periods and salary may be determined at
each assessment.

10. Just want to know if passengers ever take advantage of the

female crew. If so, what should or could the crew do?

Answer

Unfortunately, harassment is not only confined to the ground and

can happen anywhere at any time. Yes, even at 35,000 feet! There
have been cases which were reported and made headlines in the
newspapers as well. The crew should always tell the passenger
firmly that his actions are unwelcome and that he will be
reported if he repeated them. The crew-in-charge and Captain of
the flight should be informed of the situation. Molestation is
an offence that can be charged in court. If the victim does not
want to press charges, the incident would still need to be
recorded in the flight report.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 8
11. How long after the interview does it take for them to
contact you?

Answer

It should take between 2 and 4 weeks to hear from them if you've

been selected. Unsuccessful applicants may wait longer to
receive the news in the mail.

Age/ weight/ height/ status/ medical criteria

Many of you have concerns and understandably so. Nobody is perfect

and we don't like rejection and some can't handle them either. So why
not find out beforehand how your imperfections may affect you getting
the job?

12. Will they accept someone who doesn't have 20-20 vision?

Answer

Airlines are not as strict with cabin crew as they are with
pilots when it comes to eyesight for obvious reasons. Many
airlines allow their cabin crew to wear contact lenses or even
spectacles.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 9
13. Is there any maximum and minimum age limit for cabin
crew intake?

Answer

Yes. Most airlines impose both a minimum, as well as, maximum

age limit for their cabin crew intake. The age limits will,
however, vary with the different airlines and can sometimes be
changed from time to time.

14. What are the medical standards required to become a

flight attendant?

Answer

You will be required to state previous and current medical

conditions on the application or employment form and go through
the airlines' medical test after you've been selected. You will
undergo a general physical examination which includes tests on
on eyesight, hearing, colour blindness. You may also be tested
for diseases such as AIDS, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis A & B.

15. Most cabin crew seem to be female so is it harder for men

to get the job?

Answer

Many airlines employ both male and female cabin crew these days.
Interviews are normally conducted separately and would be on
different days too. The recruitment ads would state clearly
whether they are looking for male or female flight attendants.
So there is no real advantage or disadvantage for either gender.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 10
16. What will happen if after a few years in the airlines, the
cabin crew put on a lot of weight?

Answer

Each year cabin crew will be subjected to quarterly or half

yearly performance appraisals by a senior crew member. They will
be assessed on job knowledge, performance, physical appearance
and deportment. If the crew has put on or lost a significant
amount of weight, he/ she will be advised to address the
situation for health more than aesthetic reasons.

Training

Some of you may also be curious about the training which resulted in
the following questions being asked.

17. How long does the cabin crew training take?

Answer

Training duration vary from 2 months to 6 months depending on

the airline. A more accurate time frame will be provided by the
airline itself. On rare occasions when the airline is expanding
quickly or has a severe shortage of cabin crew, training
durations have been known to be shortened to meet its demands.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 11
18. What are the topics covered in training?

Answer

Training topics vary with airlines but will generally cover

basics like 1)Safety equipment & emergency procedure 2)Passenger
handling 3)Product knowledge on food & beverage, aircraft
configuration and plane amenities 4) Service procedures
5)Grooming & deportment 6)Language & communication skills
7)Basic first aid procedures.

19. Are certificates awarded on the completion of training?

Answer

Yes, most airlines do award the cabin crew with certificates

upon completion of their training and even hold graduation
ceremonies for them.

20. Are trainees paid during training?

Answer

Yes, trainees will be given a basic salary.

21. Has anyone ever failed during training?

Answer

Anything is possible but unless it is a serious breach of

conduct eg. theft, causing grievous hurt to fellow colleagues or
misrepresentation of the company, trainees are often assisted to
complete the training.

Preparation for Application/Interview

After learning about the job and finding out what your chances are,
you need to prepare a sufficiently impressive CV. Then you’ll need to
know how to dress for the interview and find the appropriate attire
along with the correct attitude.

Here is where you lay your foundation. Equipping yourself with the
right key is essential to opening that door which will lead to a
world of insight and adventure!

22. How do I write an application letter to an airline company?

What information is necessary? How many words is
appropriate?

Answer

You should confine the cover letter to a single page with

information that describes the kind of person you are, your
hobbies, passion and outlook in life. A brief mention about your
family may be included. Also mention your strengths that would
help you become an excellent cabin crew and how you hope to
contribute and be a part of the airline's growth. Remember to
thank the person who is reading for considering you for an
interview. The other details such as personal particulars,
employment history, etc should be in the following pages and
preferably be in clear, point form.

23. I have difficulty writing a cover letter for the cabin crew
position. I am French and not proficient in English. What
should I do?

Answer

See question 22. You should get the assistance of someone who is more
proficient in English to tackle your grammar and spelling.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 13
24. I would like to apply for the cabin crew interview and am
preparing my photos for the application but unsure about
the kind of make-up to use.

Answer
It is important to look pleasant in photos but not over made up.
Go for the minimal foundation, trimmed eyebrows, blush and
lipstick. You may visit the cosmetics counters in shopping malls
and let the beauty consultants advise you on your colour tone
(ie. cool or warm). Make sure your hair is neat and doesn't
cover your face.

25. How many rounds of interview is the cabin crew

recruitment process?

Answer

The number of rounds varies from 2 to 4 with the different

airlines. They also depend on how the recruitment is conducted.
Some airlines conduct walk-in interviews so they get to
personally meet the prospective candidates in the first round.
Others may ask the interested applicants to submit a form
online. So do check with the respective airlines.

26. How should male candidates sit at an interview?

Answer

Male candidates can cross their legs or just place the feet flat
on the floor but not too wide apart. The hands should be placed
on their laps.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 14
27. I am female with long, frizzy black hair. Should I plait my
hair or relax it?

Answer

Hair should always be kept neat and should never cover the face.
The disadvantage of hair covering the face is you will tend to
use your hands to sweep it away or flick your head from time to
time whether subconsciously or not. Long hair always looks more
professional tied up but not necessarily in a bun. You can
choose to tie it in a ponytail or braids. Remember that you
should avoid touching your hair or any part of your body
unnecessarily during the interview.

28. Is it alright to pause when answering questions at the

interview?

Answer

It is good to speak slowly and audibly so pace yourself and do

not rush your sentences. Short pauses are find but long ones may
cause interviewers to think you're uneasy or uncertain about
your answers.

29. What is an appropriate attire to put on when going for the

interview?

Answer

It would be the same attire as you would wear to any job

interview. Dress smart. Depending on the weather of your
country, it's not necessary to wear a suit if it's hot and
humid. A simple shirt, trousers and tie will suffice for the
gentlemen and a blouse and skirt/pants for the ladies. Belts are
great accessories and leather shoes are best. Ladies can wear
covered pumps and the heels need not be high. Stockings should
be worn when wearing skirts. Of course, ensure the whole outfit

www.newflightcrew.com Page 15
is well pressed and be mindful of colour co-ordination. Stick to
basic colours such as white, black, grey and beige.

30. Their invitation says to dress Smart and Casual. I find it

very strange as usually they ask you to dress in business
attire.
Answer

These days smart casual can also be worn to work depending on

the job and position, not to mention, weather and climate. Many
designers, too, are fusing their business and casual attires.
I'd go for the basics for both male and female - White or beige
blouse/shirt and black, grey or brown pants/ slacks. Read up on
my article on attire for more information.

31. Would you have any tips and advice on how to dress
appropriately?

Answer

See question 29 and 30.

32. Will we be required to ask interviewers questions? If so,

what should we ask?

Answer

Sometimes the interviewers may turn around and say, ”Are there
any questions you'd like to ask us instead?” before dismissing
an interviewee. Perhaps some questions did rise up during the
conversation, so feel free to ask them. If you feel confident
enough, you may ask any of the following: 1)Do you suppose you
can let me know how I've faired in this interview so far? 2) If
I may steer away from this interview a little, may I ask where

www.newflightcrew.com Page 16
you got those lovely shoes from? 3)Can you divulge how many
cabin crew you are looking to hire this time around? If you're
not, then stick to “Thank you for hearing me out. I don't
believe I have any at this point in time. Hopefully, I'll get
through and then I'm sure I'll have questions along the way.”

33. What can be expected in an interview process?

Answer

This is the stage where an applicant is assessed for appearance,

mannerism, deportment and communication skills. The interviewee
may be tested with tricky or scenario questions just to be
observed for reaction and logical decision-making ability.

34. What can be expected in the discussion round?

Answer

Discussion rounds usually follow the interview process. At this

point, the shortlisted applicant will be assessed on how well
he/she performs in a group.

35. A lot has been mentioned about body language in an

interview, what should I be aware of?

Answer

Body language can relay as powerful a message as words so you

should exude a positive demeanor. Things to avoid are slouching,
crossing of arms, shaking of legs or unnecessary touching of any
part of the body like brushing hair off the face, scratching or
fiddling with spectacles/ watch/ jewellery. These are signs of
nervousness. Calm, collected and confident is ideal.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 17
36. What can be expected in a pre-meet phone interview?

Answer

At this point, the airline may just want to establish the

applicant's personal details and information. Perhaps, also
arrange for an interview date. This normally occurs when the
airline plans to hire a small number of cabin crew.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 18
Section 2: Personal Questions

In this section we are privy to some personal questions which were

sent by applicants who have concerns about their own faults or
inadequacies. They can be helpful as some of you may relate to one or
more of them.

Physique

This area is a big concern for many and is the most common. Since
there is already a preconception that cabin crew are attractive
people, further pressure is added when considering what type of
appearance is desired and what flaws may be accepted.

37. Will it matter if I have a birthmark on my left ankle? It is a

port wine stain type of birthmark (pinkish-reddish) and
quite big for a typical birthmark, about 1-3 inch patches.

Answer

I would have to say 'No'. Generally natural body pigmentation

should not be a deciding factor unless it is on the face, neck
or hands in which case easily noticeable. Even then it will have
to depend on the size and how obvious it is. Most airlines
permit or even require that their cabin crew wear leggings/
stockings so I imagine that would hide your birthmark quite
significantly.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 19
38. I have a small mole below my nose. Would that be an issue
in me getting cabin crew job?

Answer

If it's small like you say, it should not matter too much. Try
not to be too conscious about it or you may draw attention to
it. Otherwise, have it removed if you think that can boost your
self confidence.

39. I just want to know if airlines don’t hire candidates with

keloidal scars on their arms?

Answer

It depends on which part of the arm it's located and also what
sort of uniform the cabin crew wear. I don't see a problem if
the scar can be hidden by the uniform. If it bothers you that
much, you may seek cosmetic laser surgery to remove it.

40. Will airlines hire someone with a tattoo?

Answer

This is dependant on the airline. Most would not but if the

tattoo can be completely hidden by the uniform, they may make an
exception.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 20
41. My facial complexion is quite bad. I have scars from acne I
got during puberty. How will that affect my chances?

Answer

It's not clear what your scars look like so I'm unable to tell
you for certain what your chances are. However, you can consider
foundation to cover them up or in severe cases seek
dermatological treatment or surgery.

42. Will airlines hire someone wearing braces?

Answer

If possible, braces should be removed before an interview. As

they are not permanent fixtures, people with braces can be hired
provided they do not wear them during flight.

43. I have three artificial teeth. So is there any possibility for

me being hired by any major airline?

Answer

You are not specific about the visual aspects of those teeth.
These days artificial teeth can look very much like real teeth.
Unless yours are gold or silver and very obvious, I don't see
why you can't be hired.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 21
44. I have one porcelain false teeth at the back of my mouth
which cannot be seen but some airlines state that
applicants must have a complete set of teeth.

Answer

I believe a “complete set of teeth” means no gaps or dentures.

45. I do not have bad breath but my teeth (some) are decayed.
Will this affect my shot at the cabin crew job?

Answer

I'm not sure how obvious the condition of your teeth is and
whether or not they can be seen when you smile. If they are
really bad, perhaps you should try and get some dental work done
first. Furthermore, a nice set of teeth will give you loads of
confidence to smile.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 22
Age, weight and height limits

These are the next most common concerns. The good news is; if it's a
near miss you may still try your luck (Yes, luck plays a part too. If
you've read some of my articles you'll know what I mean) and you'll
never know when lady luck will shine upon you!

Unfortunately in this section, as much I wish to deliver good news to

everyone, it simply isn't possible. I try my best to be subtle if the
answer is an undesirable one.

46. Please advise if I should apply for EK cabin crew position

as I am 48 years old. I have seven years' prior experience
as a ground staff for two international airlines.

Answer

I'm afraid most airlines have a maximum age limit for their
cabin crew recruitment. Some may have positions for senior cabin
crew or trainers but you will probably need prior experience as
a cabin crew for those positions.

47. I am still very young but will soon reach the minimum age
requirement to apply for the Cabin Crew job. However, I'm
anxious about it now and wonder if there's any way I can
prepare ahead?

Answer

It's good to be motivated and of course you may do some

preparations beforehand. It seems to me you've already started
as you've found this website. If there is a particular airline
you're interested in, go to their website and read up on the
company's policies and history. Find about their cabin crew
requirements. If possible, speak to someone who's currently
employed in that airline. Next you'll need to learn about

www.newflightcrew.com Page 23
grooming yourself into their ideal candidate and stand out in
the interview.

48. I am 20 years old and about to graduate from university. I

wish to apply for Emirates cabin crew but their minimum
age is 21 years. Is it possible for me to go for the interview
now and let them know I'm available for employment 3
months later?

Answer

Emirates conducts recruitments regularly. So there really isn't

any need for the hurry. My advice is; finish your university and
get your degree, then watch out for the next Emirates cabin crew
recruitment. By then you should also arrive at their minimum age
requirement hence it'll be a win-win situation for you.

49. I'm only 17 but very interested in becoming an air hostess.

I know the ages are between 18-21 but would love to start
getting all the qualifications i.e courses that need to be
done at TAFE etc. Do you think they are necessary?

Answer

It is great that you have set yourself some goals. However it is

important to find out what the requirements are with the airline
you're interested in so that you won't be taking unnecessary
courses and wasting your time. Do also note that the minimum age
requirement varies with different airlines.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 24
50. Is there a weight limit for cabin crew?

Answer

Many airlines go by Body Mass Index (BMI) and want to ensure

healthy cabin crew as health problems can be linked to excessive
weight or obesity.

51. Is there a height limit for cabin crew?

Answer

There will be a minimum height requirement but not to punish

short people but mainly to ensure the cabin crew can reach the
overhead and galley compartments. As airlines operate different
types of aircrafts, the height requirements also vary.

52. When they do the height test, do you need to reach the
compartment with both hands or with just one hand?

Answer

This is dependant on the airlines. Some don't even conduct this

test.

53. I'm attending the Open Day soon but am worried because
I'm slightly plump but not overweight.

Answer

Just remember to carry yourself well. Deportment and mannerism

are far more important than a few extras pounds.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 25
54. I have applied for an interview for Emirates airlines and
I'd like to know if being 30 is too old to be considered for a
cabin crew position.

Answer

The age requirement should be stated in the recruitment

criteria. However, there have been cases where exceptions were
made when the applicants' ages were a few months over or under.

Previous/ current medical conditions

Sometimes I feel that the best person to answer this section is your
own doctor or GP. However, I have have consulted some ex-colleagues
for their opinions and attempted to provide responses from an
objective point of view.

55. I'm 31 years old. Can I be a flight attendant if I have

thyroid disease.

Answer

Unfortunately I will have to say your chances are slim to none.

You will be required to list down existing and previous medical
conditions on the application form. And you should be honest for
insurance purposes. Plus you will need to be examined by the
airline doctor as well. You could always try but I wouldn't keep
my hopes up.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 26
56. Does asthma prevent me from becoming a flight
attendant?

Answer

You should put your own health first. Consult your own doctor.
If he feels it is ok, you can try. However, you will be required
to list down existing and previous medical conditions on the
application form. And you should be honest for insurance
purposes. Don't forget that the airline will make you go through
a medical examination by their doctors as well. Remember your
main duty as cabin crew is to assist the passengers so you will
need to be in a tip top healthy condition.

57. Do airlines reject candidates who have mild scoliosis?

Answer

You should know that the job can be very physical; like lifting
of cartons, passengers’ luggage and not to mention, pushing of
meal carts. Furthermore, you are required to assist others in
the event of an emergency so you'll need to be in great healthy
shape. Consult your own doctor and seek his advice.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 27
Reservations about qualifications/ inexperience/Residency & marital
status/ language

It's all about meeting the criteria. Many of you are worried that you
don't measure up to the standards and wonder if there are areas you
can improve on or things that you can change.

58. Will I be rejected if I have a Bachelor's degree that is

unrelated to the aviation/ airline industry?

Answer

The most important asset a cabin crew can have is personality.

If you can convince the interviewers that you have a friendly
nature to go with your pleasant outlook, your irrelevant degree
is irrelevant. No pun intended!

59. I really love travelling and wish to be a flight attendant

but have a nursing degree. Will they accept me?

Answer

See question 58. In fact, a nursing degree may be an advantage

as it shows you're a caring person and it's also service
related.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 28
60. I am 26 years old and wondering if I'm too old to apply for
a cabin crew position.

Answer

Please check with the airline you wish to apply for. The age
limits vary and some even have the limit set at 28 years old.

61. Can I get the flight attendant job without any experience
but have a certificate in an independent external flight
attendant course?

Answer

Work experience may be an asset but not necessarily a mandatory

requirement. Successful candidates will go through comprehensive
training, as well as, on-the-job coaching and guidance
thereafter. Your external course may also be considered as a
useful tool. The important thing is to convince the interviewers
of your capability.

62. I am a Singapore PR and very interested in the cabin crew

job. Do I have an equal chance in getting the job as a
Singapore citizen?

Answer

I don't see why your PR status should affect your chances.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 29
63. Can a person work in any airline of her choice without
being a citizen in that country?

Answer

There are some airlines which are known to employ candidates

from foreign countries and even conduct interviews in various
cities just to recruit foreign talent. The advantages will be
having a pool of cabin crew who converse in different languages.
Check with the respective airlines' websites for information.

64. Do you know if _____________ airlines only hire people who are
single?

Answer

Criteria for cabin crew recruitment may change from time to time
so please check with the respective airlines' websites for
updates.

65. If someone can't swim, may she apply for the job as flight
attendant?

Answer

Swimming ability is an advantage but not necessarily a criteria.

The important thing is to not be afraid of the water.

66. I am worried about passing the English reading test.

Answer

Unfortunately, fluency in English is required in most airlines.

Perhaps it's best to brush up on your English first.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 30
67. I am married and have 2 kids. How would you advise me
on ways to handle homesickness and longing for my kids?

Answer

It is never easy being away from family and loved ones but you
are fortunate that the internet is so readily available,
accessible and affordable in this day and age to keep in touch
with them. And when at home, make extra effort to spend quality
time with them. Some people who have ground jobs may also work
long hours that prevent them from spending time with their
family. Work out what's best for your family and juggle around
it.

68. How do you maintain a relationship/ marriage with a job

that takes you away from home 50% of the time?

Answer

See question 67.

69. Emirates has a pool of cabin crew with diverse

nationalities. How can I ensure I get along or work well
with them?

Answer

Stick to the rule of humility and approachability. Do your job

well, extend help when necessary and don't step on people's
toes. When you have a friendly personality, you should be able
to get along with others.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 31
Hearsay on interview process

This topic would be great at the gossip tables. Depending on how

far down the “chatter chain” you're at, the things you've heard
may or may not be true. Some of the questions sound bizarre and
probably got a few people scratching their heads.

70. I heard that the cabin crew interview for Emirates Airlines
included some Mathematics questions and am wondering
what they might be.

Answer

Even if that were true, I'm sure it's not to test your
mathematical skills. Sometimes the interviewers may throw
unexpected, random questions to see your reaction, as well as,
test your logical or analytical capabilities.

71. Will the airline ring you if you're not selected?

Answer

Usually only shortlisted candidates will be notified but

sometimes unsuccessful ones will receive a standard rejection
notice in the mail.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 32
72. I am attending the preliminary interview for cabin crew
with Emirates. I hear that during group discussion they
can disqualify the whole group even if you make
contributions. Is it true?

Answer

Group discussion is a way of finding out how a person

participates and contributes in team. You will be assessed on
your communication skills and ability to interact with others.
Everyone should be treated as an individual at the end of the
day.

Previous failed attempts at Interview

Many of you who have gone for the interview and been unsuccessful
always write to ask what went wrong. I want you to know that
sometimes the answers aren't always as simple and direct as you would
like; that they cannot be pinpointed so easily. As frustrating as it
is not knowing why you weren't selected previously, the airlines
cannot be expected to contact all unsuccessful applicants and inform
them about their faults because of the sheer volume of applicants.
The effort is nugatory and frankly, would be a waste of manpower.

73. I tried the Emirates Airline four times but in vain and they
cannot give me feedback about why I am not selected. May
be you can help me out?

Answer

The airlines are not obligated to give reasons of rejection as

they would have too many people to respond to. Sometimes the
reasons also vary with different interviewers or requirements at

www.newflightcrew.com Page 33
the time. You may not like to hear it but sometimes it's also
luck.

74. I've been trying for Emirates cabin crew but cannot get
beyond the screening step. I don't know what's wrong with
me. I am good looking (as I am told), presentable and well
groomed. I have great communication skills. Is it because
of my age (32 years old)?

Answer

Sometimes when you fail, you tend to read too much into it and
start suspecting everything. Having great communication skills
is an asset but you need to be careful not to sound arrogant.
The answer may or may not be on your suspect list. I'm afraid
sometimes it can boil down to luck. If this is the job you want,
my advice is to keep trying. What have you got to lose? As for
the coloured lenses, I would avoid them if I were you.

75. I have been taking airline-related courses and have been

trying for airline jobs for the last 4 years without success. I
don’t know what the reason is.

Answer

Unfortunately, I won't be able to advise you on where your

problem lies without a more detailed description of yourself and
your trial methods.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 34
76. I have been to SIA, EMIRATES, ETIHAD, MAS Airline
Interview but I always out for the 1st round. I don't
understand why? I speak well in English during that day.
My ears are normal size but they may be a bit forward
which I think I can cover with my long hair.

Answer

Appearances can usually be corrected, disguised or even enhanced

with the appropriate make-up and hairstyle. I'm afraid I won't
be able to pinpoint your mistake without seeing you in person
but I do not believe your ears are it. Conversing well in
English may not be the only aspect they are looking for; it
usually is “the whole package”. Deportment, mannerism, composure
will all play a part as well.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 35
Section 3: Interview Questions

This section calls for answers that define you. Therefore many of my
example answers may not be appropriate for everyone. I have listed
them from personal experience, as well as, gathered from friends' and
colleagues' contributions. So, please modify accordingly. In some of
the glaringly obvious cases I have answered in the form of advice or
suggestion.

There are also scenario questions which will likely test if you have
any common sense, as well as, role-playing scenes which you may be
required to participate in. The important thing is to fully
understand the questions. There is no harm in asking the interviewer
to repeat the questions so that you don’t misunderstand them.

About yourself

This is your chance to tell the interviewers a story about yourself.

Yes, I use the word 'story' because it's pleasant. People enjoy
listening to stories so don't just list adjectives down one after
another. Gather one or two points and elaborate on them. Also
explain, if possible, why you chose what you said.

77. Tell us about yourself

Answer

If I have to use just one word, then it'll be “happy”. I feel

that there's a lot to embrace in life. Life itself is a miracle
and there really is no point in worrying or being negative. It
doesn't help except dampen the mood of the people around you. So
I've always had a very positive outlook in life. Christians
believe in not worrying as God will provide. Buddhists preach,
“Do unto others what you like them to do unto you.” The universe
reflects what you feel. If you are positive you attract positive
energy. Positive attitude is infectious. In a nutshell, I'm
thankful for what I have but believe in working hard to achieve
my goals at the same time.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 36
78. Describe your personality (including your qualities and
skills) for the profession as cabin crew member and the
characteristics you would like to change or improve?

Answer

I'm an extrovert and enjoy social and communication activities

so I believe that would help my job as cabin crew. I also enjoy
learning new languages and am always quick to apply the new
words/ phrases after learning them but that's something I have
to be aware of because some languages have rules about their
delivery which could offend people if not observed properly.

79. Why do you think you will make a good flight attendant?

Answer

Mention your personality and how easy and outgoing you are, etc.
You may see question 78 as well.

80. What do your family think about you applying for this
position ?

Answer

I am very lucky to have supportive parents encurage me to go for

my dreams. My younger brother is also extremely excited; also
because he knows I'll bring him souvenirs from different
countries.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 37
81. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Answer

Ok, the strengths and weaknesses focused on here need not be

relevant to the cabin crew job. It's just to assess how you see
yourself. When mentioning your strengths, elaborate on how they
can be useful to the people around you or work in general.
Weaknesses pointed out should be followed by how you have
acknowledged them and are constantly trying to improve. Example:
I have a lot of courage; courage to find new adventures, courage
to learn new skills, courage to participate in different kinds
of sports, etc. This courage makes positive influences on the
people around me and strengthens my relationships with them. My
weakness would have to be my competitive nature especially when
playing sports and games. I hate to lose. But I try to remind
myself that most of these events are for social purposes and
that I need to loosen up in order to really enjoy them and not
annoy the people I play with.

82. Tell us about both your good and bad qualities.

Answer

See question 81.

83. What are your hobbies?

Answer

I enjoy a good Zumba workout. I've bought the DVDs that came
with dumbbells and organized weekly workout sessions with my
girlfriends. Keeping fit makes me feel good both physically
because I look good and mentally because I know I'm healthy.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 38
84. What don't you like to do?

Answer

I really don't like to disappoint others. While I realise that

sometimes it's impossible to please everyone, I do know that you
can always try and give it your best shot. I can lift my head up
high when I know I've tried my best and yet fail.

85. What is your favourite movie & why?

Answer

I enjoyed Arlington Road thoroughly! If you haven't seen it then

I won't tell you why because you should really go watch it. Just
know that the movie starts off quite brilliantly and has many
interesting twists to it. If you have, then you’ll understand
why!

86. What is your favourite food and why?

Answer

My favourite food has to be steamed or boiled prawns. Of course

they have to be fresh. I like them because they have a natural
sweet taste that doesn't need much modification to improve; plus
they're so quick and easy to cook. Just add some ginger into the
boiling water and you're good to go!

87. What do you do in your spare time?

Answer

I babysit my nieces and nephews during the weekends. They're

just amazing and always crack me up. I'm glad to help my

www.newflightcrew.com Page 39
brother/sister out and at the same time get to bond with them as
I believe in strong family values.

88. What were your favourite subjects in school?

Answer

Literature always put me in a dreamy mood; when I'm not arguing

with my teacher that is! It's a lot like life which can be seen
or interpreted in many ways and angles. Plus there really is no
right or wrong answer; just a point of view.

89. How do you motivate yourself?

Answer

Whenever I feel down or lose my focus, I try to remind myself

about how fortunate I am; that there are so many more people out
there who are less fortunate than I. That always helps put me
back on my feet. Well, that plus a tub of Häagen-Dazs' peanut
butter swirl!

90. If we give you a free flight ticket now, where would you like
to go? Why?

Answer

Only one? (Jokingly) Then it has to be a city where there's a

Wonder of the World. It would most likely be Beijing or Cairo.
There's too much history behind these “wonders” and I feel it's
an honour to the hard-working, ill-fated builders to admire
their work.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 40
91. Who is/was the most important person in your entire life?

Answer

My mother. Without her, I wouldn't be what or who I am today.

Her love and sacrifices for my brother and I proves to us that
there is such a thing as magnanimity.

92. Tell me about your life at College or University (or even

your time in your previous job).

Answer

College was a time for experimenting and exploring my options in

life. Everyone expects you to be a doctor or lawyer or
accountant but I always thought they were rather boring jobs. I
took general subjects as I was unsure about what I wanted to do
but I'm thankful for college years wherein I learned hard,
played hard and formed many meaningful friendships there.

93. Why should we hire you?

Answer

I have a lot of self respect and thus take pride in the things I
do; especially if it concerns my career. A person like me will
strive to do a great job, if not an excellent one and only get
satisfaction from a job well done.

94. How do you differ from others?

Answer

Everyone is an individual with unique characteristics and

qualities. I see myself as a normal person except maybe I crave

www.newflightcrew.com Page 41
interaction more than an average person. Even at bus stops I
won't hesitate to strike up a conversation with a total
stranger! NB: Be careful about saying something like this if you
are male.

95. What do you notice first when you see a flight attendant?

Answer

The face and hopefully a smiling one.

96. Are you a day or night person? Can you work nights,
weekends and holidays?

Answer

I'd like to think of myself as the flexible type. I'm fully

aware of what my body is capable of handling and will rest
accordingly in order for me to function to my full potential so
it doesn't really matter if it's night or day.

97. If we were to ask you to rate yourself within 1 to 10 (10

being perfect), what would be your answer?

Answer

I would have to say a modest 7. Every day is a learning

experience and no one can be perfect except in the eyes of a
loved one.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 42
98. Is there anything special about yourself that you want us
to know?

Answer

I don't think I'm any more or less special than you or the
person outside this room. However I do have good qualities like
sincerity, loyalty and reliability which I feel are important
traits for a person to possess; perhaps coupled with a few small
talents unrelated to this job like being able to play the
accordion and tap dance.

99. What can your work mates say about you?

Answer

Easy-going and reliable. They know they can always count on me

in both good times and bad; if they need help or just a
listening ear. I believe in valuing friendships and understand
the importance of strong bonds.

100. How do people generally describe you?

Answer
See question 99.

101. What is the one thing about yourself that you are
most proud of and what are your strong points?

Answer

I'm very grateful for my fast metabolism rate. I do occasionally

hit the gym but don't really have to worry about putting on
excessive weight even with my big appetite. My strong point
would have to be my ability to remain calm in adverse situations

www.newflightcrew.com Page 43
and take a step back to see the big picture to find a solution
from a broader perspective.

102. How well do you handle stress?

Answer

I feel that stress is something you create yourself. There are

necessary and unnecessary stresses. Once I can identify and
separate the two, I'll know what to do. Of course yoga and
meditation helps too.

103. Can you work well under deadlines or pressure?

Answer

I'm the kind of person who requires planning and task managing.
It helps me focus and prioritize. I see deadlines as a way to
manage my tasks. Even if not given one by the company, I always
set my own deadlines and thus am able to complete beforehand.

104. Tell me about your negative points?

Answer

I am calm and don't get overly excited by jumping up and down

when I receive good news. I just can't see myself screaming the
girlish high-pitched screams and hopping around. According to
some of my close friends, it's a negative trait as they
interpret it as me not sharing their joy and excitement when
they deliver a piece of good news to me.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 44
105. How do you measure talent?

Answer

I don't believe talent can be measured but it can certainly be

recognized and appreciated. When a person has a flair for an
ability that comes almost naturally, that's talent for sure.

106. What types of people do you get along with and why?

Answer

Sociable people don't have problems getting along with others so

saying that I getting along with them is like an understatement.
On the other hand, introverts are a tough nut to crack but I’m
happy to say that I have pretty good relationships with some of
them. They’ve even confessed feeling comfortable enough to open
up to me. Perhaps it's because I know when to speak and more
importantly, when to listen. I am happy to say that I get along
with most people, young and old, because I always try to put
myself in their shoes and see from their perspective.

107. This job will require you to work with people from
very different backgrounds to yourself. How will you
manage this?

Answer

If you're already in the service industry, explain how you're

already accustomed to working with and serving people from
different backgrounds. Otherwise: I have many friends from
different backgrounds. I strongly believe that “mutual respect”
is the key in any friendship or working relationship.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 45
108. How will you cope with the wide range of
personalities among our employees?

Answer

See question 107.

109. Do you try hard to get others to like you?

Answer

I wouldn't say I have to try hard but I know that I try to be as

honest and humble as I can and people respond to those virtues.
I live by the rule, “Do unto others as you would have others do
unto you”.

110. Are you able to work alone without direct

supervision?

Answer

I'm not going to lie and say I can straight away. Of course I'll
probably require guidance and supervision on my first couple of
weeks on the job but since I'm a fast learner, I am sure I'll
get into the swing of things very quickly.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 46
About past job & experiences

Don't be too alarmed by some of the questions that seem totally

unrelated to the airline or the cabin crew job. Questions are at
times thrown from different angles to cover different topics just to
see your reaction and response. Remember, there usually is no right
or wrong answer. You are merely being observed for and assessed on
your character, personality and communication skills.

111. What job position are you currently holding with

your current employer?

Answer

Be forthright about your answers but don't just stop there.

Describe briefly what your responsibilities are and how
important your contribution is to the company. Mention the
number of years you’ve been with the company and how you got the
job. If you’re in a senior or management position, describe how
you got to your position. If teamwork is involved in your
everyday duties, it's best to include that. Also mention how
grateful you are for the experiences you’ve accumulated and if
relevant to the airline, how useful they will be.

112. Tell me about the culture at your last

company/employer.

Answer

Mention some things about your working environment and the

company's philosophy. You may also describe your employer
briefly.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 47
113. What do you enjoy most in your current job & why?

Answer

If yours is a service related job, describe how you have the

opportunity to experience different situations/ challenges each
day; that your job is never mundane. Otherwise, just mention
your actual situation. Explain your happiness at work. Emphasize
on teamwork and how well you work with your colleagues and that
everyone’s combined effort is conducive to a healthy working
environment. Relate one or two successful outcome if any, as a
result of teamwork.

114. What do you dislike most in your current job?

Answer

Don't mention anything that results from your job responsibility

or related to work hours and over-time as they may sound like
complaints. Choose something that is beyond your control.
Example: The job is good. Sadly my boss always delays paying his
employees' salary. I can understand if the company has cash-flow
problems but delaying for no apparent reason just seems to me he
doesn't value his employees and appreciate their work.

115. Why do you want to leave your current job?

Answer

My passion lies with being a flight attendant so I'm merely

following my dream.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 48
116. Why do you want to join airline industry?

Answer

See question 115. You may also add that the airline industry
provides a rewarding career that allows you to gain valuable
experiences that many other industries do not; such as
opportunity to visit historical places on a regular basis and
exposing yourself to the various cultures of different
countries.

117. Why do you want to change from hotel to aviation

industry?

Answer

Working in the hotel had enabled me to interact with a wide

variety of nationalities and they have always told me about
their countries and cultures which I find intriguing and
educational. A job in the aviation industry will allow me to
experience these cultures and learn about them more. Equipped
with the knowledge, I believe I can relate to the customers/
passengers better; hence enabling me to excel at my job.

118. What is the worst thing you have heard about our
airline? And why after hearing it you still want to join us?

Answer

That the tickets are very expensive. Price to value ratio is

very subjective. I believe you can justify your high prices for
great cabin service. Just as people are willing to pay
exorbitant prices for luxury brand names like Louis Vuitton and
Bvlgari, they will be just as happy to pay to travel in comfort
and luxury for which I know _______ Airlines is renown.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 49
119. Is there anything you think we do badly?

Answer

Perhaps the website should be better navigated but I'll leave

that to the tech guys.

120. What did you learn from your previous job that
would be helpful in your position as a cabin crew?

Answer

I've learned that it's not impossible to turn an upset client

into a satisfied one especially if you show genuine willingness
to help him/her. People can see sincerity which is something not
easy to fake. So, if a passenger is unhappy about something
prior to his/her flight, a friendly and understanding crew who's
willing to help or hear him /her out can help turn things
around.

121. Can you describe a time when you've faced a difficult

challenge and how you overcame it?

Answer

Personal challenges are great stories to tell. It could be a

physical challenge like overcoming weight problem, a weakness or
financial difficulty you conquered or improved or even
relationships you helped save. Example: It was when my
grandmother was placed in a nursing home because none of my
relatives had any room for her. I was renting a room then while
my mother was doing the same in another flat and my sister was
in the university hostel. Each time I visited her, she would cry
and say she hated the place and wanted to go home with me. It
broke my heart so I promised myself I'd save up and take her out
of there. There were two challenges I faced; one was to save
vigorously even though I had to pay rent and my sister's school
fees and the other was to persuade my relatives to help pay for

www.newflightcrew.com Page 50
a maid to care for my granny when she lived with me. My
determination and sacrifices paid off and I managed to save
enough money to get a flat and took my granny home. She was so
happy, tears overwhelmed her.

122. What is the most difficult situation you have faced?

Answer

See question 121.

123. What is your biggest accomplishment? Tell us about

it.

Answer

Once again, this can be anything from learning a new skill to

overcoming a phobia to securing a new home. Example: It would be
purchasing my first home just after 4 years in the workforce. I
was pretty lucky to be “at the right place at the right time.”

124. Give me an example of when you've produced some

poor work and how you've dealt with it.

Answer

Poor work previously done in school is the best example. They

could be due to laziness, playfulness, etc. Describe how your
grades suffered and gave you a wake-up call and from then on,
you were determined to turn things around and put in more effort
or get extra tuition.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 51
125. Tell us about something that really annoyed you
recently.

Answer

I've loaned some money to a good friend who decided to put a

price tag on our friendship. I really hate losing a friend
because of money.

126. Have you ever dealt with a customer making an

unrealistic demand?

Answer

If you have had that experience, just relate the incident and
describe how you resolved the situation. Otherwise it's not
entirely terrible to say NO. Example: No, I haven't but imagine
it would be quite a challenge if I did. If the request was truly
unrealistic and beyond my jurisdiction, I'll have to tactfully
explain the reason why it can't be met and offer an alternative.
If my superior can resolve the situation better than I, I would
refer it to him/her.

127. Name your most unforgettable experience in the

service industry.

Answer

It can be a good or bad experience but relating an unforgettably

good experience is always more pleasant to people's ears. So
recount the incident and explain why you can't forget it.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 52
128. Give some examples of when you received a good or
a bad customer service.

Answer

An example of good customer service would be when I was having

dinner at a restaurant and the waiter introduced himself when he
seated me, asked if I was dining alone and since I told him I
was expecting a friend, he asked for my name and kept a lookout
for her and once he spotted her, took the initiative to ask if
she was joining me and showed her to my table. A terrible
experience of bad customer service was when I was shopping a
friend who was with her 1 year old son when she needed to change
his diaper. We walked into a shop that sold baby clothes and
asked where their baby changing room was. The salesperson
pointed to a fitting room but we insisted that was wrong and
then he said they didn't have one. We then walked out to the
mall's information counter and was told that there was a baby
changing room in the baby store. So we went back inside and
searched for it ourselves. After we found it, I went to tell the
salesperson where it was and he simply gave me a blank look. His
colleague who was with him the whole time did nothing as well.
This shows you can deliver poor customer service by having poor
product knowledge, playing ignorant and simply unwilling to
help.

129. Have you ever, in your opinion, provided an excellent

customer service in the past and what was it?

Answer

I was waiting tables in a small cafe when a customer fainted. I

checked for her airway, breathing and circulation which I
learned from a first aid course I took privately. I made sure
she hadn't choked on her food too. When everything was in order,
we lifted her to a corner table and used table cloths and
napkins to make her more comfortable. She soon came around and
rang her relative. I accompanied her to a nearby clinic while
she waited for her sister to arrive. I only left after I've
recounted my actions step by step to the doctor. A week later,
the lady returned to the cafe and thanked me with a box of
chocolates.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 53
130. What can your manager say about you?

Answer

My manager can tell you that I'm not only a hard worker but a
smart worker; that whenever I have ideas to improve productivity
I won't hesitate to contribute or suggest. I like to constantly
brainstorm for a better, more successful working environment.

131. What is the worst feedback you have ever got and do
you think it was accurate?

Answer

One of my classmates in school used to complain to the teacher

that I had body odour and asked to not be seated next to me. It
was, in my opinion, a suspiciously inaccurate accusation because
it was right after a misunderstanding between us. Furthermore,
I'm very conscious about personal hygiene and have consulted
others on their opinion.

132. Tell us about a time when you failed to meet a

deadline. What were the repercussions?

Answer

It was when I couldn't hand in a school assignment on time due

to sickness. Unfortunately, no exceptions or pardon could be
made so I failed that paper miserably. It was very untimely as
it was a final examination paper. Not surprisingly it brought my
overall grades down and I wasn’t able to get into the class I
wanted.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 54
133. Describe a time when you used your communication
skills effectively.

Answer

It must have been the time when I resolved a conflict between my

cousin and her mother. Their disagreement with each other
resulted in a year-long non-contact. I had to pick the correct
moments to speak with them separately and get them to see from
each other's point of view. It took patience, persistence and
definitely careful choice of words to help them resolve the
misunderstanding.

Scenarios – passenger handling

Here they assess how you deal with customers and see if you’re
able to tackle difficult and tricky situations.

134. What would you do if a commercially important

passenger complained that another commercially
important passenger is snoring too loudly behind him?
Answer

I would listen to the passenger and try to sympathize with him

but should not awaken the snorer right away unless there's no
other option. Earplugs can first be offered or headphones piping
in classical music can be suggested (this always puts me to
sleep on a plane). If another seat further away is available,
offer to change his seat. Since he's a commercially important
passenger, an upgrade may be necessary instead. Otherwise, ask
him to try these solutions first and if they still fail, I may

www.newflightcrew.com Page 55
have to resort to waking the snoring passenger up gently with my
senior crew's permission.

135. If, for example, there are 30 children on the flight

but you only have 15 toys. How would you deal with this
situation?

Answer

I believe there would be a few types of amenity kits for

children of various ages. Some kits come in sets so these can be
sub-divided. For example, I can separate the items inside and
perhaps hold off handing them out till later in the flight too,
as some of the kids may fall asleep while the restless ones will
appreciate the distraction at different times. I'll need to
ensure the kits are age-appropriate as some of the older kids
may not want some of the items inside. They may also prefer to
watch cartoons or play the interactive games instead.

136. What would you do if a passenger claims you have

forgotten his drink request?

Answer

I have to sincerely apologize for the mistake but not offer any
excuses as that may annoy the passenger. I should not make
remarks such as “Are you sure it was me you spoke to?” Next, I
should offer to bring him his drink immediately and perhaps a
few packs of snacks to complement the drink. Then I'll inform my
colleagues about the incident so that no one else should forget
his future requests.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 56
137. Would you accept a tip? What would you do if
someone asked for your phone number?

Answer

I have to tactfully decline the tip and inform the passenger

that it's my duty as a flight attendant to take care of his
needs during the flight and that his comfort and satisfaction is
rewarding enough. As for the phone number, I may ask the
passenger to give me his/her business card instead of divulging
my contact details.

138. How would you handle a passenger who has left his
seat reclined during a meal service?

Answer

I'll tactfully request that the passenger places his seat

upright and explain that the person behind needs the space to
have his meal.

139. Would you permit a passenger to kneel down and

conduct his religious prayers during take-off?

Answer

This is obviously a delicate situation. However first and

foremost the passenger's safety is of utmost importance. I would
have to deal with this situation by calmly speaking to the
passenger and telling him we respect his choice to pray but he
cannot do this during take-off because he may put himself and
the other passengers in danger. I would politely ask him to take
his seat. If he refuses he can choose to disembark to pray in
the airport and catch the next available flight to his
destination. Of course this may cause some delay to the flight
but allowing the man to continue to pray would set a precedent
that may cause greater problems for the future. Also if I were

www.newflightcrew.com Page 57
a junior cabin crew I would confer with a senior as there are
many other sensitive issues involved.

140. What do you say to or handle a passenger who is

terrified of flying?

Answer

I'd ask the passenger his reason for travelling and the
importance of his journey. It could be to see a medical
specialist or a family member. I'd remind him why he made the
decision to take the flight in the first place and tell him I've
flown hundreds of times and will be there for him during the
flight. I could offer magazines to distract his fears or suggest
some comedy channels to watch. I'd also check on him
periodically, especially during bad weather when people tend to
get more nervous.

141. What would you do if you had to deal with an angry

customer?

Answer

If the passenger was angry about the ground service for example,
I need to show him that I sympathize with him and find out the
details. I'll get him to recount his experience and get the
crew-in-charge to write a report on the matter. I'll then assure
him that we'll channel his feedback to the company and take
necessary actions. In the meantime during the flight, I'll make
sure my colleagues and I pay extra attention to him and see to
his comfort and enjoyment.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 58
142. What will you do if your passenger is delivering a
baby?

Answer
I'll inform my superior and page for a doctor or nurse to come
forward to assist. If none is on board, we'll have to apply what
we have been trained/ taught during first aid courses.

143. How would you deal with a drunken passenger who

is causing a scene?

Answer

Very carefully. Seems most intoxicated people hate to admit they

are drunk so I'd refrain from using the 'D' word. If it's
possible to isolate him, that would be the first step. Then his
following drinks would have to be diluted or without alcohol at
all. I'd try to get him to eat some more food to counteract the
alcohol level in his system. Maybe provide him more pillows and
blankets and get him comfortable enough to fall asleep.

144. How would you deal with an upset passenger?

Answer

Assuming the passenger is crying as that's the easiest tell-tale

sign, and female for this scenario's sake, I need to approach
the situation carefully and not sound intrusive. A simple
gesture like asking, “Ma'am, is everything alright? Perhaps I
may get you something to drink?” If the offer is accepted, I'll
bring a pack of tissues along with the drink and say,”Please let
me know if there's anything I can do or if you'd just like me to
listen. My name is ________ and if I'm not around, just ask
any one of colleagues to get me.” If she doesn't open up, I’ll
make sure to check on her from time to time, offering plane
amenities like stationery, reading material or ice-cream if
available because that always cheers people up!

www.newflightcrew.com Page 59
145. A passengers needs to go to the restroom while you
serve from the meal cart. It is a single aisle airplane and
you are between the passenger and the restroom. What
will you do?

Answer

It doesn't take very long to move the cart out of his way to let
him through and then push it back and continue with the service.
I'm sure he will be very grateful for that gesture.

146. How would you handle the parent of a baby who

keeps crying?

Answer

Babies can be a handful and I don't expect every parent to be

able to always be in control. What she needs right now is
understanding and sympathy. In the beginning, I have to trust
the parent to handle her baby but if the crying persists for a
reasonably long time and the parent looks in distress, I'll ask
her if there's anything she'll like me to do to help. I'll
inform her about the amenities available on board for babies in
case she isn't aware of them and try to brainstorm with her on
ideas to entertain the child. We'll also need to ascertain if
the baby may be ill. In that case, a doctor may be required to
assist.

147. What would you do if you spilled a drink on a

passenger while you are serving him?

Answer

The first thing to do is apologize. Then I'd inform the

passenger that I'd get a towel and soda water if the clothing is
stained. I'd offer to help wipe the spillage but only with his
permission as some people do not like close contact with others

www.newflightcrew.com Page 60
especially if they are the opposite sex or due to religious
reasons. If the stains can be removed, I'd apologize again and
offer to bring him another drink. If the clothing is badly
stained, the crew-in-charge should be informed so that he/she
could present the passenger with a laundry reimbursement at his
destination.

148. What would you do if a passenger gave you a soiled

diaper to discard whilst you are conducting a meal
service?

Answer

It would be great if I can get another colleague to assist.

Otherwise I'll discretely inform the passenger that I need to
bring the meal cart back into the galley area and return with a
disposal bag to collect the diaper from her. Then I'll have to
wash my hands thoroughly before returning to my duties.

Scenarios – crew handling

As important as it is for cabin crew to be able to interact well

with the passengers, it is just as important for them to get
along with their colleagues. Your responses here can reflect how
well you are able to work with others whilst at the same time
uphold the company’s image.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 61
149. What would you do if you saw one of your colleagues
being deliberately rude to a passenger?

Answer

Firstly I would check with the colleague to make sure I'd heard
and understood everything correctly. It would be terrible to
falsely accuse someone. It is possible that I might have
misunderstood the situation. If the colleague seems to be
genuinely at fault I would report it to a senior Flight
Attendant. The reputation of the company and the enjoyment of
the passengers are very important concerns. If I was the direct
superior of the colleague, I would ask him/her about the
circumstances of the incident and take appropriate action. The
crew would be given a verbal warning but the incident would be
recorded in the crew briefing note. I would also approach the
concerned passenger to find out if he was at all affected by his
encounter with the crew and try to fix the situation.

150. Would you report on a senior crew member if you

saw him stealing money from another crew member?

Answer

Yes but I'll first confront him and tell him to confess to the
crew he stole from and let the victim decide if he/she wants to
pursue the matter. It is a difficult decision but it needs to be
done to prevent future crimes being committed. Besides, the
victim shouldn't have to suffer and theft is indeed a criminal
act.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 62
151. What would you do if the Captain asks you to bring a
passenger into the cockpit?

Answer

The CAAS rules became very strict about passengers visiting the
cockpit since the September 11 attacks. I believe the pilots,
Captains included, have been briefed about not allowing cockpit
visits by passengers and they wouldn't jeopardize their careers
for that. Anyway, I would inform my Crew-In-Charge and he will
ultimately take up the matter with the Captain.

Scenarios – safety knowledge

Of course you won’t be expected to have extensive knowledge on

the safety procedures at this point but a general awareness is
what the interviewers are looking for.

152. Would you seat an incapacitated person in an exit

row if the passenger wanted to move to that seat?

Answer

The airline would have policies disallowing certain categories

of passengers to not be seated at emergency exits. This
passenger would most definitely fall into one of these
categories. I'll need to explain the reasons behind the policy
and not just turn him down flat.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 63
153. Would you seat a child in an exit row?

Answer

Children are not allowed to be seated at emergency exit rows.

Passengers seated there may be required to assist during
emergency evacuations and a child a clearly incapable of such a
responsibility.

154. What would you do if the seat belt signs were on and
the aircraft is about to take off, but a passenger insists
that he urgently needed the toilet?

Answer

My response would be: “Sir/Ma'am, I have to stress that it is

for your own safety that you are not supposed to use the toilet
during take-off as we don't have seatbelts in there. It would be
in your best interest to wait a few more moments.”

155. How would you act in an emergency?

Answer

I'll remind myself to be calm as that would allay the

passenegrs' anxieties. Only when I'm calm that I can think
rationally, recall and apply the emergency procedures that I've
learned during safety training.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 64
Scenarios – airline policies

Once again, you will not be required to have good knowledge of the
policies of a company you’re not yet a part of. You are just expected
to try and attempt the answers. Your effort will be highly regarded.

156. Would you ever upgrade a person to first class? If so,

for what reasons?

Answer

I believe different airlines have different policies. I have

heard that some airlines impose strict guidelines for upgrades
during flight. All upgrades would have to be done by the check-
in staff. Upgrades may only be allowed by the crew-in-charge in
special circumstances when medical personnel has assisted in a
medical emergency on board, or when a seat is defective (ie.
cannot be placed upright for take-off/landing which is a safety
requirement) and there is no other available seat in the same
class. I suppose I would be clearer on the policies after I
undergo training.

157. When or under what circumstances would you

upgrade a person to first class?

Answer
See question 156.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 65
158. How do you feel about company rules and policies ?

Answer

It is necessary for any organization to implement rules and

policies in order for its operations to run smoothly. They also
provide a direction for its employees and avoid
misunderstandings which can easily occur when things are vague.

View on job & interview

A good way to assess an interviewee is to see what his/her

perception on the Cabin Crew job is. Questions will be targetted
at getting your opinion and views. There is no perfect answer
here so just support your answers with strong points and
reasons.

159. What is your ideal job?

Answer

It's one that allows me to broaden my perspective, learn about

different cultures and exercise initiative and discretion. So I
guess that would be the cabin crew job!

www.newflightcrew.com Page 66
160. How determined are you to become a cabin crew?

Answer

As determined as a female leopard hunting her prey. She's

patient in her hunt but pounces on every opportunity.

161. What were your thoughts when coming for this

interview?

Answer

I won't deny that it's a mixture of nervousness, excitement and

happiness. Nervous because I need to impress you or convince you
I'm the right person for the job while excited and happy at the
thought of a possible whole new adventure and prospect ahead of
me.

162. How well prepared are you for this interview?

Answer

I believe I am as prepared as can be but I'm also prepared to be

surprised and caught off guard by the unexpected. When that
happens, I'll just have to rely on my instincts and respond
appropriately.

163. Do you think you will be chosen as flight attendant?

Answer

I live by the phrase, “Hope for the best, expect the worst” and
that's kept me level-headed. I'm sure everyone who comes for the
interview believes he/ she has a shot at it or why bother? But
anything can happen. Sometimes it's also not possible to judge a
person during the first contact and that's why you conduct a few
rounds in this selection process. I just hope to make it through
this round and take it one step at a time.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 67
164. How would you respond if you were offered the job?

Answer

Of course with a broad Colgate smile! I may pinch myself to see

if I’m dreaming or not. There will be a few emotions engulfing
me like joy, gratitude and exhilaration. If you told me
personally I may go and give you a big hug!

165. When are you available to start work if offered the

position?

Answer

Yesterday! (If you're really unable to because of current work

commitments, then explain you need to give notice and that your
current employer doesn't deserve to be left in a lurch.)

166. How would you respond if we told you that you have
been unsuccessful on this occasion?

Answer

Needless to say I would be very disappointed. Although I

respectfully accept your decision, I'd request that you disclose
the areas that went wrong and seek your advice how and where I
can improve for future interviews.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 68
167. If you don’t get the job, what else would you do?

Answer

If I don't get the job this time around, I'll continue working
in my current company and try again and again until I'm
successful. In the meantime, I'll look for resources which may
help me improve myself to better qualify in future applications/
interviews.

168. How do you think your qualifications and experience

will match our requirement?

Answer

If you're a graduate, you can say that pursuing your education

is a sign of dedication and determination that proves you are a
committed person. If you have experience in the service
industry, explain the relation between your past experiences and
the duties of cabin crew. If your past work experience isn't
service related, then you can mention how you have siblings/
relatives that you take care of which may have helped you become
a nurturing person.

169. Do you prefer working alone or with others?

Answer

I am a 'people person' so I enjoy interaction and that's why I

want to be a flight attendant. I don't think humans are meant to
live or work like hermits; that's not our natural habitat.
Working with others has many advantages as you can help each
other out, cheer each other on and give each other a pat on the
shoulder for a job well done. These are gestures which people
need and crave for.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 69
170. Give an example of when you worked well as a team
and make it as detailed as possible.

Answer

If you don't have any work experience that you can relate, just
describe a team playing game/ sports in school or any
organization. Teamwork is present not only at a workplace but
also in various sports, games and social events.

171. Tell us about a time when you played an important

role as part of a team?

Answer

See question 170.

172. How do/would you optimize the performance and

lift the standards of a team?

Answer

If I'm the leader I need to remind all involved that each one
plays a vital role and ensure that I'm approachable enough for
anyone to open up to me. I need to lead by example and encourage
two-way communications with constructive feedback and not just
following orders blindly. Once people are acknowledged and
commended for their effort and performance when it’s due,
they'll feel appreciated and will naturally work hard for that.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 70
173. Why do you think teamwork is important?

Answer

Some jobs are too big for one person to handle. That's why teams
are formed and everyone in it has a different role to play with
all these roles contributing to the team's success. The human
body, for instance, is a great example of teamwork. Each organ
has a special role and all have to work properly in order for
the body to function well as a whole. If one fails, the body
evidently breaks down.

174. Why should we hire you over the others waiting to

be interviewed?

Answer

I wouldn't dare tell you what to do and surely don't know what
qualities the others have but I do know my own. And since I'm
fortunate enough to be interviewed before them, I get to present
myself first and hopefully convince you that I'm the right
person for the job.

175. Why do you think you were unsuccessful in your

previous application?
Answer

I really have no clue. I hope it was just bad luck because I

believe if given a chance, I'd make an excellent cabin crew. I'm
a hard worker and use a lot of initiative. Whatever it was, I'm
not going to let it dampen my hopes. If anything, it's made me
more determined to keep trying till I succeed.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 71
176. The role of a cabin crew member requires the person
to be away from home for long periods of time, how will
this affect you and how are you able to handle this?

Answer

It is never easy being away from family and loved ones but
fortunately the internet is so readily available, accessible and
affordable these days and keeping in touch with them has never
been easier. At least during days off, I can commit 100% of my
time to them. Some people who have ground jobs may work long
hours that prevent them from spending time with their family
anyway. I suppose the key would be to plan my time accordingly.

177. How would you anticipate your passenger’s needs?

Answer

Observation and awareness would do the trick. People do speak in

body languages and actions which can be read, interpreted and
anticipated when properly observed. Also, I'll be using common
sense and the nice, warm human touch to approach these
situations.

178. What do you think is the main cause of some

passengers' frustrations?

Answer

The reason people get on a flight to to go somewhere and it.

Whether it's for business or pleasure they want to be at their
destination on a pre-determined time/day. When that's disruppted
it may alter their plans and prior arrangements. This is usually
the initial problem. When the check-in staff and cabin crew
don't appear helpful would be the brunt of their anger. In my
opinion, negative or nonchalant attitude of the airline staff
would be the main cause.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 72
179. What types of passengers would you like to serve?

Answer

We can't choose our passengers but ideally, I would really enjoy

serving someone who can appreciate my hard work and is able to
recognize my dedication to my job.

180. Do you think a customer is always right?

Answer

A customer's rights and a customer being right are two different

things. It is a customer's right to receive good service but
sometimes they can behave badly (such as when intoxicated with
alcohol or become verbally abusive) and put other people's
safety at risk, then their behaviour is questionable. A customer
should also treat the service provider as a human being and give
him/her some respect as well.

181. Why do you think you are suitable for our airlines?

Answer

Mention your experience and hard working nature. If you speak

more than one language, explain how that can be an asset.

182. Have you stretched the truth today to gain a

favourable outcome today?

Answer

I have tried to be as honest as possible but won't deny that I

may have unintentionally stretched some truths but assure you
that the information I've provided today is not fabricated.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 73
183. Which of your attributes do you think is essential to
a cabin crew's job?

Answer

They would have to be positive attributes like outgoing and

friendly personality, adaptability and ability to handle
irregular and long hours, intuition and love for finesse. Pick
one or two positive points and expand on them.

184. Do you think being a cabin crew is a glamorous job?

Answer

Glamour is subjective like beauty. There's outward beauty and

there's inner beauty. I don't see why the cabin crew job has to
be labelled in any way. I just see it as a great job for me.

185. How would you describe the cabin crew job?

Answer

Most passengers don't know that the primary duty of cabin crew
is to ensure their safety and comfort. In addition, the cabin
crew's responsibilities also include providing good in-flight
service and attending to the passengers' needs during the
flight.

186. What in your opinion are the duties of a cabin crew

member?

Answer

See question 185.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 74
187. Why do you think good grooming is important for
cabin crew?

Answer

Grooming is important for any person who in the service

industry. Nobody likes to be served by a waiter or salesperson
who looks shabby or has bad decorum or worse, bad hygiene. Since
airlines are service related, the cabin crew's grooming is
essential.

188. Why should cabin crew smile a lot?

Answer

A smile doesn't mean a whole set of teeth has to be shown all

the time. A basic pleasant facial expression that shows you're
happy will suffice. Once again, nobody likes to be greeted or
served by a sulky face. A smiling face makes interaction much
more pleasant.

189. Name 3 things you think a passenger expects from a

cabin crew.

Answer

Passengers expect cabin crew to display a nice personality, be

helpful and have good job knowledge.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 75
190. What are the characteristics you think a cabin crew
should possess?

Answer

You can mention any of the following: pleasant personality,

friendly, helpful, intuitive, hardworking, caring,
compassionate, understanding.

191. What are the disadvantages of being a flight

attendant?

Answer

I can't see any disadvantages except some would say irregular

work hours but those who do are probably not suited for the job.

192. How would you define good and bad customer

service in the airline sector? Can you give examples of
both?

Answer

Good service, apart from providing a warm and friendly

environment for the passengers, would include showing that you
care about their needs during the flight like offering them
appropriate amenities when necessary, remembering their
requests, engaging in nice conversation with them from time to
time and when given the opportunity, surprise them with
thoughtful gestures like a self-made birthday card, special
drink concoction, etc. The worse customer service you can ever
give is being rude. I don't think anything tops that.
Forgetfulness and mistakes can be overlooked but rudeness is
hard to tolerate.

www.newflightcrew.com Page 76
193. What question could I ask you that would really
intimidate you?

Answer

To be honest, I have no idea. I guess I'll only know when I come

across the question. (This can be made to sound like a joke)

Vision & Goals

Here the interviewers try to gauge whether or not you're the

ambitious and loyal material they are looking for; someone who will
be committed to the job in the long term.

194. Do you consider this as a career?

Answer

Remember that you are selling yourself and need to portray

yourself as a responsible and reliable employee. Answer: “I
believe a person can have a very promising career in the
airline. ________ Airlines also has a great reputation and is
expanding quickly. I hope to be a part of its growth and am
certain I can contribute positively to it.”

www.newflightcrew.com Page 77
195. What is your career objective?

Answer

Work hard, learn the ropes to become a competent employee and

climb as high up the ladder as possible in a reasonable time
frame that would be in tandem with my personal growth. Once I'm
up there, I'd like to be able to share my achievements and
impart my knowledge and help others achieve their goals.

196. Have you applied for any other positions?

Answer

If you have, explain why. Otherwise: No, I really want to be a

part of Cabin Crew and feel that my personality suits the
position. I wish to experience first hand the life of Cabin Crew
so that I may be able to apply it in future when I transfer to
the Service & Development department.

197. Where do you see yourself in five years' time?

Answer

It would be a beautiful picture if it has me in a senior crew

uniform. So hopefully, I can be a self confident flight
attendant with an excellent knowledge of my work and has
recently got a promotion!

www.newflightcrew.com Page 78
198. What do you want to be doing in 2/5/10 years time?
Or: Where do you want to be in 2/5/10 years time?

Answer

In 2 years, a competent crew in ________ Airlines. In 5 years,

get my first promotion. In 10 years, maybe 2nd or 3rd promotion
and lead a team of flight attendants.

199. What kind of goals have you set for your career?

Answer

I plan to rise up the ranks of cabin crew and lead a team of

dedicated subordinates who see me as their role model and at the
same time save up money to buy a nice home in the shortest time
possible. I'd also like to contribute to the airline by being
exemplary and assist with training or internal product/ service
improvement courses. After a suitable length of time, I hope to
apply for a transfer to a department that helps improve and
contribute to the inflight service and development or perhaps
even Cabin Crew training.

200. If you were to leave the Cabin Crew position where

would you turn your skills?

Answer

I hope to apply my skills in a department that focuses on

inflight service and development. Another option is to be
involved in Cabin Crew training.
