Abstract

Housing is a basic need of human being. But this is out of the means of low-income
householder who constitute majority of the population in the country. Reusing and
recycling of materials is considered as an important value in architecture that
prolonged among many historical ages, from reuse of stone, wood, etc.… This type
of Architecture create some architectural spaces that hosts different functions &
human activities, not only on the scale of an individual building but also on a larger
scale that can help in creating a quick or sometimes temporary solution for a building
or a group of buildings that are structurally stable & safe, environment friendly, with
very high capabilities of achieving aesthetic values that can be utilized by people.

Introduction
Affordable housing as the name itself suggests the housing units that are affordable by
weaker section of the society whose income is below the certain median household income
categories defined by the government of India. Affordable housing is to address the housing
need of the lower income group (LIG) and economic weaker section (EWS

 Since 2015 urban population was growing an average of 2.1% every year. If it
continues like this according to 2022 it leads to nearly 30 million unit’s shortage in
urban areas.
 Although housing has been recognized as a HUMAN RIGHT under a number of
international conventions, access to housing for low-income people is often
problematic.
MODULAR HOUSING

1.TUBE HOUSING

2.CONTAINER HOUSING

TUBE HOUSING:

India IS notorious for its tiny densely packed dwellings and housing shortage. architect
James Law has designed an unusual solution to create temporary apartments in the narrow
spaces between buildings: Converted old water pipes.

 Tube housing are meant to take advantage of awkward urban space and can be
stacked in alleyways and atop buildings. Because they’re so heavy—each
apartment weighs almost 22 tons—they don’t require brackets or bolts to secure the
pods together, keeping installation costs low, according to Law.

 Sometimes there’s some land left over between buildings which are rather narrow
so it’s not easy to build a new building, Law explained. We could put tube housing
there and land will be utilized

What is a concrete water tube?

They are used for water pipes and in man hole systems. The technology used for the
manufacture of concrete pipes is vertical dry cast method using vibrators to compact the
concrete. The ends of pipes are suitable for socket and spigot.

The technology used for the manufacture of concrete pipes is vertical Dry-Cast
method using vibrators to compact the concrete. The water cement ratio of concrete
in pipes made using these processes is low and with high levels of compaction, the
result is pipes having higher concrete compressive strength as compared to spun
pipes. The concrete thus produced is practically impermeable to water and has the
highest level of durability.

Size:

concrete pipes of Class NP3 and NP4 in sizes varying from 300 mm to 2600 mm Diameter

•ClassNP3:150mmto2400mm
•ClassNP4:150mmto1800mm
• Class P1: 250mm to 1200mm

EXPECTED LIFETIME OF RCC PIPE:

the question arises as to how long concrete pipe will last. It is a generally accepted fact that
concrete pipe will last at least 100 years and probably several centuries.

CONTAINER HOUSING:

Shipping container architecture could be defined as that type of architecture that is generally
characterized by the re-use of steel shipping containers as a structural element and
Architectural envelope that can host a specific function or a human activity
It was noticed recently that many people were building their houses using shipping
containers for their low environ-mental impact in comparison to traditional houses made with
brick and reinforced concrete structure, taking also in consideration the short time required
to erect a building in this way, with future possibilities of moving these buildings to other
locations or adding extra spaces or volumes.

WHAT IS A SHIPPING CONTAINER?

A shipping container is a steel frame-usually cuboid- with a suitable strength to support

large cargo transits and stowage.

 There are various types of containers, varying from refillable to universally

standardized.
 For global trade, the term container is directly associated to a shopping container
which can be loaded onto a great number of transportation options without requiring
unpacking of its content

EXPECTED LIFETIME OF A SHIPPING CONTAINER

 Based on the use intended for them, most containers are made to fulfil at least a
one-decade lifespan, with three decades being the chief lifespan target.
 They are made to be extremely resilient and secure to facilitate safe cargo transit
through a long distance
 Most containers in use these days are expected to have finished a one-decade
lifespan.
 Through application of reasonable maintenance, a lifespan far exceeding the
anticipated figures can be expected.

One of the main questions raised in Containers architecture is why a steel shipping
container can be reused to create a livable space. Knowing that geometrically any space
could be defined by different planes, horizontal and vertical, with a spatial relationship that
organizes this space, defines it, and represents the human function that this space was
created to be performed in, with the scale and dimensions, another value is added, thus
leading to a better performance in this function, or another function that could be added or
performed.so looking at any steel shipping container, the main and basic conditions of a
space exists, with some modifications it can host various human activities of functions, thus
creating not only functioning spaces but also interesting spaces for people to live, use and
enjoy.

Aim

“Balance our economic, environmental and social needs, allowing prosperity for now and
future generations”

The aim of this is to look at an integrated approach of urban shelter settlements in India, in
various socio-economic groups in relation to how they respond to local needs. this can be
applicable to developing countries facing similar short-term and long-term development
problems.

Objectives

 User behavior and requirements.

 Utility and space enhancement.
 Form and function.
 Site planning and landscape detailing.
 Site circulation: vehicular, pedestrian.
 Design detailing considering the barrier free environment.
 Details such as building services, building mechanism.
 User’s safety measures

Methodology

 Understanding the project

 Literature study
 Desktop study
 Case study
 Site analysis

Need of the project

 Since 2015 urban population was growing an average of 2.1% every year. If it
continues like this according to 2022 it leads to nearly 30 million unit’s shortage in
urban areas.
 Rapid urbanization and urban population growth, mainly because of rural to urban
migration also has major impacts on the shelter quality and shelter provision. Mainly
affecting the low-income group and the economically weaker sections.
 Although housing has been recognized as a HUMAN RIGHT under a number of
international conventions, access to housing for low-income people is often prob.

Design program

Design program is decided and finalized after analyzing and discussion with respective
faculty.

Scope:
There are so many people who even doesn't eat food thrice a day and those people also
won't own a house.

There is a large demand of houses and it requires large amounts of resources and finding,
by producing and developing of these types of housing can greatly reduce the resources
and these can be affordable and reusable

LIMITATIONS:

These types of housing can be designed and planned in 5 acres to 30-40 acres depend on
requirements in city/location.
In this project I am limited to plan and design houses for up to 3 acres -5 acres it can be
replicated all over the site i.e., 50 acres or and so

Conclusion:

Although having a very systematic and regular shape, shipping containers & concrete
tubes could be reused to create not only functional spaces, but also various configurations
of architectural programs or functions, that vary from a very simple residential unit, to a small
office building … etc.

Possibilities are extended also to compose livable urban spaces, that can be easily
constructed and relevantly in a low budget within a short time
