1. A press working operation blanks out discs of 35mm diameter and 1.6mm thick. If the ultimate strength
of the materials is 200 N/mm2 and the press ram can exert a maximum force of 150 KN, can we blank
out five discs simultaneously.
2. A tie bar has to carry a load of 120KN. What must be the width of the bar 13 mm thick if there is hole of
20mm diameter on its centre line? The working stress for the tie bar is 75 MPa.
3. A cylindrical bar 60mm diameter and 200mm long is fixed at one end. At the free end it is loaded as
shown in Fig.1 with an axial load of 12 KN, a downward transverse load of 5KN and a torque of 1.4
KN-m. Calculate the maximum stress at point P of the bar.

4. A steel member is subjected to a 3 dimensional stress system and the resulting principal stresses are 120
N/mm2 tension, 80 N/mm2 and 40 N/mm2. If the proportional limit of the material in simple tension is
280 N/mm2 and its poisons ratio is 0.3. Determine the factor of safety according to
a) Maximum Principal stress theory; b) Maximum shear stress theory.
5. A bolt is subjected to a tensile load of 25 KN and a shear load of 10KN. Determine the diameter of the
bolt according to
a) Maximum Principal stress theory; b) Maximum shear stress theory.
6. A rectangular plate 60mm x 10mm with a hole 12mm diameter is as shown in Fig.2 and subjected to a
tensile load of 12KN. Find the maximum stress induced.

7. Taking stress concentration into account find the maximum stress induced when a tensile load of 20KN
is applied to
i)
A rectangular plate of 12 mm thick is shown in Fig.3a.
ii)
A stepped shaft as shown in Fig.3b.
8. A circular bar is simply supported with a span of 0.5m and is subjected to a concentrated cyclic load at
its mid span. The load varies from a minimum value of 20KN to maximum value of 45KN. The load
direction is transverse to the shaft axis. Decide upon the diameter of the bar taking a factor of safety of
1.5 and factors of 0.85 and 0.89 respectively for size effect and surface finish.
i)
Ultimate strength = 650 N/mm2
ii)
Yield Strength = 450 N/mm2
iii)
Endurance strength = 350 N/mm2
9. The shaft of a hand operated wire rope hoist is supported on the bearings A and B as shown in Fig.4. The
shaft is keyed to the drum of diameter 200mm and the wire rope is turned around it. A tangential load of 4500
N is applied at the end of the rope. The yield stress for the shaft material is 310 MN/m2.
i) Calculate the maximum and minimum principal stresses in the shaft.
ii) Calculate the required shaft diameter based upon the Tresca theory of failure using a factor of safety
of 3.
iii) Determine the factor of safety for the shaft diameter as obtained in (ii) above based upon the VonMises theory of failure, commenting on the value obtained.
10. A bracket made of steel (yield strength is 200 N/mm2) and subjected to a force of 5KN acting at an angle
of 30 to the vertical. The factor of safety is 4. Refer Fig.5. Determine the dimension of the cross section.
