Topic: Birth Control and other forms of Contraceptives
Grade Level: High School (9-12)
Standards:
1.) 1.4.G- Identify why abstinence is the most effective method for the prevention of HIV,
other STDs, and pregnancy.
2.) 1.12.G- Evaluate the safety and effectiveness (including success and failure rates) of
FDA-approved condoms and other contraceptives in preventing HIV, other STDs, and
pregnancy.
3.) 3.3.G- Compare the success and failure rates of FDA-approved condoms and other
contraceptives in preventing HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy.
Objectives: SWBAT…
1.) Identify 4 different forms of contraceptives
2.) Demonstrate how to correctly use 2 different forms of contraceptives
3.) Choose and justify one form of birth control or contraceptive that is right for them
Anticipatory set: Show the students the youtube video, 10 Types of Birth Control.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6vU8_YGaZ4 (2 minutes).
Input and modeling:
Direct instruction and checking for understanding: Give the students a mini quiz based
on the video: ask them to identify 4 forms of contraception that were mentioned on a separate
sheet of paper and collect it. (5 min.)
Input: Present PowerPoint on Contraception
-Explains the different forms, description, effectiveness, side effects, and benefits.
(40 minutes).
Modeling: After the powerpoint presentation, show models of birth control pills, IUD’s,
the implant, the vaginal ring, male and female condoms, sponges/diaphragms, and spermicide.
Also demonstrate how to correctly apply a condom. (10 minutes).
Checking for Understanding: Have students discuss in small groups the difference between
each forms of contraception, and have a student from each group share the one that the group
thought was most effective. (5 minutes).
Guided Practice: Then have the groups of students go to different stations where they can
interact with the models of the birth control themselves. (20 minutes for whole activity).
1.) Condom station: Students will practice applying condoms correctly on bananas. They
will also be asked to identify female condoms along with male condoms.
2.) IUD station: Have students interact with the IUD and vagina model that simulates how an
IUD is inserted, and how it works.
3.) Implant/vaginal ring station: Students will identify what each form of contraception is
and determine where they are inserted in the female body. They will mainly be observing
the actual implant and ring.
4.) Birth control pill station: Students will be provided with a bag of M&M’s and
instructions on how to take their “birth control”. This station will be continued
throughout the day, as students will be asked to consume one M&M every hour to
simulate how birth control should be taken once everyday.
Closure: Show students https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control and recap the
different forms that were taught in class, and emphasize that this site would be a good resource if
they wanted to read more about all of the different forms of contraception later on. (5 minutes).
Independent Practice: For homework, have the students post on an online discussion board
which form of contraception would work best for them, explaining why, and have them respond
to two other students to ensure that they see how different forms may be better for people in
different situations. One paragraph due by the next week.
Materials: Models of IUDs, implant, vaginal ring, male condom, female condom, birth control
pills, sponges, diaphragm, spermicide, bananas, and M&Ms.
