ME-351 Manufacturing Technology I

Question #1
Solution:

a)Draft d=25-20=5mm,

Contact length, L = (500 x 5)0.5 =50mm

True strain ε = ln (25/20) = ln 1.25 = 0.223

Yf = 240(0.223) 0.20/1.20= 148.1MPa 5

Rolling force F = 148.1(250)(50)

F =1,851,829N

(b) Torque

T = 0.5 (1,851,829)m( 50 x 10-3) 5

T = 46,296 N-m

(c)

N = (30 m/min)/(2

Π x 0.500) = 9.55 rev/min = 0.159 rev/s

Power 5
P= 2π (0.159)(1,851,829)(50 x 10-3)

P = 92,591 N-m/s

P=92,591 W

Question # 2
a)

Ductility: The amount of strain a material can endure before failure. (2)

Toughness: The area under the stress strain diagram or toughness is the ability of a material to absorb
energy and plastically deform without fracturing. (2)

Yield point: the point in the stress strain curve at which the permanent deformation occurs or just begin.
(2)
b)

Bulk deformation: (3)

Stock has high V/A

Sheet metal Working : (3)

Stock has low V/A

c)

Strain Rate: (3)

Strain rate is the change in strain (deformation) of a material with respect to time.

Strain rate in forming is directly related to speed of deformation v

Deformation speed v = velocity of the ram or other movement of the equipment.

.  v / h
Strain rate sensitivity: (3)

Flow stress is a function of temperature. At hot working temperatures, flow stress also depends on strain
rate. As strain rate increases, resistance to deformation increases This effect is known as strain-rate
sensitivity
