POKHARA UNIVERSITY
Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2010
Programme: BE Full Marks : 100 Pass Mark : 45 Course: Water Resource Engineering II Time : 3 hrs Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable. The figures in the margin indicate full marks. Attempt all the questions.
1. a. Derive the equation for power that can be generated when a 5
discharge Q cumecs falls through height H meters. b. For a concrete gravity dam as shown in figure below, 10 calculate the followings: i. The total vertical forces acting on the dam. ii. The total horizontal forces acting on the dam. iii. Factor of safety against sliding. Take = 0.70 and concrete = 23.5 KN/m3, water = 9.81 KN/m3
2. a. What is a trash rack? Discuss about the need of the trash 7
rack and the losses occur in the trash rack. b. What is Reservoir sedimentation? What are different 8 methods to control sedimentation? Explain with figures different storage zones of reservoir. 3. a. What are the advantages of tunnel in hydropower? What 7 1 are different loads that exist in a tunnel? Write different methods of rock support. b. A forebay is to be designed for a discharge of 2.14 cumecs 8 for generation volume of 2 minutes and penstock length of 13.4m. Assume diameter of penstock as 1.2m. 4. a. Compute the dimension of stilling basin for a weir with 8 crest height fixed at 1.5m above upstream bed level and 4.5 above the down stream bed level. The width of rectangular channel for upstream and downstream is 12m. Coefficient of discharge for weir is 2.1 and head over crest is 0.6m. The roughness coefficient n = 0.14. Take tail water depth = 0.95Y2. Assume weir length equal to channel width. b. What is spillway? What are the requirements of spillway? Explain the working principle of siphon spillway? 7
5. a. What is draft tube? Show that the absolute pressure below 8
the runner of a reactive turbine is lesser than a atmospheric pressure. b. A turbine is to operate under a head of 25m at 200 r.p.m. 7 The discharge is 9 cumec. If the efficiency is 90%, determine the power generated and specific speed of turbine. 6. a. Define firm power and secondary power. How can you 8 increase the firm power? b. Describe the importance of micro hydro in the context of 7 our country. 7. Write the short notes on (Any Two): 2×5 a. Failure modes of embankment dam. b. Intake c. Foundation treatment
