Patient Education in an Australian Context

Diet Guidelines for Good Health

• Now let's talk about your diet. I recommend eating a wide range of foods including

plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

• You can control your weight by cutting back on foods such as sugar, fats and alcohol.

• It is a good idea to use monounsaturated oils for cooking such as olive oil.

• It is important to eat less sugar and increase your intake of complex carbohydrates.

• Fibre is very important in your diet. Choose wholegrain foods such as cereals, bread

and rice.

• You can protect against high blood pressure by using less salt.

• Avoid foods that have a high salt content such as chips & take-away food.

• Try to drink more water. The recommended daily intake is about 2 litres of water a

day.

Weight Loss & Benefits of Exercise

• I’m glad you asked about how to lose weight. It will have a very positive impact on your

health and self esteem.

• Well, there are basically two simple keys to losing weight.

Firstly be careful what you eat and avoid fattening foods.

Secondly, exercise regularly to raise your metabolism and burn extra calories. Do you think you

can do that?

Role-play Card
Setting: Hospital Ward

Health Professional

Patient is a 42-year-old male who arrived at the hospital via ambulance 10 days ago after suffering
from acute sub-sternal chest pain radiating to left arm. Patient has been diagnosed with myocardial
infarction. Patient is a businessman, married with 3 children. His condition has now stabilised however
he appears restless and worried about his condition. He is overweight and is a smoker. He has high
blood pressure.

Task

• Ask about current condition


• Provide comfort and stress the importance of a gradual transition back to normal life
• Reassure the patient that he can expect a full recovery if he follows doctor’s advice
• Discuss importance of taking medications regularly
• Discuss the importance of giving up smoking
• Provide advice on what assistance is available to assist in quitting smoking
